This is the first book in the new Guardian Angelinos series. In this first story Zach Angelino returns from overseas and doesn't contact the woman he was seeing before he left, Samantha Fairchild. One night he happens to meet up with her and finds her in need of protection as someone is trying to kill her. There is a lot of action and confusion on whether the police are helping them or against them. Zach's sister Vivi volunteers to help them and she gets caught up in the danger. The supporting characters are the large family that Zach and Vivi have and a special person in Sam's life. This is a fast read and kept my interest. I didn't think the author could match her Bullet Catchers series but I think this series will equal it.

This was alright, but a little bit mushy & unevenly paced for my own personal preferences. Still, if you enjoy light escapism with a mix of mystery, action & romance - this will work for you. My review might be coloured by the fact I've read the other books in this series and really enjoyed them, and going back to finally read the first in the series might have set me up for disappointment. Often, these series improve as new ones are written.

Series note: The Guardian Angelinos is a spin-off of The Bullet Catchers. However, any connection between the series is superficial at best and mainly consists of some name dropping, which makes no difference to the plot.

Edge of Sight has a well-developed suspense story and a sweet romance although Zach and Sam aren't as compelling as some of St. Claire's other couples.

Zach is physically and emotionally scarred after his experiences as an army ranger. While his vulnerabilities do engage the reader on a certain level, the tortured hero vibe is lacking. Moreover, his behavior toward his adoptive family and toward Sam make him appear sullen and churlish. He does manage to recognize the error of his ways and redeem himself by the end.

Sam is also a conflicted heroine. On the one hand, she stands her ground with Zach and calls him on his past behavior rather than falling straight back into his arms after he broke her heart. On the other hand, she has lost confidence in herself and seems incapable of making any decisions whether right or wrong.

The best aspect of the book is the plot revolving around an assassin targeting Sam after she witnesses a murder. The action scenes are tense and exciting and the villains a diverse lot. St. Claire is skilled at misdirection and Edge of Sight is no exception. Apart from one or two co-conspirators, the villains caught me by surprise, especially the assassin. The motivation for the original crime is a little unclear but does not detract from the overall reading experience.

The Rossi/Angelino family dynamics is another highlight - they love, they fight and they eat. Zach's snarky sister Vivi and FBI cousin Marc each have their own books and I look forward to reading them soon.

A good romantic suspense with an exciting ending. I liked how the hero and heroine moved through their issues and how this family worked together. I look forward to the rest of the series. After Samantha witnesses a murder she goes to hide with a friend whose brother Zach was an old lover and ends up under his protection.

This romantic suspense, my first from Ms. St. Claire, was a cut above the average murder mystery, the first in a new series featuring the Angelino family. I would actually rate it a solid 3.5. I couldn't decide whether to round up or down, but regardless, I recommend this for fans of Roxanne St. Claire (or suspense stories featuring a proud, hunky man who is humbled by the love of a strong-willed, but adoring, female). I would call their relationship more lust than love throughout much of the story, and there are several scenes detailing their physicality without leaving much to the imagination, one at an oddly inopportune moment that made me smile and shake my head.

Zach Angelino, former military, and his sister Vivi, newspaper reporter, have to spring into action to protect Samantha, who is his lover and her good friend after she witnesses a professional hit at work. Her image is captured on the security camera, which the shooter confiscates. I correctly guessed one of the pieces to the mystery puzzle almost right away, but a few other pieces didn't fall into place until near the climatic ending. I especially enjoyed the parts featuring the whole Angelino clan: a cop,a former FBI agent and gunshop owner, a therapist, plus a computer hacker. Then there is Uncle Nino, an elderly Italian man who likes to meddle in his family's doings. Vivi wants to form a family business--professional bodyguard & investigative service-- "The Guardian Angel(inos), and she certainly has the right type of relatives to do that! Their interactions bring some added interest to the storyline and will most likely be recurring in the rest of the series.

I found the first part of the book to move a bit slowly, but the last third kept me intrigued until the end. I would probably read the next in the series. THREE & 1/2 STARS

I'm already an admitted Roxanne St. Claire fan. However, this book is even beyond her usual excellent story telling and suspense. It's scarier, taughter, and definitely a page turner. I started it on the treadmill and then had to stay up until 2:00am to finish it. Going to work the next day was really a pain. :) Highly Recommended.

A good story when the focus is on either or both of the H/H, but the "twin" story about the development of the Guardian Angelinos rates as silly.

I enjoyed myself while I was reading Edge of Sight, but overall, it didn't make that much of an impression on me.The best part of the book for me was a secondary character, Vivi. She was a very smart, kick-ass, get things done woman, and I might pick up her book if she gets one.I definitely think this book felt like the setup for a series-- many characters were introduced, and most of them had minor roles in the story. The vast majority were single, and there are more than just Vivi that I'd enjoy knowing more about. JP (known by our hero (who doesn't get along with him) as Just Perfect)was also intriguing.I really should say more about Samantha and Zach. I really liked Samantha's backstory, her history of why she was persona non grata with the local police and how she ended up heading to law school. Unfortunately, I felt that she spent much of the time in her current life hiding-- not just from the bad guys, which was a smart call, but from the actions she could take to change the situation with Zach, as well as with the overall ugly mess she was involved in.I never saw Zach's appeal. He's a damaged, moody guy of action, but with a heart of gold, if he just stops protecting it. I know this works for many readers, and I rarely swoon over any romance hero. The suspense aspects of the book were exciting but not mentally engaging.Overall, the book flew by. I had fun, but don't miss it now that it's done.

