- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The time is 1905, in the fast growing, prosperous town of Blessing, North Dakota. Miriam Hastings finds herself in Blessing, to work as a nurse in a very small and primitive hospital. It is an honor and great opportunity to further her skills. She is torn between staying in Chicago with her family, a sick widowed mother, and younger siblings and going. Her family is very poor and she decides this training will benefit them financially. She is surprised and delighted at the closeness of the community, not only to each other but to God. At the center of the community is the Bjorklund family, immigrants from Norway. When Trygve Bjorklund meets the nurses at the station to escort them to living quarters, he is immediately drawn to Miriam, and wants to pursue a relationship. Miriam on the other hand wants to get her training and get home to her family. Romance is the last thing on her mind. Trygve doesn’t give up, and his character and strong faith gradually draw her to him.The story drew me into the residents of the town, especially the personal lives of the Bjorklunds. Their trust in the Lord, high standards, and meek spirits drew me to them. I loved being a part of their daily existence. It gave me a warm happy feeling. The characters and story weren’t saccharinely sweet or fake. They were very real and I was encouraged by their constant reliance on the Lord.As peaceful as the town is, there was lots of excitement. Losses, deaths, robberies, and even more challenges. The author follows the characters in detail in how they turn to God not matter what they face. Miriam not only learns a lesson in what true commitment is, but also who Christ is. She also discovers that life has a way of changing our plans. I wish the town of was a real place! I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s descriptions and challenges in practicing medicine, not only in that era but also in such a small town. Reliance on the Lord for healing was as much a part of being a doctor or a nurse, as the knowledge, tools and medicine.I would definitely go visit. The book was so great and made me feel such a part of it, I was disappointed when it ended and missed the people! A well written, engaging book!I received this book free from the publisher from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a wonderfully written story with many ups and downs in it. Faith is woven through it all.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This series seems to be centering around Trygve Knutson, son of Lars and Kaaren Knutson (which are part of the original settlers to Blessing, North Dakota). Trygve is "love struck" upon meeting one of the student nurses who arrived off the train at Blessing, a Miss Miriam Hastings. Miriam is in Blessing as part of becoming an accredited nurse and then returning home to her ailing mother and her siblings in Chicago. Miriam will discover the beauty of Blessing, and what it is like to begin to fall in love. But this story is not without its tragedy (get your Kleenex handy, especially if you have followed these folks from the beginning). I always enjoy my stay in the Red River Valley and visiting with the growing town and the wonderful people who founded this place.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To Everything A Season is part of the Bjorklund family saga that is covered in five series of stories. All of these are historical fiction with some romance included in many of the tales. The Song of Blessing series is the fifth Bjorklund family series. I like to think of it as a two-in-one series because it wraps up the previous series' loose ends as well as begins a new series about the Bjorklunds in Blessing, North Dakota. It is able to stand on its own, although I think it would be appreciated best if read along with its predecessors. This book came out in 2014 and the second book in the new series, A Harvest of Hope, has just been released (2015). This book is a springboard for the next book which will be more about Trygve and Miriam. The main theme in this book is about community and about the ones who make this community special. Since this is a series that continues the Bjorklund saga, attention is focused on an elderly couple whose legacy includes the community of Blessing, populated by Ingaborg and Haakan's large family and their friends. There are numerous subplots and threads because the community is growing by leaps and bounds. One of the unusual things about this thriving North Dakota village is its hospital. There were not many hospitals available in remote areas in the early 1900's. This one is very new and run by two female doctors, Dr. Ingrid Bjorklund Jeffers and Dr. Elizabeth Bjorklund, the senior Bjorklund's daughter and daughter-in-law. Dr. Elizabeth was trained in Chicago and returned to open this one in her remote town mostly supported by the Chicago parent hospital. Much of the action in this story centers around the doctors, patients and the burgeoning community. In one of the subplots, the Chicago hospital has sent three nurses-in-training out to the Blessing hospital for a year of hands-on experience. One of Ingaborg's nephews, Trygve Knutson, became smitten with one of the nurses, Miriam Hastings. Their relationship blossomed quickly until an event at the hospital contributed to a misunderstanding between them. The books ends with a cliff-hanger and the realization that their story would continue in another book. One of the things that stands out most to me is how well the author built a community to which I became attached quickly. As I read the story, there were many hints of a back story that sounded intriguing and which engendered a desire to look up all the former books of the series and read them. I also sensed a closure to an era of Bjorklunds that centered around one couple, one family, and the beginning of a new era fitting for a new community filled with young families with new challenges to face. There's the aura of a passing of the baton. It draws me in, anticipating the new series. With great character development, a sense of community to love, a bright future ahead, living and breathing faith that transcends mere words, this is a series and book I highly recommend to you. