About this audiobook

New York Times Bestseller written and narrated by Jason Segel!

Jason Segel, multitalented actor, writer, and musician, teams up with New York Times bestselling author Kirsten Miller for the hilariously frightening, middle-grade novel Nightmares!, the first audiobook in a trilogy about a boy named Charlie and a group of kids who must face their fears to save their town.

Sleeping has never been so scary. And now waking up is even worse!

Charlie Laird has several problems.

1. His dad married a woman he is sure moonlights as a witch.
2. He had to move into her purple mansion, which is NOT a place you want to find yourself after dark.
3.He can't remember the last time sleeping wasn't a nightmarish prospect. Like even a nap.

What Charlie doesn't know is that his problems are about to get a whole lot more real. Nightmares can ruin a good night's sleep, but when they start slipping out of your dreams and into the waking world-that's a line that should never be crossed.

And when your worst nightmares start to come true...well, that's something only Charlie can face. And he's going to need all the help he can get, or it might just be lights-out for Charlie Laird. For good.

Praise for Nightmares!

"In Segel's reading, we get many versions of him - bellowing villain, hissing snakes, exhausted dad and wisecracking stepmom… [He] exudes an exuberant joy in the telling and an absence of cynicism that suits a writer of middle-grade fiction."-New York Times

"It will be evident to listeners that Jason Segel is having fun narrating his first book. This fun middle-grade story would make good listening on a car trip. Segel's performance is lively enough for those of all ages to enjoy."-AudioFile

"Coraline meets Monsters, Inc. in this delightfully entertaining offering from actor [Jason] Segel and co-author [Kirsten] Miller."-Publishers Weekly

"[Nightmares!] succeeds at scaring and amusing in equal measure...[It's] sweet, charming, and imaginative."-Kirkus

"Segel...and Miller build an entertaining, cartoony world full of scary (but not too scary) monsters, silly jokes, plucky kid heroes, and a cinematic plot that trundles onward to a satisfying conclusion, with a promise of adventures to come."-Booklist

"An engaging and creative story…woven with a generous amount [of] humor."-VOYA

For more reviews, gifs, Cover Snark and more, visit A Reader of Fictions. I would be lying if I said I had any interest in Nightmares! aside from the fact that Jason Segel wrote it. Have I been disappointed in innumerable celebrity books in the past? Why, yes. Do I think that actors are necessarily talented authors? In many cases, probably not. Will I ever learn? Unlikely. But, hey, sometimes celebrity books aren’t just capitalizing on fame for a book deal; sometimes they’re good. It’s true that Jason Segel’s narration was a big part of my enjoyment, but Nightmares! is also a great middle grade story in its own right. My intro was all about Jason Segel, but I am very aware that he’s not the sole author. I suspect much of the credit, perhaps most, is due to Kirsten Miller. She’s an established author and I’ve heard good stuff about How to Live a Life of Crime. Obviously I don’t know who did what, but the two obviously made a great team. Nightmares! is both delightfully silly and surprisingly deep.I must admit that I didn’t find the nightmare landscape all that thrilling. The various monsters don’t have what it takes to scare me, despite me being a scaredy cat. The things that amused and terrified me as a kid aren’t the same as what get me now. Though the giant cockroach was still upsetting. I’ll give them that. Of course, the giant cockroach was a nice nightmare, and I would still spray it with RAID until it stopped twitching. NOT OKAY. For that reason, the adventurey parts were not hugely interesting to me.However, I do love what the nightmares stand for. Sure, the nightmares are horrors and in and of themselves, especially when they can interact directly with the kids, but they actually represent deeper and more logical fears. There’s a reason that Paige is afraid of the dark and that Charlie’s witch looks like his stepmother. The book really considers the way the human mind will create a fear to mask the one that really bothers us. Rather than dealing with the sadness over a parents’ death, for example, a kid might be afraid of the dark.Nightmares! is probably best compared to Monsters, Inc. The set up is actually really similar. There’s a whole industry built up to keep kids scared every night while they dream. However, most nightmares are actually trying to help the kids deal psychologically and get over their fears. Unfortunately, evil nightmares are trying to take over to keep kids scared. I thought that it was cool how not all nightmares are bad, except, you know, for the cockroach because they should all die and are never acceptable. The real reason I enjoyed this so much, though, was Jason Segel. The best audiobook narrators, I think, are not only willing but delighted to sound completely ridiculous. This is why Katherine Kellgren is one of the best narrators of all time. Jason Segel, as you might guess from his performances is just such a narrator. He does all sorts of crazy voices and reads with a lot of emotion. He’s just fun to listen to. His voices for females are pretty abominable, but otherwise his performance was perfection.Nightmares! is a sweet book about family and overcoming your fears. It’s also really awesome on audiobook.

