      The Bailey Ruth ghost series by Carolyn Hart is consistently delightful and funny. This time Bailey Ruth is dispatched to Adelaide, OK to inspire a single mother stuck with a bad case of writer's block and ends up defending her against murder charges.

      Bailey Ruth Raeburn is sent by Mr. Wiggins (head of Heaven’s Department of Good Intentions) to help Deirdre Davenport, divorced mother of two and struggling writer, overcome writer’s block. It seems like a pretty easy assignment and Mr. Wiggins expects her back on the next Rescue Express train. But that is not to be. While Bailey Ruth is just getting to know Deirdre, her young charge is suspected of murder. It seems that Deirdre is hoping to be selected as a new faculty member at Goddard College. The person who will be making the faculty appointment is Jay Knox and he’s interested in more than Deirdre’s writing style. Then he winds up dead at a writers’ conference Deirdre is attending. All this is happening in Adelaide, Oklahoma, Bailey Ruth’s old stomping grounds. Back when she was a live, that is. And our heroine has been back to Adelaide before on her missions from heaven – and she has gotten to know and like the local police chief. So Bailey Ruth commences investigating the murder and disobeying all of Mr. Wiggin’s rules for emissaries.Although I enjoyed this story – it’s lighthearted fun – I’m thinking that these stories are getting to be rather formulaic. That is one of the dangers of creating a series character who can’t really change. She’s dead, and isn’t about to evolve very much from what she is. So what can she do except magically change clothes, appear and disappear, move about in a heavenly way? And she can’t have a love interest (although she CAN flirt) because she has her hunky husband waiting for her back in heaven. Don’t get me wrong, I will read any future books in this series, but I have a feeling I won’t enjoy them nearly as much as I did in the early days when the magic was still there.
