Mama has trained up her baby possums in the ways of their breed, and now it's time for all of them-even little Appleblossom-to make their way in the world. Appleblossom knows the rules: she must never be seen during the day, and she must avoid cars, humans, and the dreaded hairies (sometimes known as dogs). Even so, Appleblossom decides to spy on a human family-and accidentally falls down their chimney! The curious Appleblossom, her faithful brothers-who launch a hilarious rescue mission-and even the little girl in the house have no idea how fascinating the big world can be. But they're about to find out!
With a tight-knit family and a glimpse at the world from a charming little marsupial's point of view, this cozy animal story is a perfect read-aloud and a classic in the making.

Reviews for Appleblossom the Possum
24 ratings8 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book starts out with a very naturalistic bent, but ends as a wildly fictitious story. There are many sections, especially early on, that seem to tell more than show, as they try to impart factual details about possum life. The characters are developed well in the middle of the book, but I didn't like that the author shifted away from the main story for so many chapters near the end. The pictures are very nice, but there aren't that many of them. This book might be good for teaching perspective, as we get to see situations from the point of view of the possums, a dog, a little girl, and her parents. However, it has room for improvement in plot, pacing, and development.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book is full of bad grammar and peril. There is death right from the get go and seems to follow them everywhere. Not a gentle kind fun book by any stretch.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I adored this book! Appleblossom is one of the possoms born in her mother's first litter, so her name begins with A, as do all of her siblings' names. Mama has them practice their acting skills regularly, and it's really fun until they learn why: they need to use these skills against three evil monsters: people, cars and dogs. Appleblossom still manages to end up in a people house, but the girl of the house is not mean or scary but wants a friend.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Appleblossom is one child in a large possum family, and this is her story. It's sweet, cute and occasionally very funny, but as a complete novel never quite lives up to its promise. The plot seemed to peter out before the book did, and once Big Poss (the father possum) shows up, the book goes downhill from there.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Narrated by Dustin Hoffman. Appleblossom gets trapped inside the monsters' house (people and a dog) but finds a friendly spirit in the smallest people (Izzy the girl). Hoffman has a hey-day with this charming family-friendly story, bringing eye-winking humor to the acting terms (acting is an important possum skill so they can play dead, you know!) and presenting the young possums as cuddly and appealing. His Old Poss is a particular hoot. Play this while driving over the river and through the woods to grandma's!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was cute and would be a good read-aloud, but I liked 'Firefly Hollow' better.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Me encanta HGS! Muy cándido! las voces de DHL geniales!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5children's fiction (grades 1-3) young possum gets separated from family, rescued by human girl, reunited with family). I picked this up because HG Sloan is one of my favorite writers, but this turned out to be not-exciting standard children's fare (as in, only kids would ever be interested in consuming it). It was ok, just not particularly interesting--and I'm not saying that every book has to start with a horrific car accident or abusive family situation, just that this one has a different audience that isn't me.
