    Ursula Kroeber Le Guin (1929-2018) was a celebrated author whose body of work includes twenty-three novels, twelve volumes of short stories, eleven volumes of poetry, thirteen children’s books, five essay collections, and four works of translation. The breadth and imagination of her work earned her six Nebula Awards, seven Hugo Awards, and SFWA’s Grand Master, along with the PEN/Malamud and many other awards. In 2014 she was awarded the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and in 2016 she joined the short list of authors to be published in their lifetimes by the Library of America.

      Ursula Le Guin is one of my all time favorite science fiction authors. This collection of short stories holds up alongside any classic American short story writing.

      These 18 short stories gave me the opportunity to get acquainted with Le Guin’s realistic fiction, if you can call it that. These stories, unlike the ones in this collection’s companion volume “Outer Space, Inner Lands”, are all set in our planet, but there are occasional hints of magic in here. The first few stories are part of her Orsinian tales, stories set in the imaginary central European country of Orsinia. There are also stories set in her native Oregon, and stories with the unidentified setting of folktales.The stories collected here are really not very different from the fantasy and science fiction that first made me fall in love with Le Guin’s writing. Her use of language – its elegance, its precision and its rhythm – is as impressive as always. The same goes for her complexity of her characterisation, as well as for her insight with both what motivates people as individuals and into the power systems that impact our lives. Recommended.

      I've always felt like I should have read more stories by Ursula Le Guin, but I bounced off of "Wizard of Earthsea" back in highschool and just gave up. Then I stumbled across "The Birthday of the World" and fell totally in love, which was very strange for me because I don't usually like short stories.I was a bit disappointed when I first read the introduction to "Where on Earth" that it was fiction and not science fiction. I really love the alternate biology and the strange societies in her SF stories, but in the end I'm not disappointed by this book because it turns out that I love the people in her stories, even if they are human and not alien. This book has definitely inspired me to investigate more of Le Guin's work.

      Never a bad read, humor and thought provoking at the same time. The 18 stories will provide enjoyment for all tastes and new and old fans. I am always amazed, how even with a short story I become part of the written world so quickly, in her books.

      Let me start by saying that a more intelligent author doesn't come to mind and that I am a huge fan is Mrs leguin. This book was well written and I was glad to hear her voice in this book once again. However I found the subjects to mostly be unimpressive.
