    This tale follows the adventures of Anne, a young, red-haired orphan who has spent her entire childhood being passed around from one foster home to the next. Until one day she is sent to Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert by mistake.

    While trying to adopt a boy to help work on their farm, the Cuthbert's ended up with Anne, who they could not send away after learning that an evil woman in town was attempting to adopt her.

    Anne gains many friendships in her new town with her eager, quick-witted, and bright attitude. While working on the farm, she also finds herself excelling in school and aspires to become a teacher.

    Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1874 and raised by her maternal grandparents following her mother's death when she was just two years old. Biographical accounts of her upbringing suggest a strict and rather lonely childhood. She later spent a number of years working as a teacher before turning to journalism and then, ultimately to fiction writing. While Anne of Green Gables was completed in 1905 Montgomery was at first unable to find a publisher for it and - having set it aside for a while - eventually found a champion for it in the Page Company of Boston. Her first novel - and the one which was to prove by far her most successful - was published in 1908 and has remained in print the world over ever since. In creating the uniquely memorable Anne, Montgomery gave the world of classic fiction one of its most enduring heroines.

      One of my all time favorites. I have read it a few times and will probably read it a few more. I have only gotten through to the second book in the series, but plan on reading others in the future.

      Before I got married, my middle name was Anne. With an “e.” Just like Anne of Green Gables. Now my middle name is my maiden name, but that’s besides the point.I must have read Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery when I was a little girl, but all I remember is watching the movie.       I have long loved LM Montgomery's work, and I was thrilled to find this wonderful special limited edition when I visited the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner, PEI. The tome itself is a truly lovely thing. And the story -- well, in my eyes and in my heart -- the story never grows old.

      This is one of my favorite books of all time. I love the beauty in Montgomery's prose, her descriptions of Prince Edward Island, and the people who live in the small town of Avonlea. But most of all, I love Anne Shirley. She is, indeed, a kindred spirit. My love for this book is so strong, it's a struggle to put into words. I feel like I don't have the capacity to describe the wonder and the joy it invokes in me every time I read it. A true classic, and I can't wait to reread the rest of the Anne books this year. Highly, highly recommended. If you haven't read this book, you are, in my opinion, missing out on one of the great pleasures of life. Five stars, and I'd give it more if Library Thing allowed it.

      After many years, I have decided to revisit this classic series. My mother first introduced me to the series when I was twelve-years-old and I have read it several times since. As a younger reader "Anne of Green Gables" was always my least favourite. Now, forty years later, I was thoroughly entertained by this book. I loved all the descriptions of Green Gables and Avonlea, and the innocence of a bygone era.Matthew Cuthbert, Gilbert Blythe and Aunt Josephine were always my favourite characters, and they remained so. However, I was surprised by how much I liked Anne and Marilla. For some unknown reason, I have always remembered Marilla as a hard, unforgiving woman, but I discovered she really had a heart of gold and loved Anne as though she was her own daughter.As for Anne herself, she used to annoy me with the antics and continual talking, but this time I admired her incorrigible spirit, her love of nature, her vivid imagination and her passion for stories. In fact I found myself close to tears at times when she talked about her past life.Although written over a century ago, I found "Anne of Green Gables" a charming, delightful read which still has much appeal for today's modern readers.

      You may have watched the movie, the 2-night special, or the latest adaptation on Netflix - but you haven't truly experienced Anne of Green Gables until you read the books. I read them as a pre-teen and have re-read them many times. Published well over a hundred years ago the narrative reads a tad clunky and dated at times. But I am not saying that is a bad thing. In a world filled techno-gadgets, vampires, and witches, where something is blown-up or killed every three-seconds-- it was nice to have a stress-free, relaxing reading experience. Anne is an 11-year-old orphan longing for a home to call her own. Despite her tender age, she had known heartbreak. It was how she chose to deal with it that resonates with me to this day. Anne looked for the good in everyone and everything and with her boundless imagination if she couldn't find it -- she simply created it. She had a light within her that refused to be dimmed. This is a timeless classic I cannot wait to share with my granddaughter. If you have never read this book or if it has been a while, sneak off to your favorite, comfy spot and reconnect with a simpler time.Happy Reading,RJ

      I can't believe it's taken me so long to read this. I feel like somehow I missed out on an integral part of childhood by not reading this as a young girl. What a fun, charming, beautiful tale of an orphan girl and her new family. Heartwarming and entertaining. I look forward to the rest of the series.

      I never read this when I was young. I can see the attraction, for the pre-teen girl, and indeed my own daughter enjoyed it. However, for an adult the story holds very little of interest. I can enjoy the descriptions of nature, but it is too preachy and has little character development except for Anne and a bit for Marilla.

      I'm not sure how I missed this Avonlea boat as a young person. Oh wait, I do know. But that it's taken me 40 years to discover it, I shall not despair. I will catch up soon enough! In the beginning of the book I didn't think Anne was my kind of gal. I said to myself, "I'm more of a Matilda person." Matilda is quiet and determined and observant. Yet, as happened to so many of the other characters in this book, she grew on me. I'm still not convinced that Mrs. Rachel Lynde is a "good soul," but I guess I should forgive her for being a backwards, snobby, a-hole. She was a woman of her times. I've already looked into airfare and accommodations to Prince Edward Island. It's on my bucket list.

      I read all of the Anne books as a child, and then drifted away from them, but upon coming back I find that I still love these books. While they aren't as "meaty" as other books I could be reading, they are definitely enjoyable.

