About this audiobook

Now a Netflix original movie, this deeply scary and intensely unnerving novel follows a couple in the midst of a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease. You will be scared. But you won’t know why…

I’m thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. It’s always there. Always.

Jake once said, “Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.”

And here’s what I’m thinking: I don’t want to be here.

In this smart and intense literary suspense novel, Iain Reid explores the depths of the human psyche, questioning consciousness, free will, the value of relationships, fear, and the limitations of solitude. Reminiscent of Jose Saramago’s early work, Michel Faber’s cult classic Under the Skin, and Lionel Shriver’s We Need to Talk about Kevin, your dread and unease will mount with every passing page” (Entertainment Weekly) of this edgy, haunting debut. Tense, gripping, and atmospheric, I’m Thinking of Ending Things pulls you in from the very first page…and never lets you go.

Wow, this book reflects a different light on solitude and loneliness, it will make you think and feel and reconsider stuff that wasn’t there in your mind. The melancholy, the quietness, the cold in the snow.
    Genius and remarkable.

I really enjoyed the narrator. The ending left me WILDLY confused and I had to google the book to gain clarity. Once I did, it helped immensely put it all in perspective. I wish I could have had the OMG while listening but I missed it.
Overall a good engaging quick listen, had a lot of whaaaaaaat is happening moments.

It was a spooky, eerie read that gets underneath your skin. It really makes you think about the power of loneliness. I went into this book thinking it was just going to be a quick horror read but it is definitely more than that. It just fell a little short for me. It some how felt finished but yet not totally wrapped up. I just wanted a little more depth i think.

The writing is actually really good but the story, after an ambition start, really goes nowhere and just ends really abruptly without resolving all the potentially complex layers of the plot...

It was intriguing all the way to the end. However, it was one of the worst endings I've ever read.

I read it and kind of enjoyed it but literally have no idea what happened. What a strange book.

Better than the Netflix adaptation by Charlie Kaufman, which was not bad at all. This is a great listen.

What was that?! This was by far the most creepiest book I have read in a while. I really did enjoy it. By the end I was scratching my head...I am here for it though. Highly recommend!

There was a lot of rambling that I felt didn’t need to be there. The book was just ok imo.

Honestly it’s not my cup of tea. I was bored for just about the whole book. The school chapters were the funnest. Im not sure how this got picked up by Netflix but I’ll still watch and hope it’s better done on film than written. Wish me luck lol

A very long, slow ride to an extremely unsatisfying conclusion. Anyone who claims this story is "gripping" or "creepy" is actively trying to deceive you or doesn't know yet that things have to happen in fiction to make it interesting. Honestly frustrated with how much time I wasted. I should've considered ending things.

Quick, suspenseful, philosophical, with a surprise twist at the end. You are putting the pieces together for the ending and when it comes it doesn't fail to shock you. I thought it was very well done considering you really don't get to know the characters, which adds a lot to the suspense and buildup. I was glade to have picked it even though it was a suspense thriller and I'm a horror freak.

I kinda figured where this was going pretty early, but I wasn't sure. There was a lot that I thought was going to happen, but didn't. It was a good read, fun even. Not as scary as I was hoping though.

It jumped around too much and went from one thought to the next too quickly. Not very well written and didn’t make sense.

This was an interesting book - I wish I could say that I saw the end coming but I didn't, though I will say there were some things that rang suspicious in my mind from the beginning but I couldn't quite come to the conclusion on my own. This one is definitely a 'thriller' with a bit of a twist at the end. I was really intrigued right off the bat and couldn't put it down. I didn't love the ending much (after the twist is revealed), but it was still a good thriller in its own right.

The first three-quarters of this book is a nicely creepy slow burn of psychological suspense. Then the author loses his nerve. Maybe he feared his friends on the literary playground wouldn’t respect him anymore if he served up a clear conclusion that answered all the questions he had been cultivating in the reader’s mind all this time, and decided to get cute instead, fiddling around with time, and point of view, so that you first wonder if she is an unreliable narrator. Then you wonder if the point of view character was ever even their, and the whole thing becomes so disgusting if I’d had an actual copy I would have thrown it across the room

This book was very well-written and drew me in immediately. There was suspense, even though nothing was overtly creepy or scary. Unsettling things were happening to the main character, a girl who had been dating a guy for a short period, but already knew she had to break up with him. The couple takes a trip to his parent’s farm, and things start to get weird on the long drive, not to mention during the family dinner. The ending to this book, however, really let me down. It happened quickly and didn’t seem to resolve anything; I had to search online to figure out what happened. Once I understood the resolution, I was still pretty disappointed. It had a lot of potential but didn’t deliver.

I have no idea how to review what I just read. I thought I knew what the book was about before I started to read, then as I was reading I realized I was completely off base with my knowledge/expectation, but it was interesting so I kept going and when I got to the end I realized that I actually did know what the book was about, just as I thought I had before I even started. What does all that mean? I have no idea. Here is what I do know: the book draws you in very quickly, it's vague and strange enough that it keeps you turning pages, it's very well written and the author is really great at creating suspense and getting us to understand intense fear. At just over 200 pages I would give it a try if you are on the fence.

I found this book to be exceedingly pretentious, long, and boring. We get it. Memory is unreliable. This was a super convuluted way of saying that. The idea may have been great but the way of telling made the story difficult to follow; but perhaps I'm just that obtuse.

The narration is good and easy to listen to. She has captured the tone.
This is a philosophical thriller novel. Unconventional but chilling and nerve wracking, particularly at the last third of the book. It also made me think… like a lot.

I probably should not have read other people's reviews. They were so hyped about this book. They said it was creepy, eerie, a page-turner that would make you bite your nails, etc. They also talked about the amazing plot twist at the end.
I really can't agree with all that. I was bored out of my mind counting the time remaining of my audiobook. At first, it wasn't that bad. But the more time it passed, the more I felt it. Yes, there's some creepy-ness to it. But I wouldn't go as far as to say it's horror. And this is coming from a huge scaredy-cat, just saying.
About the plot twist...I mean, it is. But it let me feeling like the first half of the book was a bit "for nothing".
Perhaps this is me. This isn't my book. And while I do think I've pretty much understood everything, I don't believe books need multiple re-reads in order for you to understand them. You have one chance, and that's it.

Honestly, I though this book was great. I was surprised for the majority of the book. I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next, there was just something that captivated me. There were enough hints along the way to help me along. Even before I started the book, I had an idea of how it was going to end. My hunch was partly correct, there was enough that I was still shocked. I found it to be a quick and a fun read.

This audio book was a slow start but was engaging once it got going. Spooky and pensive. The main voice actor’s voice is relaxing. Interesting story.