What a great fun read! At sometime everyone must learn to face their fears, but for Charlie that time will come sooner than for others. He has to protect not just himself but his little brother as well. He is convinced his stepmother is a witch biding her time until she can cook up his little brother and sell him bits and pieces in her herbatorium. After a few trips through dreamland Netherworld he is more sure than ever, and when the witch takes him through the portal he has no choice but to follow. In the Netherworld he meets friends and foes, and he must help others face their fears to escape from the President, and gain back his life. The book is full of wonderful imaginary and fanciful illustrations that keep the setting of the book. As I read the first few chapters I almost thought they were talking about me, as they describe the witch in the purple house. That just made this story more enjoyable. This makes a nice book for any age, and would work well as a read-aloud as well. Now time to scare up book 2.#LitsyAtoZ#mount TBR#beatthebacklist #Wedding#bingocardFor the main character his dad’s wedding is a disaster. He lost his mother and now a stepmonster is trying to replace her. Disastrous wedding.

This story was so VERY CURIOUS and yet so much fun (if you can call running for your life, trying to save your family, and facing your worst fears fun, that is). I was curious about the "powerful witch" he kept focusing on, and while there were a lot of similarities between her and you-know-who, I couldn't believe it was one in the same. Was it? Oh, well...I can't spoil THAT for you. Also, Charlie's "darkness" was something both otherworldly and of this world, a conundrum I did not expect, but appreciated. Who knew nightmares could have a purpose other than torture or scaring you half to death! Definitely a fun concept, and I can't wait to check out more of the series. My only catch point, the rather abrupt ending and the use of "stepmonster" after all that transpired.

I was gifted this book for the LiterALLy BOOKiSh (on Facebook) Blind-date-with a book swap. The criteria of the swap was for the sender to choose one of THEIR favorite books, not to choose from the recipient's wishlist. Although I would have most likely not chosen this book myself (as it's middle grade), I'm glad my match chose it because it's quite good! It's a well written and paced adventure with underlying themes for adults. The storyline is unique. I might even read the second book.

Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller is a "scary" novel, although I don't think you'll be too scared to sleep.Charlie's father has remarried and he and his little brother now live in the weirdest house in town--it towers over the town and is purple. The problem is that ever since they moved in, Charlie has terrible nightmares about a witch. They are really convincing. Due to these nightmares, Charlie tries to stay away, which has made him very tired, very irritable, and downright mean. His little brother loves their stepmother, but Charlie becomes convinced that she is the witch and she will destroy their lives. It sounds crazy and Charlies knows that; but, because it is so real, Charlie can't laugh it off. Charlies friends are worried about him. Slowly, we realize that they are having nightmares as well. Charlie even begins to see the witch while awake. This cannot be happening! It's impossible. He still doesn't feel comfortable enough to tell his friends, but he does tell them that his stepmother is a witch and plans on hurting his little brother. Charlie will have to save his little brother with some help from some unusual places. If you ever thought about how scary it would be if your nightmares became true in real life, here's the book for you. Every nightmare you've heard of is in this book. I think this book will be well-liked by middle school readers!

Charlie feels his world is falling apart after the death of his mother and his father's remarriage. His nightmares feel real, and he tries to avoid sleeping until the witches from his dreams show up in his waking life. He must go a quest in the Netherworld to save himself, his friends, and his brother, all the while foiling a plot by the evil President Fear. Humor is woven into this creative fantasy full of memorable nightmarish characters.

Charlie Laird’s mom passed away a few years ago. He thought he was managing to deal with the sorrow. Until recently, when a woman named Charlotte DeChant, moved into town. She took possession of the the hideous purple mansion on top of the hill overlooking the town of Cypress Creek. Within a few days she filled the old house to overflowing with a jungle of creepy plants and opened an herbalist shop in town. There Charlie and his friends spied her dispensing all sorts of weird concoctions to the local townsfolk. In less than a year, much to Charlie’s chagrin, Charlotte and Charlie’s dad, Andrew, were married. To make matters worse, Andrew, Charlie, and Charlie’s younger brother, Jack all moved into the creepy mansion with Charlotte, leaving all of Charlie’s fond memories behind in his old house. Charlie thought everything Charlotte did was very weird. In fact, he thought she was a witch, a real witch. He even started calling her his stepmonster. As things continued to get weirder, Charlie started having nightmares about being carried off by a witch. A witch, who in fact looked very much like Charlotte. The nightmares were so real that Charlie tried staying awake night after night to avoid them. This only succeeded in making him cranky and tired both at home and at school. His new principal at school, Mr. Stearns, was mean enough to give any student nightmares. It seemed to Charlie that Mr. Stearns was especially picking on him. Charlie soon found that he was unable to get along with anyone, his friends at school, his parents, even his brother, Jack. He refused to tell anyone what was bothering him and why he couldn’t sleep. The witch in his dreams had told him, if she couldn’t have him, she would take his brother back to the land of nightmares instead of him. Will Charlie be brave enough to face up to his fears and follow the witch and his brother into the land of nightmares? Will he be able to battle his worst nightmares and save Jack? Will he succumb to his fears and loose Jack? Will they find their way out of the land of nightmares or be trapped there forever? I liked this book. It took a while to really get interesting, but then took off and delivered a good story. The book was provided for review by Random House Children’s Books.
