I adore this series! It doesn't cater to any of my favored tropes but I still love the characters. I am SUPER excited for the next installment.

I have to take a break from reading these. I prefer if there's story with romance rather than story in service of romance. I just felt somewhat unsatisfied by the end of the story and wanted more. As usual, this is my opinion, your mileage may vary, everyone experiences stories differently. Will Thorne's sanity is being drained away by the artificial heart in his chest. He goes to Holly Evernight, the person who put it there, who he blames for his difficulties. Now many people want her dead and she's hiding in her house with her experiments. To me it felt like the author wrote herself into a corner and then had to use a lot of handwavium and deus (or faerie)ex macina to solve the problems. I was just left wanting more.

Well, well! It has been one of the most supense stroy that kept you on your feet gusging who have and what next is going to happen. Again there are a lot of missing parts that were not quite stranght forward abouy the two main characters. Including the person in their lifes that were very streaght with them on theings or matter that have to and what they are to avoild. This two were torited with until it was impossibel for them to take the abuse from their tortmentors. After having been pushed back to the wall without no other place to go. It became appearlent that it is time to fight back to gained their lifes back and love for one another. Great ending having to gained all that was taking from them.
I give this five start it is a great read for me and quite entertaining!

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsLately it seems that many of my favourite paranormal romance series have written all of their main characters’ tales, and have started adding secondary ones in order to be able to crank out more installments. The main problem with this is that it’s hard to introduce new couples this late in the game, and still have readers connect with them, because they weren’t part of the author’s original world. Kristen Callihan has succeeded where countless others have failed by A) having enough foresight to provide a bit of back story with a novella (ENTWINED), and B) ensuring that her protagonists were able to stand on their own while still fitting into her DARKEST LONDON universe. EVERNIGHT is a multilayered, beautifully written book, and a stunning testament to the power of love.Callihan continues to break the traditional PNR mold by ensuring that each new installment is truly unique instead of a cookie cutter replica of a similar story, but with a different main couple. These novels could easily be read as stand-alones, however I’ve given this series 5 stars across the board, so it goes without saying that you should definitely start with FIRELIGHT. The plot line of this book is seriously un-unravelable between Thorne’s insanity (what’s real vs. mad imaginings), the SOS’ machinations, and several other mysterious players who aren’t even revealed until the very end. Heck, even the romance left me skeptical as to whether a HEA was even possible for Holly and Will. There’s no shortage of paranormal elements in this tale with elementals, GIM (Ghosts in the Machine), fallen angels, Sanguis demons, fae, and shifters all playing vital roles. The DARKEST LONDON world is even further expanded upon with the addition of Here (Earth), There (Supernatural plane), and Nowhere (Hell), along with the seamless blending of the PNR, historical, and Steampunk genres for which this author is famous for. I especially enjoyed this installment because Evernight is an inventor, so on top of outstanding world-building and character development; readers also get tons and tons of gadgets like clockwork hearts and spectrometers! Callihan’s imagination is limitless, and she definitely doesn’t believe in doing anything halfway.I loved Will and Holly’s romance; they are brought together by necessity, torn apart by others’ schemes, only to be finally reunited by fate. The cost of love has never been higher with immortality, sanity, and their very lives on the line. Evernight’s clever mind, ironclad will, and raw power complimented Thorne’s brute strength, sexual magnetism, and cunningness perfectly. The dirty talk between them was deliciously scandalous, and the sex scenes ranged from crude, to tender, to light BDSM. More often than not, I found myself doubting whether either of these characters would ever be able to find happiness, but that too was part of Kristen Callihan’s exquisitely executed master plan.Steampunk, historical, paranormal romance—categorize this book however you like, but one thing remains clear, EVERNIGHT was awesome!

This felt mostly kinda average. I liked the characters okay, but was a little irritated by their antics for a large chunk of the story. It got a bit stronger toward the end I thought.

After being tortured and mutilated by a deranged supernatural, William Thorne is living a nightmare as he slowly loses his grip on reality. The only thing Will does know is his undying hatred for the woman he holds responsible for his condition - Holly Evernight. Held captive by fear, Holly has become a prisoner in her own home, but when Will arrives on her doorstep to fulfill the contract on her life, one touch is all it takes for them both to realize how much they need each other for only Holly can keep Will’s madness at bay and only he can protect her from the assassins on her trail.

Series Note:This is book #5 in the London Steampunk series. While books 1-4 can be read as standalones (although some backstory will be lost), it is recommended that this book be read after book #4 as it is a direct continuation of events in that installment.

