About this audiobook

This comical, fantastical, romantical, New York Times bestselling, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey is “an uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind YA fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.

Like that could go wrong.

They first met in 2012, when their publishers sent them on a book tour together, and they hit it off so well they decided to write My Lady Jane so they could go on book tours together all the time. Between the three of them they’ve written more than twenty published novels, a bunch of novellas, a handful of short stories, and a couple of really bad poems. They’re friends. They’re writers. They’re fixing history by rewriting one sad story at a time. Learn more at ladyjanies.com.

What a great narration. This takes a spin on historical facts about monarch family.
Jane is forced into a marriage with G whom she has never met. She has had a blemished past with failed engagements. She finds out her new husband has a curse and someone is trying to kill the King. Listen to this book as it tells you what some of the history books may not tell us. I could listen to this again. I am sure I may have missed something.

3.5 stars on this one. I really enjoyed it but some parts were kind of frustrating. It was hilarious and fun and sweet, otherwise.

I'm not the biggest fan of historical fiction, but this book took such a interesting, funny twist on the time period and world, that I couldn't stop laughing while listening to the book. The only thing I would take of a half star off are the nose jokes. I am uncomtable with jokes about anyone's body. But overall this was a charming, funny love story based in a twisted version on Earth.

Completely hilarious, fun, adventurous, romantic and magical!! Full of witty banter between the characters!! Seamless timeline, and a gloriously magical and romantic and funny plot!! Tons of fun and adventurous plot twists as well. The character builds were riveting and bold, the world building was vibrant and lush!! A story for every age!!

Cute story. Predictable at times. Similar to the Princess Bride in its "historical fiction" attitude. Some characterization tropes were overwhelmingly redundant, as was the feminist angst. I'd recommend it for a teenage audience.

So much fun! I love books that make me laugh out loud. It’s a bouncy, lovable, retelling of England’s History, which has nothings whatsoever to do with history. I loved every minute of it. The narrator was also amazing!

I like historical fiction and I also like fantasy. The two together don't seem like a natural fit to me. That being said, I generally enjoyed the story. Some of the asides were frankly, not needed. And the range from the deep to the superficial seemed somewhat disjointed. One minute the characters seem developed and the next they're very superficial [to the point of this being obnoxious on a couple of occasions]. Generally, however, this was an interesting read.

Historically accurate? Well, no. Fun read? Yes! Instead of Catholics and Protestants, in this alternative history, England is divided by Edians (people who can turn into animals) and Verities (people who find this ability appalling). Lady Jane Grey is a supporter of Edians, which makes her a candidate for the throne as the dying Edward VI fears handing the kingdom over to his Verity sister Mary. So commences this fantasy-historical-very-much-fictional novel. I enjoyed reading it and anticipate similar reads from this trio of authors.

A lot of people seem to like this book and I am okay admitting that my experience is probably due to a lot of factors that don't reflect on the author or the work.1. It seems like there is a lot of love for the audio version of this book. I wish I had gone that direction. I think I can see my self enjoying it more performed than read. A lot of the book read like a movie script to me and so having a narrator might have made that all feel less conspicuous.2. I think I was not in the right frame of mind for this. I was thinking it was YA historical fiction. I was not prepared for the whole magical element to it. I am generally not a fan of fantasy type books so I definitely felt a bit put upon when I understood that this had a very fantastical story line. 3. One big exception to my not liking fantasy is The Princess Bride. I didn't really enjoy the way this book really tried to emulate the tone from that book. I found it kind of grating and took me out of it all and it just kind of rumpled my feathers.4. This was long. 500 pages. I feel like it was just too long for what it was. 5. I was a history major way back in college and this was the time period I loved the most and although I have enjoyed some historical fiction set in this time period - I am aware that its hard for me not to nitpick or generally be disenchanted just when reading things set in Tudor/Stewart England.Anyway, I think I was grumpy don't let me dissuade you if the whole conceit of this appeals - I think I am an outlier.

Lady Jane Grey didn’t have a happy ending in real life, but the narrators in this book are determined to give her a better story. Her cousin, King Edward, has decreed that she should marry a stranger so that her child can be their heir to the throne instead of his sister Mary who is bloodthirsty towards the group of people who have the ability to turn into animals. Shortly after Jane marries Lord Gifford (or G, as he prefers to be called) and discovers that her husband spends most of his time as a horse, she finds out that she is now the queen of England. Told in three different perspectives, Edward, Jane, and G all race to end the conspiracy to put Mary on the throne, save their own lives, and fall in love.

