    Entertaining comic crime fiction.

The cover showing a cigarette smoking beagle gives a good clue about the tone of this novel that is part mystery, part theater of the absurd. Set mostly in New London, CT., this book has a pair of mismatched detectives, a quartet of quirky con artists, a group of motorcyclists, a homeless man named Fidget, a make-believe couple in witness protection, and unsavory mafia bad guys. Midway through it felt like the book could have been shortened, but the main characters are endearing in their odd ways, and some of the situations are indeed hilarious.

This was the most fun I've had with a book in a long time. Full of chuckles without being silly or ridiculous, "Is Fat Bob Dead Yet" is full of plot twists that will keep you guessing. The writer sometimes switches to a second person plural voice where he frankly discusses his characters and story-telling technique, but these little bits of discussion don't last long. I found them endearing, but some readers may find them annoying. It's hard to know whether to root for the comical cops or Connor, the tender-hearted and reluctant bad guy. Bless his heart, he can't tell a lie because he blushes and his eyes "go all weird." But he perseveres because it's his job. The book is full of worse bad guys than Connor, and they'll all get their due, but I kind of hope Connor finds a better life.

When Connor Raposo witnesses a gruesome motorcycle/dump truck accident and recognizes one of the observers at the scene, he immediately wonders if it was truly an accident. The dichotomy is understandable: Connor spends his days involved in schemes and scams in which the truth is seldom, if ever, present.Detectives Benny Vikström and Manny Streeter, assigned to investigate the motorcycle accident, are asking the same questions Connor is asking, the answers to which may well determine if he lives or dies. Readers in search of a quirky puzzle are likely to find this offbeat mystery whimsical and entertaining. While the omniscient narrator is rather off-putting, the suspense of the masterfully-written story is buried within the absurd.