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To Everything a Season by Lauraine Snelling is the first book in the Song of Blessing series. I have been reading Lauraine Snelling’s book since An Untamed Land when we are introduced to Ingeborg and Kaaren. To Everything a Season continues the story and introduces as to new characters as well. It is 1905 and things are booming in Blessing, North Dakota. People are arriving in town faster than they can build housing. They are adding an addition onto the boarding house, creating an apartment building, and building houses. The hospital is doing well under the care of the Dr.’s Bjorklund (Astrid and Elizabeth). They are getting some student nurses from Chicago as well as ladies to train in nursing from the Indian reservation.Miriam Hastings is one of the student nurses being sent to Blessing. She wants to go, but she is reluctant to leave her family. Her mother is ill and she has four siblings under the age of 16. Any extra money Miriam earns goes straight to her family to help them pay rent and get food to eat. But Miriam has signed a contract and she needs to honor it. Miriam finds that life in Blessing is very different from Chicago (especially in the tenements). There is fresh air, good and plentiful food, airy housing, and lots of fresh vegetables. Miriam also enjoys the community and how everyone is treated like family.Trygve Knutson (Kaaren’s son) is immediately attracted to Miriam and set out to get to know her better. Miriam is afraid to get too close because she has a commitment to return to Chicago to finish her nursing education and to her family. We also get to see how Ingeborg and her family are doing, Kaaren, Grace, Sophie, Penny, and all the others. You will need your hankie while reading the last of the book. I do not wish to give away any spoilers, but it is sad and, if you are like me, you will be crying. I give To Everything a Season 5 out of 5 stars. I am a big fan of Lauraine Snelling’s books and To Everything a Season was a delightful addition. I enjoyed returning to Blessing and revisiting all the wonderful people that live in this town.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/55 stars ***** out of fiveHistorical FictionYou know how, when you have personally met an author who is so very loveable as Lauraine Snelling is, you form a relationship with her and her novels? Well, I did and do. And you know what? When I read about Blessing, I hear Lauraine talking. When I read her blog, it is Ingeborg and her family speaking to me. This is the first book of a new series, Song of Blessing, but it continues the story of Ingeborg and Kaaren and their families. It takes the reader back to the time when hard work, hard play and devout faith was all that kept immigrants and homesteaders from giving up. When life was connected closely to family, friends, the weather and God. Just as in real life, things happened to sideline dreams. I admit that I first started reading the books because they told of life on the Red River, where my ancestors lives and farmed, though they were North of the border. I continue reading because I want to know what will happen next and what exciting thing will come to their little piece of Heaven. Thank you to Fred and Cheri at The Book Club Network, the author Lauraine Snelling and Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group for the opportunity to read this novel. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions are my own
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A glimpse at what life was like in Blessing ND in 1905, where life was simple, and air was clean. People were very hard working, and it seemed that neighbors were there whenever there was a need. This is a predominately Norwegian community, and most have immigrated, and are helping others to come over, to where they can own land.We have a young man, Trygve Knutson, who has decided he is tired of traveling and come what may he wants to stay in one place, and that is Blessing. I loved the interaction he has with his Ante and Uncle, and would love to be in that family. Then we have a nursing student from Chicago who is being requested to go to Blessing to finish up her training. She is so torn, her father has died and her mother is very ill. She wants to be in two places at once, but her heart tells her that her family needs her. Her younger siblings were working, and helping bring in their meager earnings. The town of Blessing is expanding so much that they are running out of housing. With the expansion, there are a lot of new people and nationalities that end up there. Was really surprised, and yet shouldn’t have been, how some of the natives of the town didn’t support anyone else to have a freedom of religion. Will Miriam be able to come and take training? Will Trygve be able to leave the traveling job, when he is offered twice his salary to stay? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered beneath the covers of this great book.I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I just finished another great book by Lauraine Snelling. I have read several books in her Blessing series and loved learning what had happened to the characters in her previous books. This book is one that can be read by itself, but after reading, you will want to go back and read other book to see the progression of the characters. The town of Blessing, North Dakota was founded by many Norwegian immigrants and is growing by leaps and bounds. The town is increasing as quickly as it can and this book revolves around the growing of the town as well as the hospital that is in the town. It shows how the town comes together to help out in many situations and how families help each other out.I received this book free to review from the publisher.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A book of the seasons of life from beginning to end. A book of encouragement but also questions we ask God. The start of a hospital in Blessing. Nurses brought to town to train at hospital.Family life, the life of a rural town, and differences of beliefs. So many times I ask a question of God and found same question by someone in this book.A struggle with faith so many can relate to. I know some are seeking more than romance. This book offers much more. Their are babies born, difficulties, life happenings, and yes, even death. Have tissues ready near end.I highly recommend this book. It will leave you waiting for the next one.
