About this audiobook

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens-a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe-Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth-a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to-especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne...it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

This is the first book in The Dark Elements series. This was a fun YA urban fantasy read (although I struggled to get around the awful cover, I was happy to see the cover has been redone recently). While I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Storm and Fury, I am enjoying learning the background of the characters from that book (Roth, Layla, Zayne).Layla is unique because of her half Warden, half demon heritage. The Wardens have been using her unique ability to see souls to have her tag demons which the Wardens then hunt down and destroy. For years Zayne has been her friend and guardian, but when demons start actively hunting Layla things start to shift. Then Roth enters the picture, he seems to be trying to protect Layla but is a demon himself. Now the end of the world might be looming and Layla needs to figure out who to trust. There's a lot of action here, a neat world, and some romance. I really love the shapeshifting gargoyles and demons. I also enjoyed the whole “trying to prevent Armageddon” plotline. The story is fast paced and easy to read. The dialogue is witty and fun. I am not huge on the love triangle thing going on between Roth, Layla, and Zayne (especially since I already know how things turn out from reading “Storm and Fury”). However, the story is fun and I plan on continuing with the series.I am happy that this series got some new book covers, the old ones were not very representative of the story and looked more like straight-up romance covers.Overall this was a fun YA urban fantasy read with a lot of action and some romance. I enjoy the creative world, engaging characters, and well done action scenes. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Oh my, Jennifer L. Armentrout can write bad boys so good. She can make everything they say sound like gold and everything they do make sense, wrong or right. And Roth was no exception, talk about swoon worthy. Roth's a demon so hey, should I trust him? Not sure if I should but I did right from the start, even with the doubts going through Layla's mind influencing me. I liked his swagger and his cheekiness. Another great character from JLA I'm going to swoon over constantly.

I fell in love with Layla instantly, she was strong and had a breezy kinda personality even with her experiences of being shunned by most of the Wardens for being half demon. Layla was brave and ready to kick ass as necessary.

I always love JLA's characters, she creates people you can't help connecting with and root for. She creates heroines who are strong-minded and badass and heroes who are loyal and brave. And both Roth and Layla represent these traits perfectly. Love White Hot Kiss and I'm sad that I don't have the next book to keep going.

    Hmmm...actually, 3.5 stars...
This book, along with all the books I read, has been on by TBR for a really long time. I never gave much though about Jennifer L. Armentrout's books, but recently, I heard and saw a lot about her, and I wanted to read one of her books. I thought this was a good a book as any to start with so...

WHAT I LIKED: Gargoyles! I've read a lot of books about vampires, werewolves, fairies even, but never about gargoyles. So this book was a refreshing change. I liked the ending too. I loved how the book didn't end right at the climax of the story, like a lot of books I've read tend to do. After the climax, the book continued on until I could get a sense of peace at knowing that things will be pretty low-key for awhile. So I won't be thinking about nothing else besides reading the next book, thankfully. I think there is supposed to be a love triangle between Layla and Roth and Zayne, but I liked that I didn't get to know Zayne enough that I would feel sorry for him, if he didn't get picked. So it was easy for me to choose Roth over Zayne. Another thing I liked was the little excerpt at the end telling the story from Roth's point of view. That was really cool...maybe there should be an entire book told from his perspective?

WHAT I DISLIKED: I could easily predict how Layla and Roth would end up. It was the typical bad-boy-loves-good-girl thing, and it was a bit boring. Another thing: this isn't exactly a dislike, but I hope to see more of Stacy and Sam in the next book. There was one scene, when Stacy acted weird around Sam because she knew he liked her, but I didn't get to learn anything more. I hope in the next book, their friendship will evolve into something more.

Yep...so, even though I did like a lot of things about this book, it didn't reach all my expectations. Granted, my expectations were extremely high, because of all the good things I've heard about this author, but...ah well...
Although this book was good, I don't think this would be my first choice when recommending a book to someone, and I will be reading the next book, but how soon, I have no idea.

