About this audiobook

Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper and Small Great Things pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by a school shooting. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.

I know a lot of people call Picoult formulaic, but I can't help it -- call me a fan of the formula. This book is reminiscent of such Picoult classics as The Pact and Salem Falls in that it features a classic courtroom drama with a big surprise at the end.

And sure, maybe you can guess the surprise, maybe you know what's coming, but, to me, it doesn't stop the joy of reading along to find out whether you're right or not. I couldn't put this one down.

Story centers around a small town high school -- a student regularly bullied and victimized by his peers brings a gun to school and kills and injures a number of his classmates. The story is told from a variety of perspectives, including the shooter, his mother, the town judge, the judge's daughter (a high school student), and the detective on the case. Picoult does a find job of weaving all their stories together as the book comes to its inevitable shocking conclusion.

This book is very addicting because of all the questions the reader seeks to be answered. With each page more questions arise and answers are still to come. Picoult, as usual, adds a great twist at the end that you probably didn't see coming. The book also ends in a fashion that is up to interpretation.

Nineteen Minutes also provides a fictional story that combines the events and feelings of all school shootings. It tells stories of people that are hurt for various different reasons and reveals truths to the characters that are both happy and sad. The tragic events of this book shed light on real situations that have occurred in the USA in recent years.

I thought it was written so passionately and very empathetic. I continue to think about the characters and how I felt if it were me in the courtroom, or a parent or a child in this book.

I've read this book several times and decided to listen to the audio version this time around. Jodi Picoult is my favorite author. Ever. And I've loved this book since I read the first page years ago, so this time was no different. I cry every time no matter what, and even though I related more to Josie back when I was younger, Jodi always offers character storylines of every age in her books so as you get older you just connect with someone else in the book. This one is so sad but also such an accurate depiction of bullying and its effects on kids. Especially in today's world, it helps you understand what might lead someone to do such horrible things.

I want to also add that the woman who reads this book has the perfect voice for it. When she switches characters you can always tell who she is speaking as, even if the writing doesn't tell you. And her voice isn't robotic or comical. Very professional and appropriate.

This book is about a tough, but real tragedy that seems to happen too much in our world now. I felt the way Jodi Picoult wrote allowed us to see into the characters in a way that helped to understand them each. This book was a read that I will never forget.

I had a lot of good things about this book and I am happy to say that it was quite good. I enjoyed the book. And it felt very real in context of current scenario. The pacing was right. The plot twist was intriguing.

Brilliant !! Much much more than 5 stars !!! The Narrator made it so much more interesting, realistic and raw. The story was so emotional and engaging...Could not get over this story for a long, long time.

Hard hitting subject we face as educators especially since Columbine. VERY well done! The story of a student pushed to the limits and what he does about it. The twist at the end however you won't see coming!

This may be my favorite Jodi Picoult book yet! It kept my attention the entire book. I am not a good book reviewer, but I will say this is one you don’t want to miss. The ending pretty much blew me away. I had to go back and listen more than once because I wasn’t sure I heard it right. Wow! I will highly recommend this book too! She is such a good author.

This was one of those books that made you want to put your life on hold to finish it! However, I did not empathize with the characters as much as in My Sister's Keeper, perhaps because there were so many. Yet Peter, the shooter, is so real in my mind. His 'persona' is so common in schools.

I’m a dishwasher and I am listening to this audiobook while I work. It’s really good. But it is so traumatizing I can’t stop tearing up and crying.

I found this book maddening and I’m actually pretty upset at one of my favorite authors. It was very interesting and I plowed through it. The characters were interesting. The maddening part is that school shooter Peter, even if fictional, gets shown in a sympathetic way. Some of those he killed get shown in a negative way and they really were cruel jerks, but others were truly innocent victims and they’re presented almost as afterthoughts. Bullying is serious. Bullying is wrong. Bullying does damage. I was a victim of a bully during middle school and the damage lasted well into my adulthood and affected many decisions I made as well as how I thought of myself for a long time. Like Peter, I tried talking to people about it, but I didn’t get help. Yet nothing my bully did and nothing the bullies did to Peter or Josie is punishable by death.

I think it’s irresponsible to show a mass killer in anything but a negative light. Shame on you, Jodi Picoult.

Nineteen Minutes is actually the first Jodi Picoult book that I have read. The synopsis sounded interesting - the aftermath of (and flashbacks to the run-up to) a school shooting. I was immediately drawn into the story and this was one of those stories that I couldn’t wait to pick up again and carry on reading.

There’s not many gory details, and there’s plenty of emotion. I enjoyed this book a lot

Great, but truthful book! Surprised at ending. Thriller to the end.

This book is devastating, not in the way that can sometimes be comforting. The most heartbreaking part of this book is the avoid-ability of the tragedy. If a book is to be judged simply off of its ability to draw emotion this would certainly get five stars. However, the senselessness off the whole thing really draws the listener into the pits of humanity and offers no solace. If I’m being honest, I wish I never clicked play on my train ride home weeks ago. I don’t think there is anything to be gained from starting this book.

I loved the perspective from the bullied one who turned vindictive. I often thought about that after Columbine. What would drive someone to do something like that. While there's no excuse, there is a reason. And all the families left to deal with the fallout, including the families of the shooters, so much pain. Well written and thought provoking. My only complaint was that the ending fell flat for me. I don't know why, but it just did. Overall a really good listen!

It was a well told story with a twist toward the end, which I always find in this author’s work. Characters are believable. I had a bit of trouble with following the timeline. Otherwise, a great read.
