About this audiobook

'Where have you been all our lives, Mindy?' Glamour

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: comedienne, actress, obedient child of immigrant professionals and, now, writer. With a blend of witty confessions and unscientific observations, Mindy writes about everything from being a timid young chubster afraid of her own bike to living the Hollywood life, dating, friendships and planning her own funeral - all executed with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls.

I've never been a big watcher of "The Office," but the episodes I've seen didn't make me a huge fan of Kelly Kapoor. I know it's stupid to assume that a character is similar to the actor playing them…but I do. I think most people do, honestly - who doesn't automatically think Michael Richards is Kramer? But I digress. The only books that have held my attention lately are humorous essay collections and memoirs, so when I saw Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, I decided to give it a chance. I'd previously flipped through the book in bookstores and chuckled at the table of contents, but that was the extent of it.

Now, though. Now I am in love with this woman. We need to be best friends. It started when the book opened with her joking about her weight and love of diets. I love when women are up front about not being anorexic, because 'fessing up to that is something I have trouble with, for no good reason. As Mindy goes through her life, I learned that she used to write sketches for Saturday Night Live characters with her friends, or go through an event pretending to be someone else or a random made-up character. So many chapters made me think "I did that, too!" and feel pleased with myself.

Towards the end of the book, she reveals that she is a size 8. Not to get all size Nazi, but I was furious. She spent a whole book saying she was a big girl but happy with it, and she's a size eight? I understand you're dealing with skinny ladies in showbiz, but come on!

Then I read the next page and was in love with her again. So much made me laugh. A truly fabulous book.

This was a very enjoyable book, full of stories of Mindy's childhood, and early professional life. It was fun to read and I can't wait to read her next book.

My daughter asked me to pick this book up for her at the library. While I had it, I decided I would read it. I really did not know who Mindy Kaling was before I started this book, yes, I am old.

This book felt like I was sitting with my daughter and her friends talking about their lives, or as another reviewer said, it felt like sitting in an LA coffee shop and chatting with Mindy for a few hours, hearing a bunch of funny anecdotes, and getting to know her a little better.

I read this book in a few hours and it let me know what this group of writers and actors went through. I really must watch "The Office" and perhaps The Mindy Project. It is funny that as I read these memoirs from this 30 something group, they all seem to have grown up with the same problems and issues and become comedy writers. Interesting.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is a collection of humorous essays from comedian/actor/writer/director and sometimes producer Mindy Kaling, most famous for her work on The Office and, more recently, her own show The Mindy Project.

I will admit that I have never actually watched The Mindy Project and only made it through about 20 minutes of an episode of The Office before turning it off. I literally cannot watch situational humor; I'm not misusing the word literally, either. Whenever a character enters an embarrassing situation, I am compelled to cover my ears and close my eyes and hum until it's over. (As an interesting note, this is apparently genetic - my brother and father to do the same thing, something I did not find out until I was 20). Unfortunately, much of Mindy Kaling's humor seems to be in line with this, as evident by the fact that Will Ferrell makes three of her top funniest moments.

So why did I pick up this book? I've seen several .gifs of the Mindy Project and thought they were funny, and in interviews, Mindy Kaling seemed admirable.

Unfortunately, I just didn't find this book funny. It wasn't bad, but it only managed to make me really crack a smile once during the entire thing. Most of it was somewhat humorous, but nothing laugh-out-loud. This is fine when you're writing a fiction book, but less so when you're writing a collection of comedic essays.

I added that caveat at the beginning because it may be that I just don't get her humor, and fans of her show and work on The Office will be rolling in the aisles, but it seems to me that the problem was a perennial one: most comedians just cannot make the jump between visual, face-to-face humor and prose. Ellen DeGeneres, whom I adore, wrote a book similar to this one, and I felt the same. It was random and disjointed. Kaling at least makes the attempt to give her essays some kind of linear progression, but it just never quite coalesced.

Overall, the parts that were the funniest were her asides, the actual writing itself, and her experiences during childhood. The first half of the book was actually fairly engaging, but then it just petered out toward the end, when it should have been getting more interesting.