Holly is a problematic heroine. On the one hand, her cold facade conceals an emotional vulnerability that makes her sympathetic to the reader. On the other hand, her scientific approach to life results in her coming across as distant and uncaring. Regardless, my biggest issue with her is the despicable manner in which she treats Will, especially after their first sexual encounter, although she does redeem herself in the latter part of the story.

Will is far more likable. In the previous book and the start of this one, he is the epitome of the dark and tortured anti-hero. The details on his back story are interesting and his “all in” attitude toward Holly despite their differences makes him very appealing.

While Will and Holly’s romance is pretty good with some solid chemistry and entertaining banter, the rest of the plot is exceedingly convoluted and confusing. There are a multitude of different antagonists all vying for supremacy. As soon as one is conveniently disposed of, another pops out of the woodwork - its enough to make your head spin.

Callihan also sets the stage for the next couple of installments with the hints at Adam’s story and the introduction of Holly’s cousin St. John.

All in all, despite my issues with this installment, Callihan’s writing is very engaging and with the hints at Adam’s story and the introduction of Holly’s cousin, St. John, she has set the stage for the next books and it looks really good.

    Review
I've said before that I love this series.  The characters, storyline, and setting gets better with each book.

Will Thorne and Holly Evernight have a connection.  They each refuse to admit it.  Holly is a strong female character.  (Pretty much all of Callihan's female characters are.) Her biggest issue is that she doesn't let herself feel anything. She tries to compartmentalize everything into an experiment that she has to figure out. I adore Thorne.  Even though he's going mad, he is carefree.  He wants to show Holly that life isn't just about what she can prove, but what she can feel.

More paranormal creatures are brought into the story with this book.  We also get more glimpses of Adam, creator of the GIM.  I still can't figure out what exactly he is, but I hope we find out soon.  We also get to meet Queen Mab herself.  She's not exactly all warm and cuddly.  I pretty much hate her.  As we progress in the series I can't wait to see what new species Callihan brings forth.

One of my favorite things about Callihan's books is that we get to peek into the mind of some of the other characters.  With each little snippet we become hooked, and hope that the character will have their own story to tell.

I love the relationship that Thorne and Evernight have.  They bicker, but also learn that they just might need to rely on each other.  They each discover new things about themselves along the way.

I can't wait for the next book, and hope it's not too far off.

This series just keeps getting stranger and stranger. There are a ton of supernatural creatures that live in London and some are your run of the mill types while others are a bit different, like the Ghost in the Machines. This time we have Holly, who is an elemental that can manipulate metal, and Will. Will is a demon that lives off blood, but he's been given a mechanical heart (in Shadowdance) so now he's a bit...more. At their first meeting things don't really go well, but they decide to work together. Of course while they're trying to fix their problems love finds them. It was entertaining to read and I've been following this series since the beginning so I'm sure I'll read the next book. These books really should be read in order for the most enjoyment. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Evernight is book 5 in the Darkest London series that is romance, paranormal, historical, supernatural, mystery, suspense, and steampunk. I'm not usually a big reader of paranormal, supernatural, or steampunk but I am starting to love each book in this series more than the previous; do not be scared away if you also don't usually read books with these elements. Kristen Callihan has created a world that is wildly imaginative and intricate with captivating characters. This book is dangerously close to being the best I have read so far in 2014.

If you have read the earlier books in the series you will remember Holly Evernight, Will Thorne, and the horrific circumstances that brought them together. This picks up a couple months after the previous book and Will is on the hunt for Holly to exact revenge for the part she played while he was a captive. When he meets up with her, he is unpleasantly surprised that any advantage he might have had are useless against Holly. This is due to Holly being an elemental; while also being a genius inventor Holly can control metal. Will was originally half human and demon but now having a clockwork heart made out of platinum that over time seeps throughout his body turning him all metal, he is consequently at the mercy of Holly. Will finds a relief and control over the metal in his body that he never had without Holly and Holly finds a protector against unknown assassins trying to kill her; thus we have our two protagonists bound together.

