Acclaimed historians Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green paint a moving portrait of the infamous Trail of Tears. Despite protests from statesmen like Davy Crockett, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay, a dubious 1838 treaty drives 17,000 mostly Christian Cherokee from their lush Appalachian homeland to barren plains beyond the Mississippi. For 4,000, this brutal forced march leads only to their death.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A clean and concise telling of the tragedy befalling the Cherokees in the 1830's. The last sentence in this little book (164 pages) sums it up nicely; "The Trail of Tears is their story, but it is also an American story. And if it is a story that we are not proud of, we should make sure that its lesson is well learned: Racism, greed, and political partisanship can subvert even the noblest American ideals." For another look at the Cherokee odyssey, see John Ehle's excellent TRAIL OF TEARS, which tells the story from the viewpoint of the Ridge faction.

Gives voice to the nameless thousands of indigenous people who where murdered and mistreated by greedy, self serving white people in a plan to steal their land and destroy their culture. This is a shameful period in American history, and needs to be taught to every single student in this country.
America is a fraud.