Not up to Armentrout's usual Lux standards. Ill read book two obviously, but ill buy the Ebook - not the paperback. Sorry, but this just didn't strike my "I want to have a physical copy on my book shelf" cord..and that's okay, because other people loved it. I do very much appreciate yet another very unique world! Jennifer, you always come up with some of the most interesting world building.

I received this free ARC book from my work at the public library at the beginning of the month and snatched it up in a heartbeat!I was so excited to see this book! I just read the prequel and was wanting to continue the story, so this was a God send. We met Layla very briefly in the prequel novel, but I absolutely adored her in this novel. She knows she's not the most liked person in her world. She can't fit in with the humans, demons or the Wardens. Her normal is not very normal. But being able to tag demons for the Wardens gives her something to do and a "responsibility" in the Warden world. And Roth. Oh Roth. Love me some sexy, bad-news demon! But he definitely wasn't like the other demons and the reader could tell right away. The way he handled Layla was so sweet, but also so hot at times. Zayne was cute, but also annoying for me. He was the "big brother" but most of the time it was also jealousy. And he was being petty for some of the novel. Petty and childish. But he loves Layla - anyone can see that. He just has to figure out who he wants to help the most: Layla or the Wardens. I have to say, as well, that since I know JLA is a huge fan of the show "Supernatural", I most definitely laughed out loud when she referenced that show!Amazing book. Amazing new series that I think will capture a lot of readers attention. This is a new genre with a different "supernatural" creature that might intrigue a new audience. Definitely a great novel and I cannot wait for more! So sad that I have to wait forever - specially since I got this a few months ahead of time!

Holy demon romance. JLA is the queen of writing about hot guys that you know are bad news but you fall in love with anyway. This book was fantastic with lots of good twists, lots of romance, and a whole lotta hotties. The ending left me FREAKING OUT. I need I know what happens!! JLA, you are amazing!

