About this audiobook

Internationally bestselling author John Connolly takes readers into the dark world of private detective Charlie Parker, whose deadly fight against evil begins when the daughter of a South Carolina millionaire is raped and murdered.

In South Carolina, a young black man faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Marianne Larousse, daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. It's a case that nobody wants to touch, a case with its roots in old evil, and old evil is private detective Charlie Parker's speciality.

But Parker is about to enter a living nightmare, a red dreamscape haunted by the murderous spectre of a hooded woman, by a black car waiting for a passenger that never comes, and by the complicity of both friends and enemies in the events surrounding Marianne Larousse's death. This is not an investigation. This is a descent into the abyss, a confrontation with dark forces that threaten all that Parker holds dear: his lover, his unborn child, even his soul...

For in a prison cell far to the north, an old adversary is about to take his revenge on Charlie Parker, its instruments the very men that Parker is hunting, and a strange, hunched creature that keeps its own secrets buried by a riverbank: the undiscovered killer Cyrus Nairn.

Soon, all of these figures will face a final reckoning in southern swamps and northern forests, in distant locations linked by a single thread, a place where the paths of the living and the dead converge.

A place known only as the White Road.

Not sure how I feel about this one. Charlie Parker kills at will, even for revenge. Yet he wants to stop a black man from doing the same. Mmmmm

I really enjoyed this series, this is actually my second time reading the Charlie Parker series, and I recommend it if you like deep, dark psychological thrillers with a lot of action, some humor, interesting characters, wildly twisting plots and even a touch of the otherworldly. Light against dark, good versus evil, and all the shades of grey in the middle.

A good combination of supernatural evil and crime fiction, I have read most of JC's novells and this one was one of his better novels.

Great for the background on Angel & Lois but uncharacteristically disjointed compared to his other works. Still a great book, Just not as tightly woven as the others. Even still, this four would be a 5 compared to other works found in the genre.

P.I. Charlie Parker travels to Charleston, South Carolina to help a friend, Eliot Norton who is defending a black man accused of the rape and murder of his white girlfriend. The girlfriend was the daughter of one of the richest men in the area.Charlie is joined by his two friends, Angel and Louis. They discover that the man and his girlfriend are members of two families who have been feuding since before the Civil War.John Connolly is an excellent story teller who knows the way to his reader's heart and mind. There is enough of legend and history of racial tensions in this area so that the reader is immediately captivated. There is also a connection with Connolly's last book, "The Killing Kind."In that novel, Rev. Faulkner was captured by Parker and is awaiting trial for the murder of the Aroostook Baptists. Faulkner has promised to get out of jail and take revenge on Parker's family. In this case, Parker learns that some right wing liberals are helping to fund Faulkner's defense. The novel is skillfully plotted and is a first rate thriller.

I worried that Connolly had finally gone too far into the paranormal arena, but he resolved that nicely. The spiritual writing verges on the pretentious, but the series remains at or near the top of my list of favorites.
