Jesse Petersen

Jesse Petersen grew up a geek in love with Star Wars, video games (King’s Quest, anyone?), books of all kinds, and even the occasional RPG. Eventually she grew up, at least in body, but she still loves anything with whimsy, and her books reflect that. Whether it’s funny zombies or monsters in group therapy, you’ll find books that mix giggles with gore. You can find Jesse at her website JessePetersen.net, her Twitter @jessepet and on Facebook, where she talks about Weird Al, cats, and even her books.

Sarah and David are still fighting the zombies, and are continuing their journey towards the wall and safety, if the wall really exists, dividing human people from the roving zombie hordes. Author Jesse Peterson manages to keep the story fresh, in spite of the continuing battles with the zombies. But don't expect the story to end with this installment, or for things go well with our hero couple. It IS the zombie apocalypse, after all, and Sarah and Dave have more zombies to conquer before they can rest on their laurels.

Dave and Sarah have the cure and are on the road to the rumored Midwest Wall, hoping to deliver the cure to government scientists. Along the way, they run into Nicole Nessing, a reporter from a TMZ type TV show. Of course, it hasn’t been broadcasting during the apocalypse but Nicole is still filming. She thinks that when this is all over (will it ever be over?), she’ll get rich off of all the footage she’s shot. This makes her a pretty annoying character. As they journey towards the Wall, they encounter numerous obstacles that I won’t go into detail about for fear of spoiling it for you. Along the way, Sarah notices that Dave is exhibiting some strange behavior that she doesn’t quite know what to make of. Dave himself is slow to notice. In Eat Slay Love, Dave and Sarah come closer to finding out how and why the zombie apocalypse started but they don’t find everything out. Hopefully, that will come in the next book. Apparently, the fourth installment is the last. I read on the author’s blog that she didn’t continue on with the series after the fourth because sales of the third weren’t that great. And now I’m having trouble finding a copy of the fourth book, The Zombie Whisperer. It’s not on Amazon anymore. I tweeted the author but I haven’t heard back yet. I hope I can find a copy and that it doesn’t end with a major cliff hanger that’s never going to get resolved!

Humorous and scary at the same time, a real zombie adventure. This book takes you places you never hope to see and it does it with a sense of humor. The main characters are a couple just out of couple therapy, full of witty comments and love for each other.
Dave and Sarah race across the US to reach the safe zone in Illinois. The world has been eaten by brain craving zombies. They shot, cut and blow there way along their path meeting some a few unique characters along the way. My favorite being a drugged out rock star. They stubble into bad luck and then more bad luck. Ah, but there is a tricky surprise with Dave that may help them survive after all.
It was a slow start for me but by the end of the book I was so hooked ! I really like the character and want to know how it all ends for them. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Yeah, I'm pretty sad this is the last (for now) book in this series. Sarah and David were such fantastic characters and their adventures in zombie hunting were always devoured in one marathon reading session.

Listened/Read for Fun (Audible/Physical Copy)Tracking Books Read Review (Short)Overall Rating: 4.00Story Rating: 3.50Character Rating: 4.50Audio Rating: 3.50 (not part of the overall rating)First Thought when Finished: Eat Slay Love was an interesting journey and some really good kick ass action!Overall Thoughts: Eat Slay Love was not my favorite book in the series but it was still very enjoyable. Sarah & David are still kicking ass but also dealing with David's "difference (fall out from Flip This Zombie). I have to admit that I really loved the edition of a couple of characters (won't give spoilers but these two come in fairly early--one girl, one guy). Jesse writes really great characters. They are often filled with spunk and vigor. I was glad to see that there is a 4th book in the series! The last of the book would have worked as an ending point but I think there was still so much story left to tell. I will be picking it up soon!Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Cassandra Campbell /Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins I am usually a fan of Cassandra Campbell but overall she wasn't a great fit for me and this series. I think she did a stellar job with Sarah but I never warmed up to her voice of David. However, it is mostly because I had "David" in my head a different way. This is usually why I won't start a series late on Audio.Final Thought: Super glad there is a 4th book in the series.