Well I've finally read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book. The experience wasn't all together unpleasant.I actually really enjoyed the fact that this book was about a mythological creature that hasn't been dealt with before: Gargoyles. Gargoyles, or Wardens as they're known in this book have come out of hiding. They are just what their name implies. They are the protectors of the Earth. The Wardens were an interesting part of this story, because I've never encountered anything like them in a book before. I wanted to learn everything I could about the Wardens. And I loved how their powers worked. They seemed kind of angelic in a way: created to protect the Earth from demons and whatnot. They have superhuman powers and abilities, all while managing to look drop dead gorgeous when not in gargoyle form. It was one of the first things that captivated me. Layla is the protagonist in this story, and she's half warden and half demon. She's basically an abomination. Throughout the whole novel, we see Layla trying to figure out which side of herself did she want to succumb to. While I didn't particularly like Layla, I did enjoy seeing her journey throughout the book. One of the reasons I really couldn't connect to Layla was the fact that she was such a typical heroine. She's extremely attractive to apparently every single male character in the story, yet she believes she's not attractive at all."Zayne said I looked like the long-lost sister of the elf in Lord of the Rings. That was a huge confidence booster. Sigh."She wallows in self-pity most of the time, even when everyone else in the world seems to accept her just as she is. She says time and time again about how she can take care of herself, however we can't really confirm this because she's always being rescued. Always. Every single person in this book seems to go out of their way so Layla can never even so much as break a nail. Talk about being sheltered, sheesh.Something else that really didn't sit well with me was the fact that all the female characters in this book had to be so vastly different from Layla. From Eva, the school queen bee who apparently was a trashy whore, to her best friend Stacey, who was, in Layla's own words: a hoebag. I don't like girl on girl hate. I dislike use of the word whore no matter how it's used, so frankly I was more than a little annoyed at how much slut shaming there was. At first I liked Stacey because her personality was sort of a comic relief, but after it became clear that her character was overly sexualized just to contrast Layla's purely virginal persona, I got tired of it.There was a love triangle here. It wasn't entirely annoying, but if you don't like romance taking up the story, then you’ll most likely not enjoy this very much. In scenes where there was a lot of action going on, suddenly everything would stop and just revolve around long, lingering stares, and shared kisses and touches. The love interests are Zayn and Roth. In this review I’ll only be talking about Roth, because frankly Zayne seems pretty irrelevant. Roth: I vacillated the whole book between punching him in the face and swooning. On one hand, Roth is a cocky, pretentious, jerk. On the other, he's pretty damn gorgeous and becomes pretty lovable at the end. He’s a demon, so you absolutely know he’s trouble. It took me a long time to warm up to Roth for various reasons. First of all, he does things like: “Roth reached over the bistro table, caught my hand and brought my fingers to his mouth. Before I could even react, he licked off the tiny specks of sugar the cookie had left behind.”And all Layla can seem to do is have heart palpitations. ISN'T THAT EVEN A LITTLE BIT WEIRD? Then, he does this: “He moved unbelievably fast. I didn’t even have a chance to react. One second he was standing a good three feet away from me and the next his hands were gently clasping my cheeks. […] Roth kissed me.”And what does Layla do? “Every muscle in my body locked up, but I didn’t pull away like I should’ve…”And then, the icing on the cake is that Roth admits to having "observed" Layla for a long time, and SHE DOESNT EVEN BAT AN EYE.Now that I think about it. I don't think this is Roth' fault. No. I think this is Layla's fault. Instead of fraternizing with the stalker, she should've run screaming in the other direction. "For some reason- I didn’t know why- I… I believed him.”But you see, despite Roth being a creepy stalker at first, then he starts become much more tolerable and I ended up loving his character. I blame this on the fact that I love sassy and sarcastic characters and Roth was the definition of that. However, between Roth and Zayne. I actually prefer Roth. Zayne was over protective and ambiguous with his feelings while Roth actually wanted Layla to protect herself. To discover herself. The plot wasn't entirely cliché, although it was pretty easy to know where it was going most of the time (until the ending, but more on that later).I won't deny that despite all my annoyances with this book I really did enjoy some parts. The writing was light and extremely humorous, which made the pages fly by faster. When Layla wasn't being extremely stupid, I could sympathize with her. The paranormal and supernatural aspects of the book were brilliantly brought to life and I loved reading about them. The last few chapters were extremely action packed and kind of surprising. I liked that this book ended and didn't actually leave us with a cliffhanger, but still desiring to read the next one. While I wasn't completely awestruck by this book, I'd definitely read the sequel. JLA sort of created a guilty-pleasure book and while I did not fall in love with it I am sure that many other people will.

    This was a first reads.

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a great, well-written book that effectively combines romance and fantasy.

Layla feels like a misfit. She is half demon and half Warden, a gargoyle being who can choose to look human. To make things worse, she can pull the soul out of anyone with a single kiss. She loves Zayne, the son of the Warden that adopted her, but she cannot get as close to him as she would like. Then she meets Roth, a full-blooded demon who doesn’t have a soul to worry about. Layla has to come to terms with who and what she is, as well as participate in a good vs. evil battle.

White Hot Kiss is a great read for any teen or young adult who like to read about first love, demons, and gargoyles.

Armentrout is a great writer and their has not been one book I have read of hers that I did not enjoy. WHITE HOT KISS is the first full book in her new The Dark Elements series. Layla is half demon, half gargoyle, that alone makes her an outcast with everyone she lives with. The Guardians think they are so superior but it's clear that Layla is so much better than some of them. Except Zayne. Zayne and Layla grew up together and even though they should feel like brother and sister, Layla has a huge crush on him (and it's hinted that Zayne has feelings for her as well). The only problem is that they can never be together. Her kiss alone would suck his soul out. I was actually pretty happy when Roth came into the picture. Roth gives her that chance to be with someone that will love her for her no matter what she is or who is against their relationship. The romance between Roth and Layla is rocky while Layla learns to trust Roth but every interaction between the two was entertaining. With a great storyline and pace WHITE HOT KISS is another great addition to Jennifer L Armentrout's bibliography. It's not a must to read BITTER SWEET LOVE before jumping into WHITE HOT KISS but it gives you a nice back story and lead up to the series so I would suggest reading it before jumping in to book 1.* This book was provided free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

objectively i don't think this is one of jla's better written books- i'm also reading it 5 years after publication so she has grown and changed a lot in this time. i struggled with the pacing, repetitiveness and predicability of some of the twists in this whole series BUT layla, roth, zane, desmond, etc were all incredibly well written characters who I cherished so the 3 stars is really for them more than the plot. also bambi an absolute queen. amazing.

