This is a well-written story, although it had the feeling of a short story - of which I'm less fond. It's clearly meant as an introduction to the main characters, to be read first before the rest of the series. I'm intrigued enough to read/listen to the next book in the series. I particularly liked the handling of the main character's daughter - the insight in how she defines herself.

Not wanting to dive into anything too time consuming, I picked up a few novellas to get in some short and light reads in before the new year. I am not one for short stories so when I pick one up I don’t go in with high expectations.

Wow! I believe I’ve found a new favorite here. They hooked me from the beginning and for being such a short story, it packed a huge punch. The story was full and substantial with writing that flowed so well that I looked up other titles by this author to add to my already too long “to read” list.

After a tragic accident and waking from a coma, Eloise Montgomery is left to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. In the midst of it all, she discovers she has a gift. An unwelcome gift. Eloise soon realizes its importance and embraces this newfound gift in order to help others and helping herself cope with her own loss.

Oh this book is short but freaking amazing!!

After a tragedy Eloise’s life takes another turn no one could see coming.

This story is equal parts fascinating and creepy. I love that I could feel the anxiety Eloise was feeling, and that I was able to visualize every part of this story as it was being read to me!

A hugeeeeee shoutout to January LaVoy (though I doubt she’ll ever see this ?)- she is phenomenal and I could listen to her read to me all day.

This was my first exposure to anything having to do with The Hollows series and, honestly, I still have no idea what the series is about. But I enjoyed this short story. It's hard to get a reader to care about characters in a short, but I thought Unger did a great job of it. I'm also interested enough to go find out what the rest of the series is about.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for hooking me up!

The Whispers by Lisa Unger is the first book in the trilogy. Life is good for the Montgomery family. Eloise is a stay-at-home mom. She is married to Alife and they have two daughters: Emily and Amanda. Eloise is driving Alfie to work and the girls to school when a semi hits their car. Only Eloise and Amanda survive the car crash. After the crash Eloise starts having visions of girls who are lost, murdered, or hurt. Eloise feels compelled to help these girls in her visions and contacts Ray Muldune a police detective in The Hollows. This is just the beginning for Eloise and her new life filled with psychic visions (and voices). It is a great story and you just want to keep reading to see what is going to happen next. This is a short story and ends a little abruptly. However, there are two more books in this series.I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley/Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Read on November 05, 2014 — I own a copyA really great tale wrapped up in a tidy 66 pages. Surprisingly, although this is a SUPER short story, it didn't seemed rushed and the elements of a books structure were all there to enjoy. The beginning of The Whispers grabbed my attention and the ending gave me goose bumps. This is my first introduction to Lisa Unger and I'm pleasantly surprised. Lately, I've been trying to step out of my genre comfort zone, expand my horizons a bit. Unger's short story is a great combination of paranormal-thriller-mystery. Give me more!! And I have more, thanks to NetGally! Off I go to read the second book in The Whispers trilogy, The Burning Girl: A Whispers Story. *Thanks to NetGalley and Pocket Books for providing me with a review copy.

In the past author Lisa Unger has written two books set in The Hollows, a secluded town 100 miles outside New York City. Both books-- Fragile and Darkness, My Old Friend-- feature an ensemble cast, and Unger has long wanted to flesh out some of the characters living in this fictional town.First up is psychic Eloise Montgomery in "The Whispers," number one in a series of three digital short stories. Set in 1985, "The Whispers" tells us Eloise's backstory. Eloise, her husband, and two daughters were involved in a horrendous car crash that killed husband Alfie and oldest daughter Emily. Now she and Amanda have the seemingly insurmountable task of learning to cope with their loss and moving on. They aren't always successful. Eloise must also deal with a very strange side effect from her injuries in the car crash: she can hear whispers from the other side, and she feels uncontrollable urges to act on those whispers. She's not Super Sleuth or Wonder Psychic. She's a rather ordinary grieving widow and mother standing in the doorway of a strange new world-- and she thinks she's going crazy. She gathers as much information as she can from these whispers and contacts the authorities so they can do what they're trained for. Basking in the limelight from any success is the last thing she wants to do, and that one small detail endeared her to me.In a few short pages, Lisa Unger has created a very real mother and daughter who quickly engage a reader's interest and sympathy. This first digital short story sets up the following two perfectly, and I can't wait to read them. Moreover, since I had never read any of Unger's books before, I'm looking forward to reading them as well.(Note: "The Whispers" is roughly 45 pages long. The rest of the download consists of a sneak peek at Unger's novel Crazy Love You.)
