About this audiobook

Nervous flyer Emma is sitting on a turbulent plane. She really thinks that this could be her last moment. So she starts telling the man sitting next to her all her innermost secrets. How she scans the backs of intellectual books and pretends she's read them.

How she's not sure if she has a G-Spot. How she feels like a fraud at work. How she once threw a troublesome client file in the bin. If ever there was a bare soul, it's hers. She survives the flight, of course, and the next morning the famous boss of the whole mega corporation she works for is coming for a look at the UK branch. As he walks around, Emma looks up and realises it's the man from the plane...

I really enjoyed this book. I like the variety of characters. This was a different type of office romance books. I liked that the story was more focused on their Emma and Jacks relationships are with each other as well as the other characters. I would have loved to get a little more at the end. It felt a little rushed.

I’ve read this book at different stages of my life - I loved it when I was younger, but now that I’m older than the protagonist, this book just grates my gears.... The writing is snappy and fun, some parts are humorous, but the problem is this - the protagonist is a MORON.

I’ve come to realize that Sophie Kinsella doesn’t (or didn’t) know how to write a young, ordinary, professional woman who might be a bit ditzy but is ultimately decent and well-meaning, because Emma just comes across as a complete fool. She displays horribly unprofessional (yet still entitled) behavior, tolerates insults to her face and lies to just about everyone. I know it’s the premise of the book, but there are ways to make a character sympathetic and flawed... but Emma was straight up annoying.

Even the romance was unbelievable - no reason was provided as to why Jack would fall for her, and we know next to nothing about Jack anyway. Aside from the fact that he’s a hotshot millionaire who has a wry American drawl. OK. Overall, most of the characters were cruel (the colleagues & her cousin!), idiotic and downright insufferable at times. This is definitely a book of its time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! And although it was a classic romance novel of “average girl falls for millionaire business man”, and classically plotted as such too, I thought the main characters as well as the side characters were truly realistic, quirky, hilariously funny and had a lot of depth. I loved the easy-to-picture writing style; it’s like ‘listening to a movie’. The narration was well done, with a lot of emotion, making it even more enjoyable to listen to!

The movie was made in 2019 I think. As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its movie. The movie had interesting parts, but I liked the nuances of the book.
