- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There are secrets and dramas happening even in the places you wouldn't expect it. I was pretty interested in the goings on with the girls. This book is fairly short and only the beginning. I'd like to read the next book at some point to find out what happens.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it! Couldn't put it down. My heart went out to the girls. Started on the second book right after I finnished book 1 - I needed to know how the girls were coping. I felt as though I was with them on their farm and at one with their grief.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I lvoed the book. It was so interesting reading about Amish customs and lifestyle. The book capivated my attention and it was hard to put down. The characters came to life and so did thir feelings. It was very well written. I will read more ov Beverly Lewis books because I enjoyed this one so much
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A simple book about four sisters growing up in a Amish family and what happens when the older sister steps outside the rules of her Amish faith.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I picked this book up at a thrift store because i thought it looked interesting. It sat on my book shelf for almost a year, until I started going through my books looking for something good to read. By the time i got through the first few pages, I was hooked. I read this book nonstop when i had the chance, and finished it in just over a day. The drama that occurs in this book is very taboo, which makes it an even better read. I live in Pennsylvania and have always interacted with Amish. I am fascinated by their lifestyle, and Beverly Lewis gave me a chance to understand some of how Amish live on a daily basis. After I finished The Covenant, I ran to the nearest bookstore and bought the next book in the series, which is The Betrayal. That is how it was every other night or so when I would finish the next book, I would be so deeply into the lives of these characters that I simply couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The Covenant is easily nbhone of the best books that I have ever read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is outside the realm of the types of books I usually read, but it is a very good book, nonetheless! It transports me into a world and belief system very different from my own, which is very relaxing. While this book has quite a bit of spirituality blended in, it is mainly a story about love and family.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Leah has always been the son that Abram and Ida Ebersol never had. She has always helped her father with running the farm and caring for the livestock. But as she nears 16, she will be allowed to attend social gatherings with the other young members of her Amish community and she begins to yearn for more than farming duties. Sadie is the eldest Ebersol daughter and is already socializing with the boys, perhaps more than she should. But when Sadie begins meeting a young man in the woods, whose identity and existence is kept a secret from her family, she may be in danger of loosing her heart and her home. As Sadie continues along her dangerous path, Leah is discovering hers...but neither of them expects the path to be so rocky and winding. This is book 1 of the Abraham’s Daughters series. It was very good and I am about to pick up book 2 of 5. It will be interesting to see what is in store for the five Ebersol daughters.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Beverly Lewis does not disappoint with this first installment in the Abram's Daughters series. Although it is similar to other writers of this type of Christian fiction, Beverly Lewis' books are just a cut above the rest. I enjoyed this book as well as the rest of the series very much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good book! Leaves you wanting more, will be reading the rest of the series soon!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I thought this book was well written. Reading about an Amish Family (A very Traditional one at that) was interesting. Learning a little about their lives and what they do is sort of neat.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Though deeply religious and acting in accordance with their faith, the Amish aren’t immune to the failings of all people. Keeping secrets, giving into temptations, lying, and more creep into Amish life. The first book of this series sets up some pretty awful happenings. The writing is quite good, and characters and plot develop at a good pace. The ending will lead you right into the next installment, so be sure you have it handy, because you won’t want to stop with the first novel.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was not aware of the Amish fiction genre until I kept seeing these books at the library with women with bonnets on the cover. I decided to give one a try. I liked it more than I thought I would, maybe even enough to read the next in the series. It was nice to read a book that was so linear and straightforward and just told a story where nothing was too complicated.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very entertaining and gripping read, also a very quick read despite its size.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The remains of an extraterrestrial are found in the Negev Desert in Israel by an archeologist, Lucy Morgan, who is abducted. Lucy's mother enlists the help of Ethan Warner to find her. At the same time, two detectives in Washington DC stuble upon mysterious deaths in an abandoned building that, at first glance, all appear to be accidental overdose but show signs of hypothermia. As the plot thickens, Lucy's abduction and the victims in Washington are all point to a well-known and politically influential minister of New Covenant Church in Washington DC.What of the remains of the extraterrestrial? What is the connection between the deaths in Washington and Lucy's abduction to it? And what does this famous, successful pastor have to do with it all?I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is an interesting plot with some good action. On the other hand, the author seems to go on a soapbox with a chip on his choulder against religion (presumably Christianlity foremost). This resentment shows through his writing and deflects from the story itself. My advice? If you resent Christianity, you might want to read this book and find it entertaining.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Newly released today is Dean Crawford's debut novel Covenant.Archaeologist Lucy Morgan is on a sanctioned dig in Israel. But it is what she discovers on her own time nearby that is unbelievable."The remains bore testimony to an enormously powerful creature, the internment a cavity over eight feet long....Ahmed looked at the bones, confused now by the unfamiliar terminology and the doctor's excitement. 'What's so special about it ?' A ghost of a smile touched Lucy's lips. "It's not human'."But before Lucy can share her discovery with the world, she is abducted. When her family is unable to get assistance from either the American or Israeli government, they turn to former marine and war correspondent Ethan Warner for help. As Warner and Lucy's mother Rachel search, they find a conspiracy deeper than anyone could have imagined - governments, church, military and many unsavoury individuals - all with their own agendas.Covenant's first five or six chapters introduce us to all the players - and there are quite a few. I did find I had to refer back to some of the opening chapters in order to keep everyone straight for the first bit. Protagonist Ethan Warner is an interesting character who is still fighting demons from his own past. I was glad to see that Crawford did not make him omnipotent - able to figure out every puzzle right away or fight his way out of every situation. It allowed him to be both believable and likable. But I think my favourite character was actually Lopez, one of the DC cops who stumble onto the collusion. I was glad to see she will be brought back along with Warner in the next book of this planned series. As for the plot - in some ways it seems a bit far fetched - a take on Area 51. But Crawford had me running to my computer many times to check out the science and historical references he makes in the book. And you know, they're out there and documented. Enough to really get you thinking and wondering. I thought it was an inventive, ambitious storyline. There are many twists and turns on the way to the final page. For those who love mysteries, history, conspiracies and adventure, Covenant has it all. Recommended for fans of James Rollins and Michael Crichton. On his blog, Dean Crawford describes himself as "A thriller writer with a good chance (I think) of success." I think so too Dean!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This entertaining thriller has a sci-fi slant to it which I liked. What? Extraterrestrials visiting the Earth in ancient days? Who'd have thunk it? There's a mad scientist, a rough punching hero, an evil mercenary organization and a fundamentalist church all whipped up into frenzy mode in a fast paced narrative. Fun.