He’s in the deepest pits of hell and I am not happy unless I (vicariously speaking through Layla) smell the sweet and musky scent of Roth again and hear him hum Paradise City.

Demons, gargoyles, and romance oh my!!! JLA provides another heart stopping, kick butt, sexy read with White Hot Kiss. Layla, half demon and half Warden, has been raised with the Wardens for seventeen years. Her best friend, and secret crush, is Zayne a hot 21 year old Warden. Layla is constantly fighting her demon side until she meets Roth, a sexy and dangerous demon. As more and more demons appear topside, Layla learns the truth about her past with the help of Roth. Torn between her loyalty to the Wardens, and Zayne, and being herself with Roth, Layla has to make some tough decisions, especially when her life depends on it. *This is such a great beginning to the series! I'm so torn between Zayne and Roth!*

I wanted to read this one because I loved the prequel and if you've read my blog long, you know I am a long time fan of Jennifer's. Her men are steamy, her main characters easy to relate to, it has exactly my kind of humor, and she writes a darn good story. I didn't really read this synopsis after reading Bitter Sweet, so I kinda was expecting to be back in Dez' perspective, and get more of their romance and see what was next for them. But alas, I quickly started liking Layla. She is more reserved around people, and she has a skewed perception of herself. But she is half-demon and half-gargoyle, she has some characteristics from both and then other things that are uniquely Layla. Bitter Sweet hinted at how much Layla was crushing on Zayne, so I was expecting that, but what I wasn't really prepared for is his protectiveness and their close bond--partly platonic and the other half a tension you could cut with a knife. But like Layla admits to herself, since they grew up with that bond, and since her kiss is deadly and even if there was a work around, Zayne wouldn't keep his good standing with the Wardens. So to me, no matter how sweet, he wasn't a real possibility. But maybe that is because I knew about Roth and didn't want to fall for the underdog. But oh Roth, he was ten kinds of amazing. He was so protective of Layla and so honest, but like Layla, he didn't have a good view of himself and thought that he completely fit into all of the stereotypes. But there was a lot to him and he even surprised himself when he was sweet and considerate to her. The moments between the two were so deliciously full of tension and I loved the ya steam. He is so snarky, I couldn't help but want to kiss him and smack him for some of his dirty jokes and sarcastic humor. Just what I love to read about and it was so well written. Jennifer manages to write these books that make me want more, fall in love with some strong and hot male leads, feel for and connect to the female heroine, laugh out loud and sometimes want to bawl my eyes out. She keeps proving to me that she deserves her spot on my favorite authors shelf and her fast paced ingenious writing that takes a new spin on paranormal and completely trudges a new path. The confidence that he brought out in Layla, and what she discovered about herself in talking to him, crushing on him and trying to convince him that while he may be a demon, that doesn't mean that he is all bad. She saw through to his heart of gold that he'd proved himself, protected her, spent time with her, all the while falling for her that he felt, he had good motives and that the races could work together against the truly corrupt. Layla knew how to defend herself, how to throw a good punch and could hold her own against the weaker demons, and that showed her will to live as well as her inner strength. She could kick some ass of some demons, and bring out the best in others, and once she had the chance could look at and accept that things aren't always what they seem and what she's been taught, but much more complicated. I was so torn in this one because I am the kind of girl who thinks she likes a very black and white when it comes to bad guys and good guys. In this series and in Obsession she really blurs them and everything is gray. They both have bad good guys and supposed bad guys that melt my heart and really surprise me how much they are working for the good, they just have different origins. What she has done with the gargoyles and twisting the demon mythology is so neat and I haven't read anything like it, but the details that she has with the different kinds of demons was really neat and well thought out. I loved the plot twists and so can't wait to see where Jennifer takes the story next. I couldn't and could all at the same time believe the ending. It shocked me but it proved so much about how far one of the characters developed and grew. I will def be continuing this series, I'm in love with a demon and of course am a JLA fan girl. Bottom Line: Hot, exciting and fast paced, left me craving more.

