Up to now, I have only read Maron's series staring Lieutenant Sigrid Harald which features a much grittier atmosphere. While there is sudden violence and a number of murders, the North Carolina setting seems to give an overall atmosphere that is gentler and more romantic.Judge Knott has just married her life long love Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant and life seems to be going well. Then Dwight receives a call from his 8 year old son that he needs him to show up at his school the next morning which entails a several hour drive. Once there he soon discovers that his ex-wife appears to have abandon his son and he begins a search for her. In a short time he finds her murdered and his son is missing and the hunt is on for the murder and kidnapper. A reasonably complicated plot kept this reader turning pages.

I'm not sure I'd want to be driving on the roads in the fictional Colleton County of Deborah Knott. People tend to get shot on the roads while in their cars. That's how this book starts too. But, even though that's how the novel stars, the shooting is not the main mystery in the book. That is what's happened to Joanna, Dwight's ex-wife and their son Cal.It's quite a chase around Joanna's hometown and Dwight and then, of course, Deb search for them. And interwoven is even more family history. This time Joanna's family, as well as Deb's thoughts on her impending step-motherhood.I really liked how Maron wrote Cal. She seemed to write him with the right combination of youth and grownup-ness. On the other hand I was a little bummed that there were fewer court scenes, but, this book was about Dwight and Cal mostly, and Deb was more like a supporting character. And as long as it was only this novel and the series won't turn into the Dwight and Cal show, this was a great novel that definitely moved the characters' stories forward.

This book filled in some gaps in information from my jumping ahead to later books. I do like the voice of the narrator in these Margaret Maron books, as well as the North Carolina setting. I guessed one of the whodunnits earlier than usual, but it was still a good listen in the car.

Deborah and Dwight are involved in two cases. One involves the shooting of a town bully, the other the death of Dwight's ex-wife and the kidnapping of his son Cal. There are some parallels between the two cases yet the case involving Dwight's son is the one that is so engrossing.

There is Civil War history, small town lives and long held secrets that are woven together in a fast moving and wonderful story.

I'm still loving Deborah Knott and new husband Dwight -- it will be interesting to see where things go from here.

This is one of the better books in this series. Deborah's personal life is interesting and central to the story, and the resolution of the mysteries is surprising, yet satisfying.

This is book 12 in the Judge Deborah Knott mystery series. I am continuing my reading and love affair with these books. The story takes place after Deborah's wedding. There is a murder in NC that Dwight starts to investigate, and then he is called away. A hateful man is shot while driving along a stretch of road that was apparently empty of suspects. There was an older woman on the road collecting trash, her report is that there was no one else visible.Dwight gets a mysterious call from his son, Cal, who asks him to come to school the next day for something important. His son lives in another state with Dwight's ex-wife. Dwight goes to Virginia, only to discover he is Cal's show and tell presentation. While there, Dwight finds out that his ex-wife has not been seen since the previous day and their son was home alone the night before. Obviously, Dwight can't leave, so he begins to work with the local police to try to find his ex-wife. Although they are divorced, he knows she is a good mother and would not leave Cal alone voluntarily.Through the story in this book we get to learn about Dwight's ex-wife, her sister, and her mother. We also learn about her job at a local house that once belonged to her family and is now a museum. We learn about her family's past. It ties into the present and the people who are driven to preserve and collect the past, and those who are not above lying, stealing, counterfeiting, blackmail and murder. As the search for her goes on, Dwight becomes a suspect as the ex-husband. At one point his son also goes missing. Deborah then drives from NC to join him and help calm his worry. In NC they continue the investigation into the shooting, and the reader gets to have more time with some of Dwight's detectives.Eventually they discover what has happened to Dwight's ex-wife, why Cal is missing, and finally where he is. The murder in NC is also solved.I enjoyed this book and am actually glad that Cal will be joining them in NC. It takes the pressure off of them having to start having children. I think that would sideline Deborah and diminish the stories. Her step son is 7-10 so he fits into the story without becoming the focus.I also like that in this book, although Dwight and his ex-wife don't see eye to eye, he doesn't demonize her or trash her. Another good one with the setting and the writing and characters.

When local handyman JD Rouse is found dead in his pickup truck with a bullet in his head, the mayhem - and the body count - grows. As his colleagues struggle to solve the case, Dwight launches his own investigation after his eight-year-old son Cal and ex-wife turn up missing from their home in Virginia. Deborah helps as much as she can, but she can't help thinking about forging a relationship with Cal, if he's ever found. All the while, a murderer lurks right under their noses.

Although I like this series from Margaret Maron, this book suffers from the Escalating Personal Consequences Syndrome. No, it is not enough to investigate a crime or solve a mystery. The protagonist has to be personally related to the victim. And the consequences have to be drastic. I hope that no one else in the family has to die in order for these stories to continue. Moreover, I knew the identity of the kidnapper from the minute the kidnapping happened. This makes for a rather unsuspenseful book. The murderer of the first victim is rather apparent also. I can only hope that the next book is rather better than this one.

#12 in the Judge Deborah Knott of North Carolina series. The story takes place just about 1 month exactly from the date that Deborah and Doug Bryant were married (Rituals of the Season). An urgent, odd phone call from his son Cal who lives with Jonna, Doug's ex wife, brings Doug to Virginia, where upon arrival he finds that his ex-wife has disappeared. Soon Cal vanishes as well. Shortly after that distressing event, Jonna's body is found; clearly she has been murdered. With no sign of Cal, Doug--and soon Deborah, who joins him--throws himself into an increasingly frantic search for his missing son with Jonna's murder as a terrifying backdrop. With this installment in the series, Bryant no longer plays a supporting role but is a major character in his own right. In order to deal with this change, Maron chooses to depart from her normal style--mostly Deborah's first person narrative --to one where Doug's third person view, alternates with Deborah's first person narrative. This is Maron's first attempt with the style; it's not as smooth as it could be. Yet it doesn't interfere that much with the story. Maron doesn't seem to have as sure a touch with the cultural details that make her books such a joy to read, although there is one aspect that plays a critical role in the plot. While this is not my favorite book in the series, it's still an extremely enjoyable read, although first-time readers of the series would be much better off starting with any of the previous novels. Highly recommended for fans of Deborah Knott.

First Sentence: The call came through to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Department just after sunset on a chilly Thursday evening in mid-January.Judge Deborah Knott’s new husband, Sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Bryant, has a murder to solve. Troublemaker J.D. Rouse has been fatally shot while driving his truck. But more important to Dwight is that his ex-wife is missing and, shortly thereafter, his son, Cal, as well.I rather liked that this was more Dwight’s story than Deborah’s. It was a nice change. It is definitely the characters that make this story, and this series, work. There’s always that feeling you’ve gone to visit a good friend and her entire family. That said, there were two plots to this story. The first, which was almost a secondary plot, seemed there to involve Deborah in the story and it was she who solved the case in the end. The second, involving Dwight and his son, was the more interesting, emotional and suspenseful story and the one that really kept me involved in the book. It may not have been a “wow” book, but it was a reliably good read. There’s nothing wrong with that.

As they search for the son and mother, questions arise about the family. Another good read a great series.
