About this audiobook
A scintillating debut novel about a young couple whose marriage is tested when they move to an army base rife with love triangles, life-or-death conflicts, and a dramatic cover-up
In 1959, Nat Collier moves with her husband, Paul, and their two young daughters to Idaho Falls, a remote military town. An Army Specialist, Paul is stationed there to help oversee one of the country's first nuclear reactors-an assignment that seems full of opportunity.
Then, on his rounds, Paul discovers that the reactor is compromised, placing his family and the entire community in danger. Worse, his superiors set out to cover up the problem rather than fix it. Paul can't bring himself to tell Nat the truth, but his lies only widen a growing gulf between them.
Lonely and restless, Nat is having trouble adjusting to their new life. She struggles to fit into her role as a housewife and longs for a real friend. When she meets a rancher, Esrom, she finds herself drawn to him, comforted by his kindness and company. But as rumors spread, the secrets between Nat and Paul build and threaten to reach a breaking point.
Based on a true story of the only fatal nuclear accident to occur in America, The Longest Night is a deeply moving novel that explores the intricate makeup of a marriage, the shifting nature of trust, and the ways we try to protect the ones we love.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I have never heard about Idaho Falls or the nuclear accident that occurred there prior to this book, and I'm certainly going to do some follow-up reading! I love it when I can learn about something new from historical fiction and that was definitely the case with The Longest Night, which included well-developed characters and a strong sense of the time and place. An enjoyable book & highly recommended for historical fiction fans.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Based on a true story about the only fatal nuclear accident in the US. Paul and Nat move to Idaho Falls. He is in the military and will work on one of the country's 1st nuclear reactors. Paul soon discovers the reactor is compromised but his supervisors cover up the problem. He has a major blow out with his supervisor and is sent to the Arctic Circle for 6 months. While he's gone, Nat has a friendship with a local man, Esrom. Rumors start to fly with the supervisor turning the screws on Paul. When Paul returns he takes off after arguing with Nat. He ends up back towards the reactor and discovers it has had a meltdown, trapping his buddies inside. He attempts to rescue them and becomes contaminated. Ironically, Esrom is a firefighter who is also contaminated at the scene. They end up at the same decontamination center. Esrom is released before Paul and Paul enlists him to take his family out of the area. Nat send the girls with Esrom and rescues Paul from the decon center. They end up reconciling, he leaves the army and they relocate to a private reactor site in Illinois.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Digital audiobook performed by Rebecca Lowman, Hillary Huber and MacLeod AndrewsIn June 1959, a young military couple moves to Idaho Falls when the husband is assigned to work at one of the country’s first nuclear power plants. Natalie and Paul Collier have two girls, but Nat can’t seem to form any friendships among the other Army wives and she’s lonely and restless. Paul notices some issues with the reactor and feels that his superiors are doing nothing to correct the problems. Tensions build, and it’s a question of what will blow first – the reactor, Paul’s career, or Nat and Paul’s marriage.I love character-based novels like this. The way in which Williams writes these characters gives great insight into what is going on. The reader is privy to their secret thoughts, their emotions, fears, disappointments, joys, and expectations. Williams gives us three narrators; in addition to Paul and Nat, we also have Jeannie, the wife of Paul’s supervisor, Master Sergeant Richards. Where Paul and Nat are young, in love, with their future ahead of them, Jeannie and her husband have settled into a sort of truce. She puts up with his womanizing and drinking, trying her best to ensure he doesn’t mess up enough to jeopardize his retirement pension. He closes his eyes to Jeannie’s mean-spiritedness, her gossiping and efforts to numb her disappointments with a drink – or a dalliance - of her own.Add a handsome local cowboy into the mix and things get interesting quickly. I was interested and engaged from beginning to end and could hardly put it down. The audiobook is performed by three talented voice artists: Rebecca Lowman, Hillary Huber and MacLeod Andrews. They do a marvelous job. Each takes a different narrator, making it easy to follow the changes in point of view.