I said a week or so ago that I'm not giving up on Jennifer Armentrout. I love it when I am right. This is why I am reading another one of JLA's stories after the last one absolutely didn't work for me. You can tell she had fun writing this start to a new series. Her paranormal/sci-fi is what I believe she does best. This also why you should never dismiss an author after a one-off book because the next one they write will invariably turn out to be excellent, paranormal, biblioholic crack. The story starts with a young woman named Layla. The reader is slowly introduced to each character and their purpose, be it Wardens, Demons, "Top Side", Heaven and Hell. Distinctly emerging, two very different protectors on opposite sides of an eternal battle.Enter a love interest (or two). Ancient bloodlines, long-planned wars, and even longer-kept secrets. Its all in there and done so well.I loved the parallels to the "Smoke and Bone" series by Laini Taylor -- using religious characters and symbolism without it coming across as a religious story. Just paranormal, fable, folklore, and fantasy.I do wish the characters were a bit more flawed, or interesting, or quirky, something a bit more than someone who could easily be your average neighbor with a fitness addiction. Why do they all have gorgeous hair, eyes, bodies, smiles, etc...? All of them? No clumsy feet. No off-key voices? Dirty laundry or messy room, for Pete's sake. Give me something relate-able... more than gorgeous and perfect.A number of questions were left unanswered. I felt like I was left hanging at the end. Glad to have held off starting this series until I could read the next installment(s)....and read I will.

I have been humming and hawing or whether to read this book or not. I am familiar with this author's books but I was not sure if I was in the mood for a romance story. So glad this book was much more than just a romance story. It had engaging characters and I liked the storyline. Mrs. Armentrout showed that gargoyles can be sexy. However my vote went to the super hottie demon, Roth. Although Zayne is good looking to. Or to quote Layla's friend, Stacey when she described Zayne. She said "Zayne is the awesome sauce with an extra side of sauce". I loved Stacey and her quotes. When she first saw Roth she asked Layla "Where did you pick him up last night, somehwere between the Big Mac and fries". I felt that Roth really dominated in this book. Not that I am complaining as again, he was hot and he and Layla were sizzling together. I just wished that I got to see more of the gargoyles in action. I got my wish but only towards the end of the story for one quick battle scene. I can't wait to read book two and find out what happens to Roth. I don't want a love triangle to happen.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Wonderful story that was fun and fast paced. Jennifer Armentrout has done it again, pretty much everything she writes is golden, and White Hot Kiss is no exception!Opening Sentence: There was a demon in McDonald’s.The Review:Layla has never really fit in. She was raised by wardens who are a race of gargoyles that hunt demons. But Layla is only half warden and her other half is demon. While there are a few wardens that treat her kindly, like Zayne, the boy she grew up with and has been madly in love with ever since she was a little girl. Most of the warden’s fear her and keep her at a distance, and they should since a slight kiss of her lips can suck out their souls. She has fought her demon urges her whole life, but the temptation has only heightened over the years. Soul sucking isn’t Layla’s only talent, she can also sense demons and has the ability to tag them (or in other words make them light up like a Christmas tree, so any warden can easily find them). She has been “tagging” demons ever since she was 13 years old, but she sticks to just lower level demons. But there has been a surge in demon activity lately and Layla runs into a upper level demon. Roth is gorgeous, dangerous, and someone that Layla should steer clear of, but that’s easier said than done. Not to mention the fact that Roth doesn’t have a soul, so kissing him is not dangerous, well at least not to his health. Layla always thought that demons were the enemy and that you can never trust one, but the more time she spends with Roth, the more she starts to question everything she has been taught. Everyone seems to be keeping secrets from her and it turns out that there is a lot more at stake then Layla could ever imagine and she is the key to saving the world.I adored Layla. She has a great personality with lots of spunk and attitude, but she is also a really good person. She has spent her whole life wishing that she could just be a full blooded Warden, it would make things so much easier for her. But I love that even though she has had it rough, she never gives up and even though she will hide her nature from others she always strays true to herself. I just loved Layla and being inside her head was very entertaining.Zayne is such a great guy. He has been like an older brother to Layla even since she came to live with him. He is the only person that has fully accepted her for who she is and doesn’t want her to be anything different. They are best friends and he is the one person Layla can always rely on to be there for her. Of course there is also some serious attraction between the two, but it is impossible for them to ever be together. Zayne is so sweet and I am hopeful that we get to see a lot more of him in the coming books.Roth is your average hot bad boy, well except for the fact that he’s a demon. It’s in his nature to be deceiving and cunning, but Layla seems to pull out the best in him. They have some pretty amazing chemistry and I can see why she had such a hard time resisting him, I would too. He is charming, funny, and did I mention that he is just totally dreamy! I instantly loved Roth and the more I got to know him the more I liked him.In true Jennifer Armentrout fashion, White Hot Kiss is an excellent read. Filled with adventure, hot guys, and a witty protagonist, this is sure to please YA paranormal fans across the board. It is very fast paced and was pretty much impossible to put down. Armentrout does a wonderful job implementing steamy romance, but not overdoing it since this is a young adult novel. I loved the characters and just the whole idea was great. The ending was pretty torturous, so now I am dying to read the next book, but luckily it comes out later this year. One of the things I love most about Armentrout is that she can really write anything and it is amazing. She can do any genre and her works range from YA to Adult, I just think that is impressive and she will forever be one of my favorite authors. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun young adult paranormal story.Notable Scene:He dipped his chin again, looking terribly innocent. “You’ve never been kissed before, have you?”“That’s so not your business.” I folded my arms as Roth waited for an answer. “I think it’s obvious. I can’t kiss anyone. You know, the whole soul-sucking thing makes it difficult.”“Not if you’re kissing someone who doesn’t have a soul.”I made a face. “And why would I kiss someone who doesn’t—”He moved unbelievably fast. I didn’t even have a chance to react. One second he was standing a good three feet away from me and the next his hands were gently clasping my cheeks. There was an instant when I wondered how something so strong and deadly could hold anything so carefully, but then he tilted my head back and lowered his own. My heart rate kicked into hyperdrive. He wasn’t going to kiss me. No way—Roth kissed me.FTC Advisory: Harlequin Teen provided me with a copy of White Hot Kiss. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