I have now thrown out the terms, elemental, demon, and clockwork heart, which if you haven't read the series could make you feel confused and overwhelmed. There is no way for me to shortly and coherently summarize all the components that make up this incredible world Ms. Callihan has created. Suffice to say there is the group Suppression of Supernaturals (SOS) who Holly works for and is dedicated to protecting humans from rogue supernaturals and the Nex, a group of supernaturals who wouldn't mind revealing themselves to humans and being in charge, who Will previously worked for. The battle of these two groups is the main tree that the rest of the story arcs branch from but we also have the Ghosts in the Machine (GIM) former humans who have died but been brought back to life with clockwork hearts that flitter between both sides, a bigger spotlight in this book on the fae, and introduction to the Alamut, a group of shadowy assassins. There are also appearances by past main characters that involve a werewolf, more elementals, and a half angel. Again, this can all sound overwhelming but Ms. Callihan does an amazing job of describing, introducing, and interweaving all of these components, without info dumping, world building in such a way that everything is so fantastical. This book would definitely be better read as part of the series so everything is understood but I'm here to tell you the main couple, Will and Holly, are great enough together for someone to randomly pick this book up and read as a standalone.

Holly is a very composed and literal individual, which probably stems from her being a genius and tinkering with mechanics all the time. She also suffers from agoraphobia due to her imprisonment where she meets Will. Will is used to decadence, dirty talk, and general shenanigans due to his demon side. There is some resentment from Will as he blames Holly for what he has become because she created his clockwork heart but that dissipates fairly quickly as he realizes she was as much a victim as him. The way he teases and brings out her feisty side will have you grinning ear to ear and the poignant scenes with such deep heartfelt emotion between the two will have your heart feeling two sizes too big for your chest. Holly tries to keep a wall up enough times that you may find yourself getting angry at her before she finally gives in while I know readers are going to fall helplessly in love with Will. Their out of the bedroom and in the bedroom scenes are scorching. The sexual chemistry made up of anticipation, push/pull, desire, and the way Will calls Holly "love" and dirty talks, will have you fanning yourself. This couple also has such lightness to them when they are together that reading about them is immensely pleasing.

Everything happening is so intriguing that there is never a dull moment and I never wanted to put the book down. I did feel Holly recovered from her agoraphobia pretty quickly and the ending felt somewhat rushed as certain things seemed to be wrapped up with too tidy of bows; these are rather small complaints, though. Even with all the complex story arcs swirling around Will and Holly they were dynamic enough to remain front and center, never over powered by the story. This series started off good and only improves with each book; this latest one is my favorite. Whether you like paranormal, supernatural, or romance this series and especially this book more than delivers. I will definitely be anxiously anticipating the next in the series which will be about Adam, the father of the GIMs and Eliza, Holly's cousin.

This is the 5th book in the Darkest London series. This was a very well done steampunk romance, I enjoyed it a lot. The sixth book in the series will be titled Soulbound and will feature Adam and Eliza. Soulbound is planned to come out in February 2015.This book follows the story of Holly Evernight and William Thorne. Holly is an inventive genius but has had a hard time recovering from the events in Shadowdance, she hasn’t left her house at all. Someone has been trying to kill her and she doesn’t know who. After having his heart replaced with a silver clockwork heart in Shadowdance, William has suffered madness and unspeakable pain. When he charges into Holly’s house intent on seeking revenge, Holly touches Will and her ability to control metal immediately soothes Will’s pain. Now Will is determined to help Holly figure out who is trying to kill her, while Holly is determined to fix Will’s clockwork heart. Woven into this we learn more about Adam, the leader of the GIM.Although I haven’t liked any of the Darkest London books as much as the first book in the series, Firelight, this was still a very engaging read. I really enjoy Holly as a character; she is a bit stereotypical (an ice queen on the outside, but warm beneath her cool exterior) but I still enjoyed her and her crazy inventions. She’s an extremely capable woman that’s struggling with some agoraphobia caused by the events in Shadowdance. I wish we had seen a bit more of Holly's inventions, we see some but I really wish that was a larger part of the story. Will is an interesting character too. The metal from his clockwork heart is slowly taking over the rest of his body. He is in constant pain and falls in and out of madness. In some ways he is also a bit stereotypical (major alpha male and over protective of Holly). Again, I still enjoyed reading about him.We also learn more about the Nyx, Adam, and how the Fae are involved with elemental power. All of that was incredibly interesting. The scenes with Adam and Eliza May are leading up to the next book, Soulbound. Which will be the story of those two characters. The steamy scenes between Will and Holly are really well done, the two have excellent chemistry. Callihan really does an excellent job with romance and with writing very creative and engaging sex scenes. The story is very engaging and hard to put down. There is a lot of action, romance, some nifty steampunk devices, and wonderfully descriptive writing that really brings the scenes alive.Overall a very well done steampunk romance. I would recommend the whole Darkest London series to those who love steampunk with romance. The tone is very similar to Bec McMaster's London Steampunk series which I have also started reading and enjoy.
