The author’s vivid descriptions make me want to visit this part of the country. This is a story that could be read as a standalone. There are some characters from the first book that make an appearance in this story, but are not really relevant to the plot of this second book.Kevin O’Connor is a game warden for the state of Maine. He is divorced with an 8-year-old daughter, who has custody of as her mother wanted nothing to do with her. He had the love of his life, Mallory Davis, break his heart be leaving town after a traumatic event in her life. His parents always wanted him to be a doctor, but Kevin always wanted to be a game warden. His parents think Mallory Davis is the reason he didn’t become a doctor, but he knows she is the one who gave him the courage to follow his dream. After fifteen years, Mallory is back in town and calling him for help. Kevin’s already strained relationship with his parents gets downright nasty once they learn Mallory is back in town. He guards his heart to keep from making the same choice of fifteen years ago, but he feels wonderful when he is with her.Mallory Davis is a widow with an almost 15-year-old daughter, trying to make ends meet by making jewelry. She receives a phone call from her father, telling her of his love and to find her mother. Then the call ends abruptly. She and her father have a strained relationship and don’t talk to each other often, but how can she find her mother when her mother has been dead for fifteen years? She calls her former boyfriend, Kevin, and asks him to check on her father. What he finds brings Mallory back to town. While there she discovers what her heart has always known…she still loves Kevin. However, more questions arise and more threats are leveled at Mallory. Who is out to hurt her?The story has easy dialogue to follow, short chapters, clues to follow and tension to ramp up to the exciting ending! Of course, there is romance thrown in as well as faith and wanting to do things right the second time around. Second chances and forgiveness are seen as well. I just loved how Kevin put Mallory’s safety and needs before his own, even when she had hurt his heart so much in the past. He still put her first because that is what God would want him to do. I also thought it was a cool touch to have Gwen Marcey make an appearance in this story. I’ve read and really enjoyed both books in that series as well.       A long time favorite of fans of Christian romantic suspense, Colleen Coble has written another book sure to please. Mermaid Moon, book 2 in the Sunset Cove series, revisits the islands of Maine. Characters old and new are introduced, along with fast-paced action, a twisting mystery, and a second chance romance. This one is a recommended read!Mallory Davis left everything behind when she fled her home fifteen years before. A strained relationship with her father is all that is left from her childhood. But a phone call sends her running back to find justice. She also finds her long buried feelings for Game Warden Kevin O’Connor are still as strong as ever. Their shaky partnership has to endure family anger, guilt and danger around every corner.I have never been to Maine, but I want to go more than ever now! The setting of the small islands off the coast of Maine is great. I loved the descriptions of the sea, the wildlife, and the sky. Characters from book one, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, make appearances, along with new additions that readers will love. There is even a character from another author who has a cameo role. While the main characters get a second chance at love, they also learn that God is in the second chance business as well. Coble makes it clear that God is not surprised by our circumstances or our mistakes, but will enter into our lives with grace, mercy and love. The mystery keeps the reader and the characters guessing, although the reader is let in on the who, but not the why, early on. Spoiler alert: My husband is a veterinarian and works with public health officials with the issue of rabies, so I checked with him. There is one scene in the book involving someone infected with rabies that while possible, would be very improbable.All in all, Mermaid Moon is a good continuation of this series, and I look forward to more from Colleen Coble in the future.Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Litfuse and Thomas Nelson for a review copy.       Mallory Davis's mother died 15 years ago. Feeling like she was the cause, Mallory left behind the home she loved as well as the man she loved and was going to marry, Kevin O'Connor, and has never returned. Out of the blue, Mallory receives a distressing phone call from her father and with his last breath, tells her he loves her and instructs her to 'find mother'. Believing that her father's death was no accident, Kevin (who is now a game warden and the local law in Downeast Maine) believes she's right and begins to look into it. Things heat up when Mallory and her daughter Haylie are threatened. As they begin putting the pieces together, both Kevin and Mallory are surprised by what they find and begin to realize there's a whole lot more to this situation than they ever anticipated. Will they figure it out before it's too late.Once again Colleen Coble delivers a well thought out, tightly written, and at times nail-biting, romantic suspense. Right away you're pulled into the story and you don't want to put it down until you find out how it all turns out. I was trying to unravel the mystery right along with Mallory and Kevin as it was most certainly a tangled web. For those who have read The Inn at Ocean's Edge, you'll find Luke, Claire and Kate a part of this story which I thoroughly enjoyed. You don't need to read that book for this book to make sense but it does give you the background of those characters. The main theme of the story was second chances. Sometimes we get stuck because of a mistake or mistakes we've made in the past when instead we should be growing through them and not allowing them to define our future. That was a great reminder. Kevin's father was a good example of what unforgiveness can turn into. You'll understand when you read the story. There was a little something at the end that I felt was unresolved but it wasn't anything that detracted from my reading experience. I loved that this is also loosely connected with Denise Hunter's Summer Harbor series. That was great fun! If you've never visited Maine, or even if you have, I would highly recommend taking a trip there via Mermaid Moon. You'll enjoy the beautiful landscape, ride a boat, meet some great friends and, oh yea, solve a murder.       There is a little bit of everything in this fast-paced thriller. Murder, both a cold case and a recent one, a secret adoption, embezzlement, kidnapping, false witnessing, deceit, broken romance, renewed romance, divorce, pregnancy, miscarriage, another pregnancy, fire, another fire, more secrets, and still more happenings are all tied together in this exciting tale. The plot is intriguing and the characters are interesting, and even if the whole tale has a few too many coincidences and close calls, it is still quite an entertaining story.