Anne surprises but charms the Cuthberts with her lucrative overactive imagination and nonstop chatter.It is not long before Anne wins the hearts of her whole town, and not just because she is bright, for the cute and mischievous Gilbert Blythe—whom Anne refuses to ever speak to again after he teasingly called her Carrots—is a good brain, too. It is her unmatchable spirit and optimism in the face of adversary that conquers the coldest hearts…well, all except the unconquerable, Anne concedes, concerning the egotistical Josie Pye. But Anne, together with her “bosom friend” Diana Barry, Marilla, Matthew, the new minister’s wife, Diana’s grumpy old aunt, and yes, even Gilbert Blythe, proves that life is a magical, magical thing, no matter what it throws at you.This is hands-down one of my favorite books of all time. There is no one like Anne in the history of literature who can match her spirit and ability to get into hilarious scrapes. This children’s classics will be loved by readers of ALL ages, guaranteed. It will make you laugh and cry and wish you were living in Anne’s world. I LOVE it!

      For Christmas, I ordered an mp3 player (Library of Classics) that was pre-loaded with 100 works of classic literature in an audio format. Each work is in the public domain and is read by amateurs, so the quality of the presentation is hit or miss. After sampling about a dozen more well-known offerings, I was left to select those with which I was less familiar. That is how I came across Anne of Green Gables.This is a simply written story of a young orphan girl, age eleven, who is taken in by a middle aged couple on Prince Edward Island in Canada around the end of the 19th century. Anne Shirley is a very bright, imaginative and extremely talkative young lady who has a way of finding herself in a number of interesting situations. While it soon became obvious that this was more in the nature of a young adult offering, I nevertheless listened to its conclusion. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for adult readers, it would seem to be a perfectly good option for early teen readers.

      Definitely an all-time favorite. The later Anne books tend toward the romantic, but this one is wonderfully silly, moving, and engaging.

      This was one of my favorite books as a child. I fell in love with Anne (make sure you spell it "Anne with an e!") right from the beginning, and enjoyed reading about each and every one of her antics. I was greatly surprised when I learned that there was an entire series devoted to her, and I read them all time and time again as a youngster.

      This whole series was one of my favorite series growing up. It is set in Canada at the turn of the 20th Century. Anne is a great example of a girl who loves to read and has an amazing imagination. I love Anne Shirley. I always wanted to have red hair because of her. I just think all little girls should read about this strong-willed girl!Reading Level: 5.2 Interest Level: 3-6

      Before I started this book I realized that I had never felt compelled to read this series, not even as a little girl. But then again, I never read books that little girls were "supposed" to read. When I started it, I thought straight off that Anne was going to be way too annoying. But mid-way through, I found that I was still reading and that she had a way of just staying shy of the line of annoyance that would make me put the book down forever. Bully for her.

      Although L.M Montgomery's description heavy writing can get a little clunky at times, her novel "Anne of Green Gables" is otherwise just wonderful. The story is about Anne Shirley, a plucky and romantic girl who gets herself in all sorts of scrapes, mainly due to her hot temper. All of the characters -- inhabitants of Price Edward Island -- are interesting, charming and likable. Overall, this is a quick and enjoyable read... I come back every once and a while to read it again and again.

      Spirited, fanciful, loyal, loving, and diligent, Anne is a delightful creation, brimful of emotion and adventure. The simple charms of Prince Edward Island, the abundance of nature, and the memorable scrapes she gets into are so. vivid as to be somehow in our common heritage memory, already familiar even.as one discovers them. Poignant, funny, wise, the book is a well-rounded, timeless pleasure.

      Anne Shirley warms the hearts of two people Marilla and Matthew Cuthbets take in this child. Anne has been going from home to home for some time now. She meets the Cuthberts and warms there hearts especially Matthew who is not so easy to get to. I love this story have seen the movie about dozen times but love the book.

      My favourite book of all time. I have read this book about ten times!!!!! Everyone knows Anne Shirley's story, but if you haven't read the book, you don't know what you're missing. Anne is literature's spunkiest heroine...it's hard not to love this book.

      Revisiting an old favorite via audiobook. Caruso captures Anne's spirit wonderfully well, and her narration is top-notch. The story is a bit more treacly than I remember at the beginning, and I found myself sympathizing with Marilla when Anne was nattering endlessly about some foolishness. I got over it all by the middle of the book and wept at the end. Very well-done.

      The writing here is brilliant and particularly the construction of Anne as a character. But it hits a lull in the last third of the book, where we become more distant from Anne. The writing switches from dialogue to description and starts to feel like I'm reading an overlong epilogue.

      It's been 50 years since I first read this book, so when I saw the free Kindle edition, I decided to see if it was as good as my vague memory thought it was. It definitely was as good—actually better than I remembered. I laughed out loud, wiped away tears, and thoroughly enjoyed getting reacquainted with Anne "with an e."

      A book that's "felt like" I'd read it already for years when I hadn't. I've seen and have immensely enjoyed all three Anne of Green Gables films with Megan Follows several times, and I've read other Anne books, just never the first--until now.Exactly what I'd "felt like" it would be, and it didn't disappoint! It probably doesn't have what some modern experts might call perfect plot development, but Montgomery has her own genius that goes to show that books don't have to follow all the prescribed rules to be extraordinary and timeless. (Hmm. It seems that classic literature that has been lauded and loved for generations oftentimes doesn't follow all the rules people now say literature must adhere to in order to be "good" reading these days, and I doubt we'd like the classics half as much if they fit into the boxes that are now prescribed.) Anyway, to avoid a rant, I'll just say I can see why Anne Shirley is an internationally beloved heroine, and I'm delighted to have finally read the first book. Beautiful!