Sarah and David have been through a lot together: the zombie apocalypse, bionic zombies, mad scientists, backstabbing people, killing their zombie therapist, the list goes on. David was actually bitten by a zombie, but they administered a cure in the nick of time and he seepyms fine. They still have a vial of the cure and hope to take it over the fabled Wall in the east. Things are going along as normal as can be in the zombie apocalypse until David starts behaving strangely. He suddenly has superhuman strength. He needs less sleep and when he does, he breathes really strangely. Sarah doesn't know what to make of it, but definitely doesn't want to alarm him. Then comes new (not always welcome) additions to their group: a "journalist" (read stalkerazzi) intent on recording every minute of the apocalypse and an aging, drugged up rock star. Can this rag tag group get the cure over the Wall? Does it even exist and what will they find when they get there? This is the third book in the Living with the Dead series that follows Sarah and David. The first book works out their relationship problems through zombie slayage. The second features their successful zombie killing business (plus some more relationship problems). The third is harder to classify and much less comedic than its predecessors. Eat Slay Love is the best book in the series so far. The complaints that I had about the zombies either having emotion or physical feelings are finally fixed in this book. No zombies running away in fear or flinching at super important moments that save a major character from a big bite. Our characters are in real danger throughout the novel and the intensity doesn't let up. Sarah and David are constantly fighting for their lives through zombies and crazy rednecks bend on making an example out of them for other outsiders. The best thing is that it evolves from silly fluff to more serious, sustainable dystopic plots.Sarah and David are always a joy to read about. Their ability to find humor in just about every situation is fun and even brings this more emotional installment of the series much needed levity. The new characters are much better than the previous books' minor characters. Nicole, the stalkerazzi, was initially very annoying and kind of creepy, but as the story went on, her intelligence and real personality came through. She isn't just a creepy reporter that would do anything to get ahead or get a story, but proves to be a real friend to Sarah and David McCray, the drugged out musician, also proves to be more than just an inconvenient hindrance. I loved these characters and can't wait to see more from them. The only criticism I have is the ending of the book. I had to finish it because I was so engaged in the story, but the ending threw off the momentum a bit. There is a huge reveal near the end and I feel it would have been more effective to stop there and continue the story in the next book. I still very much enjoyed this novel and I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series.

I got an eGalley of this book through NetGalley(dot)com. This is the third book in the Living with the Dead series. I really enjoyed this book and thought it was the best in the series so far. The book is hilarious and lots of fun, but in this installment there is also a complicated and intriguing plot too. Petersen isn't contacted for any more books in this series, but has said she might consider self-publishing more in the future. Shambling in the Dead was recently released and that is a short story set in the same world but with different characters. Petersen also released an anthology set in this world called In the Dead.Sarah and David have been through a lot. David survived his bite and him and Sarah are on their way to the Wall with a cure that could change everything. Then things start going strange...or at least stranger than normal. David is getting stronger, he doesn't need much sleep, and he breathes out more than he breathes in...is he really cured? On their way to the wall Sarah and David are joined by a celebrity news reporter and a drugged up ex-rockstar and from there on things go completely to hell. This was hands down the best book in this series. Sarah and David remain hilarious as usual. Sarah continues to spout whatever comes to mind without really thinking about it and thinks the funniest things while surviving the apocalypse. The new side characters that join the story are very funny as well. Some how the book remains funny without ever really going over the top. This book had a bit of something special that made it more than just another fluffy, funny zombie read (hey, they do exist). This book has a very solid plot that is far-reaching and intriguing. Sarah and David have a solid goal in sight, get the cure to the rest of humanity. Along the way though they are privy to a number of interesting complications...we are talking big time conspiracy stuff that added a lot of depth to the story. The other thing that really made this book engaging was David's strange and mysterious powers. You never knew what he was going to do next and watching how he changed over the course of the book was awesome. The story wrapped up nicely, but there is definitely room for more adventures for Sarah and David. I was disappointed when I heard that no more books were planned for this series, it's just finally getting really, really good!Overall I really enjoyed this installment in the Living with the Dead series. This book is hilarious, lots of fun, and has an incredibly engaging plot. Unlike previous books this book was more than just fluff and fun (although there's nothing wrong with that either). This book has a far-reaching plot and some mysterious things going on. Of course it has the usual laugh out loud parts, the blowing up of numerous zombies, and the awesome action scenes that we saw in previous books. If you like your zombies with a large dose of humor definitely check out this series, it is a lot of fun!