Before you read this book, go to the author’s website and read the free prequel. It’s not necessary, but definitely worth it.Roxanne St Claire is one of my favourite writers. Her romantic suspense is excellent – a perfect balance between the relationship and the suspense – and I absolutely love her Bullet Catchers series. This is the first book in a very loosely-related new series – also about bodyguards – and it was so much better than so many books I’ve read in the last few months that it made me start rethinking my other reviews. The big difference between this book and a lot of other romantic suspense is that I actually felt the connection between the hero and the heroine. There’s a moment right at the beginning when Zach kisses Samantha’s hair so lightly she doesn’t even know he’s done it, and it said more about the people and the relationship than chapters of gratuitous sex does in many other authors’ books. Both leads are damaged from major mistakes in their pasts. Both have to live with the consequences of their mistakes, consequences that ruined other people’s lives. Zach’s problems come from his time in the army – and he had the wounds to show it. Sam’s life has changed completely in the three years since Zach last saw her, and her involvement in the wrongful conviction of an innocent man now effects everything she does. It’s also the reason she has to turn to Zach for help when she witnesses a murder; the police want nothing to do with her. Sam knows Zach from a brief but intense relationship in the past, after which he went to war and never contacted her again. The Rossis and Angelinos – the heroes and heroines of this new series –are cousins of Johnny Christiano from the Bullet Catchers, who just happens to be one of my all-time favourite heroes. The difference between this series and the one before it is that the Bullet Catchers are rich – a huge international organisation – while the Angelinos are just a family starting from scratch. There’re so many moments in this book that make it better than others. It felt realistic; if someone’s injured they stay injured and it has an effect on their behaviour, and if there’s a problem it’s not miraculously cured by a superhero. Zach and Sam’s relationship felt real, and I loved the way they sorted out their issues. If nothing else, this book made me wonder why it’s been so long since I read anything from Roxanne St Claire. You do not have to read the Bullet Catchers series first – but you should because it’s cool. I love them all (well, except for the allegedly Australian hero who walks around spouting decidedly un-Australian phrases such as, “God save the queen”). This author creates some of the best characters out there, suspense that actually makes me worried/anxious/frightened/all of that, complex stories, and an excellent romance to boot.Go buy and read.

Edge of Sight (Guardian Anglinos) by Roxanne St. Claire Romantic Suspense - Oct 26th, 2010 4 stars Edge of Sight begins the Guardian Angelinos series. This book starts out promising and the author brings in real and believable characters. Readers of her book will enjoy this book. Samantha’s life is looking up. She has just been accepted to Harvard where she hopes to become a lawyer, but in meantime she is working as a waitress to pay the bills. When a high profile columnist comes to dine and she goes to find the special wine he requests, she comes back only to find that the columnist dead and the murderer leaving. When she tries give the police a description of the killer she is blackballed. Unfortunately, because she work to free an innocent man, many officers in the Boston force lost their jobs and won’t believe her. But Samantha knows that the killer will have tape of her witnessing his murder. She called her friend a journalist for help. But when she arrives her friend is gone and in her place is her brother and Samantha’s ex-boyfriend. Zach cared for Samantha but didn’t want her love. He left her without any explanations. After being in the military and losing his eye, they no longer want him. When he finds Samantha all the old feelings return. He persuades her that her can protect her but he must deal with deep passion that lays buried. But can he guard her against an expert assassin? This book begins well. I enjoyed how the author made me care about her characters. I really liked Samantha because she has a high moral center and is a woman I could easily relate with. But, I was conflicted by Zach’s behavior. Firstly, because he left Sam in the past. And secondly, even though he intends to do so again in this story, Zack still selfishly insists on protecting her even though he could give the job to anther friend just because he wants to spend time with her. But he still won’t commit to Sam. I was also frustrated because Sam keeps asking him why he left her and he keeps putting her off. I did feel for the pain of his injury and although he generally meant well, I never felt he is good enough for Sam because I really felt he played with her feelings. And after a while I was a little upset with Sam for continuing to forgive Zach when he is so contradictory. The pacing of this novel was fantastic and although I pretty much knew who the assassin was from the 1st chapter I did enjoy the overall story. I was a little disappointed because I have loved her other books but I just could not warm up to this one. The writing is strong and the pacing is great but I just couldn’t get over the disappointing hero.A solid thriller that fans will enjoy but I was somewhat frustrated with the relationship between the main characters.Reviewed by Steph from the Bookaholics Romance Book Club
