About this audiobook

November 2009. An emaciated young lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, is led to a freezing isolation cell in a Moscow prison, handcuffed to a bed rail, and beaten to death by eight police officers. His crime? To testify against the Russian Interior Ministry officials who were involved in a conspiracy to steal $230 million of taxes paid to the state by one of the world's most successful hedge funds. Magnitsky's brutal killing has remained uninvestigated and unpunished to this day. His farcical posthumous show-trial brought Putin's regime to a new low in the eyes of the international community. Red Notice is a searing exposE of the wholesale whitewash by Russian authorities of Magnitsky's imprisonment and murder, slicing deep into the shadowy heart of the Kremlin to uncover its sordid truths. Bill Browder - the hedge fund manager who employed Magnitsky - takes us on his explosive journey from the heady world of finance in New York and London in the 1990s, through his battles with ruthless oligarchs in the turbulent landscape of post-Soviet Union Moscow, to his expulsion from Russia on Putin's orders. Browder's graphic portrait of the Russian government as a criminal enterprise wielding all the power of a sovereign state illuminates his personal transformation from financier to human rights activist, campaigning for justice for his late lawyer and friend. With fraud, bribery, corruption and torture exposed at every turn,Red Notice is a shocking but true political roller-coaster that plays out in the highest echelons of Western power.

Editor's Note

Real-life heroism…

Written like a gripping thriller novel, Browder’s account of exposing deep corruption in Russia and his unfailing will to fight against Putin’s regime proves that sometimes fact is far stranger than fiction.

Well read, this novel is a true eye-opener. Let's hope Bill Browder lives to a nice old age and dies of natural causes. Bill's a very patriotic man and loyal to his causes. This novel reveals a lot about both Russia and America and how their systems function. Brilliant true story. Well worth reading/listening to.

The last half of the story. The history of his business in Russia was interesting but I began to think where is this going and do I care. It is difficult to muster sympathy for a hedge fund having problems but then the mystery of why comes in. I struggled to understand the complicated deceptive transactions that were going on behind the scenes by the police but the results changed the focus and the lives of families and the brave individuals who exposed it.

I wish at least as many people were interested in the struggle between good and evil in our world as "in a galaxy far far away"! This superbly written book obviously helps to open eyes, hearts and souls.
As a citizen of a country led back to dark dictatorial times by a mini putin, I'm utterly worried about my nation's future.
People like Sergei and Bill and their friends give hope that there is still light at the end of the long, long tunnel.

This was an excellent book. It is a shame that Mr. Browder has to watch his back for the rest of his life.

Before this book I completely ignored the Magnitsky Act and the incredible story behind it. Bill Browder’s ability of bringing facts to life and giving them their historical context is incredible and it speaks both to your mind and to your heart. Today, the fact that many of the counter stories and allegations fabricated to dismantle the accusations behind the Magnitsky Act simply failed, is for me a strong enough evidence that the facts described in this story are true. This story needs to be spread, because we may all one day be Sergej Magnitskij.

Brilliant! Filled with a deep sense of purpose. One mans quest for self fulfillment through the treacherous world of global markets, transitions into trying to save the life of an innocent man as he is brutally tortured under the communist rule of Putin.

This was a fantastic exposé of how corrupt Putin’s Russia is. Sadly, it took the murder of courageous whistleblower Serge Magnitsky to help reveal Putin’s evil. Bravo Bill Bowder! And bravo to narrator Adam Grupper for his wonderful use of accents and expression that made a compelling account even more compelling!

An intensely interesting and instructive description of the continuing crime and despotism in Putin's Russia. The author is a true fighter for freedom. He is, however, in danger from retribution by Putin. Thus, it is encumbant upon all who care, to read this book and learn of one man's fight against the Russian oligarchs, and the biggest liar and criminal, Putin.

This is reality, this is how Russia operates; ruthlessly and with total disregard of the law of the land or human lives. It is a mafia state ran by a dictator. Putyin in 2022 attacked and destroying Ukraine a sovereign nation while threatening the world with his nuclear arsenal. This is eerily similar to 1939 when Hitler overtook Czechoslovakia and he said he wouldn’t go further. So when mr. Putyin will overtake Moldova or Romania etc. he will keep on waiving the nuclear threat to the world. When will it end? When the world will unite against his tyranny and stop showing weakness because the only one thing a tug like Putyin understand is brute force.

An absolutely heart-wrenching personal account of the corruption and thuggery of Russia, which extends all the way to the top. If this book doesn’t terrify you about the lawlessness of Russia at home and abroad, then I doubt you understand the situation. This is a must read for anyone with any interest in international affairs.

If it were written as a novel, this book would be classified as too far fetched. The fact that this is a true story is just incredible. Those Russians, policemen and public servants ruin so many lives so that they can wallow in the money they have stolen: there really isn't a word to describe such people.

Putin looms large in this book and in the end, without justifying anything he says or does, has to be on the receiving end of so many lies from his minions. Putin cannot be fully informed and behave the way he does. Unless, of course, he is a mad and evil bastard.

    The reading was excellent, too.
