About this audiobook

In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder—but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated.

And look for Alafair Burke’s latest heart-racing novel of psychological suspense, The Wife, coming in January 2018.

Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it.

Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night’s party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That’s when Jack’s world falls apart.

Olivia Randall is one of New York City’s best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fiancé, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide—and that one of the victims was connected to his wife’s murder—there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him—and why?

For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

I don’t know if it’s fair to review, as I could not get through the first hour of it - the dictation of the narrator was atrocious I could not handle it! Her sentences all ended in a bored sound and I could not get over it. It’s a bummer, too, because I wanted to listen to this one.

I loved this book. It moves at a great pace, it kept me engaged the whole way through and threw in a few twists. I would highly recommend this book.

I loved the story ...but... the narrator's voice and all the male voices that she did were quite annoying. She always seems to trail off on the last word no matter what part she was reading for. The voice of Don, was the absolute worse ...like nails on a chalkboard cringe worthy. It often sounded like someone mocking someone else, not someone narrating a story.

Loved It! Took me awhile to figure out who did it, but the reveal was worth the read.

This was a good audiobook to listen to while driving and on my daily walks/ kayaks. Nothing too taxing and the narrator did a very good job. I liked the characters and their realistic flaws, no super exceptional perfect humans, just realistic characters which appealed to me. If you if you read or listen to a lot of crime or mystery books you will likely "see" the twist coming . Before it was halfway through I figured out the end , just not how they were going to get there exactly....so I continued to listen to see if I was right and because it was not difficult to listen to. Overall it was a good story.

I honestly kept thinking that Jack did it to frame Olivia for her infidelity but towards the end I had a battle between Buckley & Jack being the suspect. Overall, it was a whirlwind of a book. Loved it!

The recording skipped among the chapters at random. 30 minutes in, the last paragraph played and I knew the ending. So frustrating!

An entertaining listen. Predictable though. Very predictable. I wish it would have proved my prediction wrong, I would have enjoyed the ending better.

This book was so slow. I made it halfway wondering when the excitement would start, and it never did. It had the potential to be so much better.

The definitive thriller. Usually have some measure of disappointment when finishing a thriller, poor character development or some part of the plot appeared to implausible. Not the case here. Kudos Ms Burke!!

Its an interesting book to listen to while doing chores. Above average. The story is slow though and not mind blowing.
The narrators impersonation of voices wasn’t great either.
I think Burke did a good job with the Ex’s character and that suspense kept me going.

I enjoyed the story a lot. I listen to audiobooks to keep me awake during my commute and this was just what I was looking for. Interesting but easy to follow and a little predictable. My only issue is the narrator. Her inflection is weird, she sounds almost bored And as another reviewer pointed out, she gets almost inaudible at the end of pretty much every other sentence. I have to blast the book and can still barely hear her when she starts to trail off.