This book is delightfully fun with charming characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and unexpected rewrites to history. History lovers will appreciate the attention to historical details, but also the irreverence the authors have in making the history move to suit their story. It’s not a book to be taken seriously. The characters are all charming: Edward who just wants to kiss someone before he dies, Jane who doesn’t go anywhere without a few books and prefers them to people, and G who isn’t sure he wants the responsibility of being a man over the ease of being a horse. Even though the characters are written by different authors, the narrative voice feels the same and the tone and humor is consistent throughout the book. The slow romance is nicely done, and the journey to get the right people on the crown is full of excitement. Fans of The Princess Bride, witty pop culture references, history, and books will enjoy this hilarious retelling of a tragic event.

This book is much weirder than I was expecting. The blurb makes it sound like a funny bit of revisionist history, but leaves out the fact that some of the characters have magic that lets them turn into animals, and this magic ends up being a major part of the story.

I think that’s a big selling point (or turnoff, if you don’t like fantasy for some reason), so I’m surprised that they downplayed it to such a degree.

I’m honestly not sure what actually happened to the historical characters included in the book, but it’s nice to believe that they fell in love and had adventures just like they do here.

A very quick read... and “engaging” for that. But 2-dimensional and rather teenage’y. My personal disappointment in all the ways this book repeatedly failed to deliver can fairly be summed up in 1 word: Donkey.
    Ah well. 2 stars.

I read this book as part of a class (state nominations for YA). This is an alternative history to what happened to Lady Jane Grey, cousin of Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth Tudor. The story contains magical elements that are fun, exciting, and interesting. The main magical elements deal with the main characters having shapeshifting capabilities. Anyway, this is a super fun read, perfect for YA audiences.

This is a fantastical, comical reimagining of the life of Lady Jane Grey, in reality the "Nine Days Queen" who ascended to the English throne after Edward VI's death and was summarily executed by Mary I shortly thereafter. This book starts with kernels of truth--the royal family setup, Jane's exceedingly brief rule--but definitely and unabashedly plays around with the details. The authors add various magical elements and often break the fourth wall to (humorously) comment on the proceedings.I wasn't totally sure how the authors were going to manage to make the story of Jane Grey into a comedy, but they somehow managed it--the whole book was utterly ridiculous, in the best way. It was a really quick read; though I'm not totally sure how memorable it'll be, it was definitely a light and pleasant read.

    Well, that was just delightful.

I've seen so many people say that you shouldn't take this book too seriously, and I have to agree. This book was so wacky, so unique. However, it honestly wasn't as weird as I expected. I mean, yes, one of the main characters is literally a horse but when you look past that, the story kept me intrigued and I genuinely cared about the characters. Speaking of the characters, wow... We definitely had some interesting personas here. I honestly loved Jane, but she kind of reminded me of Rachel Berry from Glee? Just with books instead of singing. I absolutely loved and related to all the book jokes made throughout the story.

“He wanted to tell her she'd have more room if she'd just get rid of her books, but he supposed that in her case, it would be like telling a mother she'd have more room if she threw out her children.”

Then there's Edward (the king), oh Edward. I have a bit of a soft spot for this boy. His character growth was awesome, he literally threw sexism out the window and I have to stan. Gifford (the horse), is just a sweetie and his poems give me life. Gracie (the Scottish girl that wears trousers instead of dresses) is a bad bitch and I want to be friends with her.

I do feel that there were some unnecessary scenes/narrations, especially towards the end but they were entertaining nevertheless. So yeah, My Lady Jane was very quirky and very fun and you don't even need to know the story of Lady Jane Grey before reading this.

Tons of fun, with likeable, warm, engaging characters. Plot was fun and I liked the fantasy elements. I did have an issue with a lot of the anachronisms, however, as it wasn’t clear to me the authors had actually done in-depth historical research. I’m fine with playing fast and loose with temporal reality, but it has to feel earned, and I’m not sure this was. I was also troubled by the good/bad dichotomy of edians/verites superimposed on real-life Protestants/Catholics.