For fans, you might check it out. If you're only passingly familiar with Kaling and thought you'd give it a try, however, I would skip it.

I want to be Mindy Kaling’s bff. She writes like I imagine she lives her everyday life. Loved her on The Office and The Mindy Projecf.

I didn't finish this one. I love Mindy Kaling and she is hilarious but this book was a tad too slow for me.

Not quite a memoir but also not quite a collection of essays, this feels a bit like delving into Mindy's brain into a curated tour of the bits she thinks are funniest or most interesting. It's entertaining and if you're a fan of hers, you'll enjoy it but not a must-read.

Hilarious. I wish it had been twice as long. Mindy's high school experience - of freskishly close female friendships, and telling ghost stories or learning dance routines together rather than dating (or even talking to) boys - is so similar to my own, I was like, "Wait, did I know her in high school?" It's great to see a classy broad like this take the comedy world by storm.

Kahling's comedic voice shines in this memoir, which reads like a conversation between girlfriends.

I picked this one up at the library on a whim, because I remembered that someone else in the group had read it and said it wasn't half bad. I agree, it's not half bad, and for a "celebrity memoir", I'm sure it could have been much worse.Half the book is written in memoir style, and the other half is written more as general commentary on various random things (life, love, showbiz, fashion, etc.). The chapters alternate in their focus, making the whole thing seem a little bit disorganized, but the linear storytelling of the memoir portions help to bring the book together as a cohesive whole.I greatly preferred the memoir chapters, if only because I found Kaling's story of growing up (as a super awkward child with a tight-knit family) highly relatable, and the tale of how she ended up as a writer/actor/producer/director on The Office quite inspiring -- the whole thing came out of a series of failures, minor successes, subsequent setbacks, and a drive to keep pushing forward despite the times she failed. She seems like a very driven woman, sure of what she wants in life -- full of spunk, spice, and determination. It wasn't great, but it was a good read for the sake of curiosity. After all, everyone has a story to tell, and Kaling's is just as interesting as anyone else's.

I love Mindy Kaling after reading this book! She is so smart and funny. She even went to Dartmouth "to study white people in North Face jackets." The book won't be a life changer but I'm so glad I read it and it made me laugh. I will look forward to Mindy's next book and other works from her in the near future.

As a HUGE fan of The Office, I was super excited to read this book. I already had the eBook when I saw that Mindy Kaling had actually narrated the audiobook version herself. (so cool! Lol) Anyway, it was exactly what I had expected it to be. Super funny and honest-feeling. It was also smart with some awesome references!

Was slightly disappointed. I love love love The Office and was expecting something along the lines of Chelsea Handler's memoirs, yet it didn't compare. No laugh out loud moments, and it was boring at times. Still enjoyed it to an extent, and liked hearing about her life outside of The Office as a normal, everyday human.

For someone as talented and funny as Mindy is on the office, I have no idea how this book got published. about 1 % of this book is funny, the rest is who cares. This is a total chick lite book, but because it is not really a story, it becomes a really really long and boring story about Mindy. I don't know what it is about women in comedy who go on to write books, but other than Chelsea Handlers 1st book they all are boring, and not funny. Find a story in a magazine like People about Mindy Kaling and read that, but skip this book.

I liked this book, but I wasn't crazy about it. It was recommended to me by friends and I think not being familiar with Mindy Kaling really hurt my chances at liking this book. It was short and if you're a fan of her work then it might be a good book for people who don't typically read, but it was just ok. I'm now curious to watch her show, but she just isn't my cup of tea. -Audio