This was my first book by Jennifer L. Armentrout and I have to say I'm really confused right now.I mean, I likes it. A lot. I finished it in a couple of midnight hours. I liked the story (I'm a sucker for paranormal most of the time), I liked the plot, the way she used the different creatures in her story... It was a nice read I didn't want to finish. And there's Roth, who is ma' cup o'tea any day of the year. Roth was probably THE reason I finished this book so fast.Still, there's something nagging me in the head. I think this would be a better book if Armentrout had taken a little more time (and pages) to explore the story. It is the first book in The Dark Elements trilogy, but I like it when my first book leave me with the feeling of a fantastic new door opened in front of me, waiting for me to cross into this new dimension. WHK didn't do that, but it didn't make me want to run away. It's more like an in-between: I want to know more, but I don't need the information now, nor will I suffer if I don't have it.I felt like some characters didn't match their said personalities, too many parts of important stuff got minimal descriptions while the kisses could have 4 paragraphs... Small details that trigger pet-peeves.However, I DID like the book (hence the 4 starts). I just think it could have been much better (or maybe my expectations where to high, seeing as this author is adored by so many people).

I have no clue why, but it has taken me forever to get into this one. I seriously have picked this up around six times and did not get past the first few pages before putting it down. I finally started it and ended up flying through this. Was this my favorite JLA? No, but I still enjoyed it for what it was. I really liked the story the more it went on. I was expecting more New Adult, but did not realize this is definitely Young Adult. At times I was loving the story and others I was bored.Overall, this was ok. I am not really sure if I will continue on or not.

Was okay. It did not really gain my attention fully. The idea of the story is interesting, but the development but the plot wasn't to my taste.