EAY SLAY LOVE, by Jesse Petersen, is the continuation of the Living with the Dead series following Sarah and David's journey to the "Wall" to (hopefully) get the only known zombie-cure to government scientists to end the zombie/human war. But as usual nothing is easy for this once-almost-divorced couple, they are faced with cults, David's strange new bitten-related behaviors, teaming up with a TMZ-like stalkerazzi, a druggie rockstar...and of course BRAAAAIIN eating zombies. I have been dying to read this next installment of one of my favorite horror series's, and I have to say I was very pleased!! My favorite still-together (why are there not more of those in fiction?) couple is back with another huge adventure on their hands. I love the relationship between Sarah and David. They truly are my hero couple and I always get nervous when things (zombies, other cute men/women, zombie escape routes involving splitting up) threaten to tear them apart. I liked how Petersen developed the cure senario with David. He was cured but subtle differences in his behavior suggested he became some sort of zombie/super human hybrid. And Sarah found tooth and nail to keep her once nerd, now buff husband by her side. The other main characters, Nicole and McCray were annoying at first (probably because I thought they were going to get Sarah and David killed) but they grew on me as the book wore on. A big theme in this book was secrets. Sarah kept the cure a secret, and as I slowly learned more about Nicole and McCray I knew that all kept secrets would blow up in the characters faces at some point. One thing (of many) that I love about this series is that there are multiple layers to each book. The overall one being to survive, but I love how Petersen makes little adventures and journeys (physically and mentally) for her characters. It really makes this series enjoyable to read. Definitely pick this one up!

In Flip This Zombie David and Sarah fight off bionic zombies created by the evil Dr. Kevin who regardless of his reasoning behind creating these 'super' zombies also managed to invent a cure (or vaccine... maybe) for the zombie infection!Since the Zombie Apocalypse went down, there have been rumors about the Midwest Wall (WIN... that means I'm safe!!!) Sarah and David are slowly making their way toward the Wall, with the zombie cure- hoping that it actually exists! In route to the Wall, they happen across Nicole Nessing (a TV star from before) running from a pack of zombies. After checking to make sure she hadn't been bitten, Sarah doesn't like the way Dave is practically DROOLING all over her and contemplates throwing her back... Only for a minute though. They get BACK on the road, heavy one blonde, pre-zombie apocalypse TV star and they are immediately bombarded by trucks, inhabited by freaks racing toward them demanding they come to their "camp", because "This here road is our territory." type stuff. They have no choice... "Unfortunately, I felt like we were lambs going to a slaughter, not about to frolic in a field or something." -SarahThe leader of this 'town' (ahem... cult) decided as punishment for trespassing on their road- Dave has to go into 'The Pit' or...you know an in-ground freaking swimming pool filled will 30 zombies! Sarah and Nicole get to go free in order to spread the word to everyone else NOT TO COME NEAR THEIR TOWN. Dude- duh! Make a freaking sign you psycho! "All's fair in love and zombies." -SarahOkay... so now this is the tricky part. Too many details/not enough... spoilers... UGH! Here we go! I'm opting for vagueness, because I HATE to spoil this book! It was SO AMAZING!Does Dave make it through the Zombie Pit of Death??? I'll NEVER tell... But, Sarah finally tells Nicole about the cure that she's got hiding under her shirt... just in case and they pick up ANOTHER stow away ex-rockstar guy! They make it to the famous Midwest Wall, which is actually a HUGE fence, surrounded by heavily armed guards, topped with razor sharp wire and oh- surrounded by a horde of zombies bigger than they've ever seen before. I know. This book is a ROLLER-COASTER ride of crazy zombie AWESOME. Seriously, I was constantly GASPING for breathe, doing the whole "Oh my god! Oh my God! Oh my God!" thing the ENTIRE time. I'm telling you- I love this series more and more with each and every book!
