About this audiobook
From the author of the beloved New York Times bestselling book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and the creator and star of The Mindy Project comes a collection of essays that are as hilarious and insightful as they are deeply personal.
In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it's falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you're constantly reminded that no one looks like you.
In "How to Look Spectacular: A Starlet's Confessions," Kaling gives her tongue-in-cheek secrets for surefire on-camera beauty, ("Your natural hair color may be appropriate for your skin tone, but this isn't the land of appropriate-this is Hollywood, baby. Out here, a dark-skinned woman's traditional hair color is honey blonde.") "Player" tells the story of Kaling being seduced and dumped by a female friend in L.A. ("I had been replaced by a younger model. And now they had matching bangs.") In "Unlikely Leading Lady," she muses on America's fixation with the weight of actresses, ("Most women we see onscreen are either so thin that they're walking clavicles or so huge that their only scenes involve them breaking furniture.") And in "Soup Snakes," Kaling spills some secrets on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and close friend, B.J. Novak ("I will freely admit: my relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.")
Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who's ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who've never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.
Editor's Note
Infinitely likable…
“Why Not Me?” serves to shatter our illusions of celebrity. We’ve all been told time and again that hard work brings success, but Kaling actually practices what she preaches. And she preaches it in an infinitely likable way.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Laugh out loud! How did she get into MY head?? Great address to graduates of Harvard, great essay on How to be (and remain) confident that I intend to share with others! ENJOY!

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I did not enjoy this at all - found it to be quite pointless and not funny. I think my dislike stems from the fact that I despise self-deprecating humour. Her jokes fell flat in every case - especially the 'cum-my-pants'. I didn't even find that particularly disgusting just entirely not funny.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This audiobook started on the wrong foot with me, because the opening story is about how Mindy brought candy to school when she was the new kid. She explains that this was her pathetic attempt to get people to like her. I saw it more as a cultural disjunction. Gift-giving is a way that people relate to each other and show good will in Asian culture.
And I saw her "explanation" as a travesty against herself in a pathetic attempt to get people to like her.
After a few days, I continued listening (Scribd's one audiobook per month constraint can be beneficial, as it prevents you from moving too quickly onto another). The book is pretty funny and entertaining.2 people found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mindy Kaling never disappoints. She's wonderfully honest, observant, and brings a unique comedic tone to just about everything. I love the way she tackles feminism and talks about Hollywood so openly. An insightful and joyous read.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5yep, another book you should (or perhaps should not) listen when you are with your headphones in public. Think whether it's OK for you to laugh uncontrollably while other people look at you like'what the heck?'

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mindy is a fantastic writer because she doesn't hold back. It was an enjoyable audio book because she read t herself and at times I couldn't stop laughing. Her honesty, ability to laugh at herself and talk about her insecurities makes her a great role model. This is a definite read and/or listen to book!
