Not only was the writing and the plot true to the style and spirit of the Doyle canon, with rich, evocative descriptions, but also the acting was superb. Each character rang true with the accents and style of delivery, bringing out the strong bond of friendship and camaraderie between Holmes and Watson, sometimes showing forbearance or exasperation, other times admiration, affection or humor. The other characters were also beautifully played, and the policeman, whom Holmes "tolerated" was one which I hope will return in other stories by Mann. To top it off, the book was not merely read or even merely acted out--there was music and wonderful foley sound effects of footsteps, birdsong, crackling fire, broken glass, creaking floorboard, and sound environments, such as echo-y hollow-sounding speech in the morgue, which brought to mind a subterranean cavern. A pleasure to listen to and into which to immerse oneself.