I finally did get straighten out due to Claire and her sister. I found the rustic life in Maine to be fun and as rural as Maine truly is. I enjoyed the characters, although Mallory tended to hold onto the past a little too much. Her neighbor Carol was well written. The book had some twists and turns I was not expecting which makes it a must read in my book. I liked the theme of forgiveness that was running through the book. Kevin was great, the best character of all. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I thought that finding her birth father was exciting and that her father truly had changed life in Christ. While the books are great and Colleen Coble does have a theme of Christianity running through it she has decreased the intensity of it and Mallory’s birth father was the strongest Christian in the book with Kevin being 2nd. I really loved that part. It was not preachy just a factual change of life. Those are something that can speak the loudest. I hope her books continue to be that way.       It is always nice to read the second book in a series. You already know some of the characters, so it feels like catching up with old friends. The author does a great job of reacquainting readers with characters and introducing new ones with ease. Her writing style is smooth and deliberate which keeps you on your toes. I love a great mystery and this is one of the best. Mallory is trying to reclaim her life after the loss of her husband. It is hard to move on, but she is doing her best. When she gets a phone call from her dad, she is perplexed. She senses something is not right and returns to Mermaid Point after fifteen years. When her dad dies, she must come to terms with the past . She runs into Kevin who at one point she thought would be her future. Old hurts and memories surface and she must face them head on. Why does Mallory suddenly get death threats on her and her daughter's life? Is there more to her father's death than she has been told? Mermaid Moon is a very suspenseful book with secrets that could tear a town apart. The web of lies and deceit are so intricately woven, you are on the edge of your seat. It must feel eerie to come back home, only to discover you don't know who to trust. The author has brilliantly given us a rich story filled with mysterious characters and weaves the lives of many together to a story you won't forget. It seems like nothing is as it should be in this quaint little town and Mallory is determined to get answers. We all make mistakes, but will Mallory be able to recover from hers?       More Suspense Than I Bargained For!!It's been a while since I've read a Colleen Coble book. I forgot one word that best describes her romantic suspense..."urgency!" Mermaid Moon certainly appears to start sleepily, with Mallory Davis trying to sell her sea glass creations. An English lit teacher would tell you that the sea glass itself is a portend of what Mallory's life starts out as, a mess, yet God is working on her rough edges, as surely as the sea smooths out the rough edges of glass, to make something beautiful.However, it takes a lot of work to create that beauty in Mallory's life. Mallory has left her childhood home,Folly Shores,(how fitting!!); her almost-groom, Kevin, and her father. Sure that she caused her mother's death, Mallory only returns fifteen years later to uncover the cause of her father's mysterious death.Unbeknownst to Mallory, there are more relationships to sort through than she can foresee;more mystery than she has counted on; and more danger than she can reasonably expect. Coble does a great job of stirring up the heartstrings of emotions and playing a despairing, desperate tune in the reader'stheatre. Letting go of the past,using God's grace to forgive oneself and others;and letting adult children choose their own paths are all themes played out on this thrilling stage.A favorite quote: "Blaming someone else is always easier than looking squarely at the truth."       Mermaid Moon is the second book in this series and I recommend that you read the first, equally excellent, but this book can stand-alone.Can you imagine getting a call from you father as he is dying? Then trying to reach him as fast as you can, with the hope that you can save him. This is basically what happened to Mallory fifteen years ago, and now she is returning home under similar circumstances. Last time she felt responsible for the death of her mother, and now her father’s last words were to find her mother.Strange words from a dying man that lead us on an adventure to save her and her daughters lives. Someone is really out to wipe out this family and to hide their trail, and around every corner is new danger and surprises.This book really flows and I had to keep reading and enjoying, sometimes with my heart in my throat, to find the answers here. There is so much going on and so many surprises, and you won’t see most of them coming. I really enjoyed this book and read it because I love Colleen Coble’s book.
