About this audiobook

Andy Carpenter isn’t sure what to think when he gets a mysterious phone call from a good friend, policeman Pete Stanton, asking him to drop everything, drive to an unfamiliar address, and bring his girlfriend, Laurie Collins. He certainly isn’t expecting to show up at a crime scene. But that’s exactly where he arrives—at the house where Pete has just discovered the body of ex-convict Danny Balfour. Upstairs are Danny’s now orphaned four-year-old son and basset hound. And that, Andy discovers, is why he and Laurie were called to the scene—Pete wants them to take care of the boy and the dog so they won’t get thrown into the “system.” This is already asking a lot, but soon Pete needs another big favor from Andy. Pete himself has come under suspicion for Danny’s murder, and he needs defense attorney Andy to represent him…and to find out what really happened in Danny's house that day.

DNF 9/16. Found as a 2015 Shamus Award Finalist. Carpenter, a lawyer, assists in a murder investigation. A Series which includes dogs and dog-related titles. Don't mind the occasional dog but not a fan of lawyer novels. Dull story and writing. Won't be following.

Just plain fun to see what Andy Carpenter is involved in. These books are so readable because Carpenter is such a well described and lovable character, along with his constant companions...Laurie....and Marcus....and Sam, PLUS the dogs...and now, Ricky.

The cover is misleading. There are only about 4 sentences in the whole book that refer to the dogs (two of them) and all of them state that the dogs are sleeping and/or relaxing. I thought that dogs would play a major role in this mystery, I was disappointed. The mystery was ok but nothing memorable. I will probably not pick up another of this series, there are just too many other great novels to choose from. Life is too short to be spent on mediocre stories.

HOUNDED by David Rosenfelt is an engrossing first-person story layered with the protagonist’s smart-arsed remarks. From the start you root for Andy Carpenter, lawyer. Soon you’ll be rooting for Andy’s client too. They’re ably assisted by an impressive supporting cast.Of particular joy is the way Andy’s actions seem almost predictable, as though you were there—thinking his thoughts with him—but then he confounds you and skips a few steps ahead. You’re left watching a clever man tumble through scary, touching and impossible scenes. Though HOUNDED is the twelfth outing with Andy Carpenter, I thought this was my first, and the story holds up pretty well for a new reader. With such a backlog, what a treat I have coming!A very satisfying story.

lawyers, law-enforcement, family-dynamics, framed, fraud, friendship, FBI, conspiracy, greed, murder, murder-investigation, dogs, situational-humor, snark-fest, senior-citizens, verbal-humor, computer-nerd, ex-cop, fast-pace, private-investigators*****I'm finally catching up on the books in the series that I missed because I really like them. Andy Carpenter is a wise-mouthed lawyer who can afford to take semi retirement by only representing innocent clients while supporting an animal shelter. Add in that his wife is no longer law enforcement but works as his private investigator and more and you have the baseline for these convoluted mysteries. There are many other people who help Andy find out what the truth really is and make it courtroom admissible. All of the characters really are, and obviously I find the series addictive but they could stand alone. Of course there's dogs and murder and a complex investigation before and during the trial. Lots of twists and turns in the plot, but there's no need for spoilers or an attempt at a summary. I found it to be a real brain grabber in a series of interesting and well written mysteries. At no time does the reader feel lost or as if missing background info.Grover Gardner narrates this complicated snarkfest very well!

Audiobook. Perfectly read by Grover Gardner. I read several of the early Andy Carpenter series several years ago, liked them, and then promptly forgot about them. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that there have been several new ones published and available on Audible. I bought a bunch.Andy is asked by his friend in the police department, Capt. Pete Stanton, to foster a bassett hound and a little boy, Ricky Diaz, the son of an informant, who has been killed. Then Pete is charged with the informant’s murder and the evidence against him is overwhelming. Andy, being independently wealthy, takes on the defense of his friend along with his usual sidekicks, Lori, his P.I. girlfriend; Sam, the computer genius and hacker; Hike, the perpetual pessimist; and Marcus, the gentle hulk. It’s no spoiler to reveal that the case against Pete is so airtight the only way Andy can get Pete off is to find the motive behind what is clearly a frame-up. Nor is it revealing anything that Lori, and soon Andy, are quite taken with Ricky and the hound. Nor that the veterinary medicine research (Rosenfelt is obviously a dog-lover and he and his wife founded a dog rescue) plays a role. One reads these not for the mystery but rather the characters and Andy’s self-deprecating sense of humor and wise-cracks, not to mention courtroom shenanigans. Very enjoyable listening.

I have enjoyed Rosenfelts’s dog-centric mysteries/thrillers in the past. “Hounded” just didn’t do it for me. Evidence of my ho-hum reaction is that I spent three weeks reading it in dribs and drabs.“Hounded” might have been too formulaic. Yes, Any Carpenter had his usual legal team with all their idiosyncrasies. It would have been disappointing if he had not. Yet, these characters were flat, two dimensional, with little development or roles in the plot. Even the dogs didn’t get much prime time in this story, and we all love the dogs.I had always enjoyed Andy’s flip humor in previous novels, but didn’t find any laugh-out-loud moments in “Hounded.” The humor, instead of being funny, seemed expected and routine. The plot in which Andy’s friend and police officer Pete Stanton was framed and arrested for murder was quite complicated, with a whole assortment of bad guys and many levels, with a nice surprise ending. Maybe my lack of enjoyment of “Hounded” was that it was too similar to Rosenfelt’s previous novels. It's not a bad book; it just feels slightly stale.

A delightful mix of mystery and humor in a tale that is also intriguing and entertaining. Attorney Andy Carpenter finds himself to be a temporary guardian, along with his girlfriend Laurie, to a young boy and his basset hound. But the crux of the matter is that his friend, Pete Stanton has been accused of murder. In defending his friend, Andy puts himself in danger, following a trail of bodies that hopefully will lead to the real killer. When all is said and done, Andy discovers a truth about himself that will change his life. A great story from beginning to end.