With this book, Mindy Kaling writes a humorous memoir, which reads more like episodic little essays than a life story. Kaling talks a bit about her upbringing and her early career missteps and successes, but she also rambles on such inane topics as why men should have chest hair, dating a "boy" versus dating a "man," what she does and doesn't want to happen at her funeral, and various nomenclature for calling a person fat, including the various connotations of these. Humor is a tricky thing, and one person's funny is not always another. To be fair, I don't really follow Kaling's projects, so I didn't know her humor particularly well going into this book. Some parts of the book definitely made me chuckle, but other bits didn't -- especially because it seems Kaling and I have different worldviews, particularly concerning traditional gender roles. So I couldn't always relate - or find funny - her idle observations on watching and loving "chick flicks," how men should always allow all women to enter an elevator first in order to be "chivalrous," and the "fun" of getting a mani-pedi before a second date with a guy. She also complains about being "fat" in Hollywood, without really 100% criticizing a system that allows a woman who wears a size 8 (below the national average of 12-14) to be considered overweight. On the other hand, I was very glad to have read this book as an audiobook, with Kaling as the reader (with a couple of guest voices interspersed). Hearing her read her own words made everything seem more open and raw, so it felt very authentic and personal, even when I couldn't agree with her or find something particularly amusing.Even though the book isn't that old, it actually feels a bit dated in places already, like when Kaling muses about how great an all-female Ghostbusters movie would be (check) and effuses on how great Amy Poehler and Will Arnett's marriage is (now divorced). The Office was still on the air, and The Mindy Project had not yet aired. To sum up, I definitely found the book entertaining enough to elicit some smiles and chuckles while I listened along, although I also found myself occasionally shaking my head 'no' to some of her comments (like how "glamorous" a life the children of divorced parents have). I enjoyed the book enough for the light and funny break I needed from my darker and sometimes duller previous audiobook reads. But I'm not sure that I liked it enough to want to read her second book.

Quick funny read. I love that she shared stories of how to got into the television business and stories about working on The Office. If you enjoy her sense of humor on The Office or The Mindy Project then I'm sure you'll enjoy this book as well!

This was a fantastic audiobook! I never realized just how funny Mindy actually is, nor did I realize just how much she has contributed to the entertainment world. This is a short listen that does contain a few f-bombs. If you have the time I would recommend this via audiobook. I promise you will laugh for the majority of the time!

One of the worst books I've read in a while. It started out OK with stories about Mindy's childhood and work. That part was fine, although not particularly funny. Once she finished telling us about working on The Office she ran out of things to say and the book devolved into her random, unfunny, sometimes sightly offensive musings. Her story about the woman who ran the cupcake store offering her free cupcakes if she would tweet about how much she liked them turned into a rant about how she had plenty of money to buy $2 cupcakes and it was insulting that the woman would even notice she was in there frequently. Her description of how men should dress included telling men that they should buy new Chuck Taylors every year because they are "only $40 and if you can't afford them you have bigger problems and shouldn't be reading this book." Wow Mindy.

Here's another deep, dark confession of mine (to accompany the one in my review of Life Itself): I don't watch The Office. I'm not really much into the humor of the show, or maybe I've never really given it a chance. I've only watched bits and pieces of random episodes here and there. But when I saw that Mindy Kaling had a book coming out, I knew I had to read it. Because how many Asians (India is part of Asia! Crazy, isn't it?) do you know that go into something offbeat like comedy and acting (it's definitely not being a doctor or engineer!) - and become successful at it?!The inevitable comparisons will be to Tina Fey's Bossypants but I don't think that's quite fair. This book kind of has me split. There were great parts and then there were parts that underwhelmed me. The stories about her childhood, growing up, her jobs, and working at The Office were really good. There were a couple of laugh-out-loud moments for me. But where the book lost me was in the "fluff" pieces, so-called by other reviewers here - for example, some of the pieces in the Romance and Guys section read like blog posts and I don't think they really added anything to the book.Overall, this was a super-fast, fun read, and great for a few laughs.

I loved "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and other concerns). i found this book hilarious and entertaining. Half the book is written in memoir style and the other half is mostly conversation and Kaling's thoughts. Kaling is funny and smart and uses it to her advantage in real life and her imaginary one. She doesn't hold back on laughing at herself and others which makes her even better. Her chapter on religion is the best. I see her as the next Sam Bee not Tina Fey.
