    When eleven-year-old Thyme Owens' little brother, Val, is accepted into a new cancer drug trial, it's just the second chance that he needs. But it also means the Owens family has to move to New York, thousands of miles away from Thyme's best friend and everything she knows and loves. The island of Manhattan doesn't exactly inspire new beginnings, but Thyme tries to embrace the change for what it is: temporary.

    After Val's treatment shows real promise and Mr. Owens accepts a full-time position in the city, Thyme has to face the frightening possibility that the move to New York is permanent. Thyme loves her brother, and knows the trial could save his life-she'd give anything for him to be well-but she still wants to go home, although the guilt of not wanting to stay is agonizing. She finds herself even more mixed up when her heart feels the tug of new friends, a first crush, and even a crotchety neighbor and his sweet whistling bird. All Thyme can do is count the minutes, the hours, and days, and hope time can bring both a miracle for Val and a way back home.

      Thyme and her family have just moved to New York from San Diego and even though she's been telling everyone it is because of her dad's job it's really because of her brother, Val. He was diagnosed with cancer and is enrolled in an experimental treatment. This means Val is really sick one week out of the month with the side effects, Thyme is desperate to keep his sickness a secret so people don't treat her differently, and her parents are overwhelmed with caring for Val. The only thing that is keeping Thyme going is collecting time in her jar. She is determined that if she gets enough time saved up her parents will have to let her do what she wants most of all...I really liked the realistic relationships between all of the characters. The girls behave as I would expect junior high girls to do - especially Emily, and Thyme's innocent self-obsession (while still loving her brother) feels very real, too. Written well so you feel all the different pains Thyme has to endure.

      This is a wonderful middle school novel that deals with the heavy issue of cancer. Eleven year onld Thyme puts on a brave face when her family moves from California to New York City to receive a special drug treatment for her five year old brother. When her parents tell her it is only temporary, Thyme is not sure who to believe. While her parents attention is mostly taken up by her brother, Thyme and her older sister start to unravel and struggle for attention while feeling guilty for their behavior.This was such a well written book that engages readers with it's endearing characters and plot. Thyme seemed to be so real, I could imagine the two of us sitting together in the school cafeteria eating lunch. The book will have you rooting for everyone in Thyme's family. Highly recommended and enjoyable for readers of all ages. I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley.com.

      Author, Melanie Conklin, writes a beautiful tale about a family who moves across the country in hopes that a trial drug will help their five-year-old son win his battle against cancer. Told through the perspective of his sister, Thyme, the family adjusts to their new life in New York City. Thyme struggles with leaving behind her best friend and Grandmother, not wanting to make any close ties with kids at her new middle school because she is hoping to be back in California in just a few months. As a reader, I have a need to connect with the characters. I need the characters to be dynamic, likable and suck me into their lives. Melanie Conklin does just that. She pulls in two very important supporting characters into the life of Thyme and her family. The characters are real, raw, loving, flawed. You will not be disappointed!

      Sweet but not too saccharine. Thyme has to move from California to nyc with her family so her little brother can be in a cancer trial. All she wants is to go home so she earns slips of time by doing chores, hoping to collect enough to earn a trip to see her best friend. Friend, family and neighbor issues all woven together and not a magical happy ending but a realistically hopeful one.
