About this audiobook

A little book with a big heart—from the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and Anxious People.

“I read this beautifully imagined and moving novella in one sitting, utterly wowed, wanting to share it with everyone I know.” —Lisa Genova, bestselling author of Still Alice

From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry, Britt-Marie Was Here, and Anxious People comes an exquisitely moving portrait of an elderly man’s struggle to hold on to his most precious memories, and his family’s efforts to care for him even as they must find a way to let go.

With all the same charm of his bestselling full-length novels, here Fredrik Backman once again reveals his unrivaled understanding of human nature and deep compassion for people in difficult circumstances. This is a tiny gem with a message you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

I started listening to this book not knowing what it was about, but by the end I felt and understood every spoken and unspoken word of it.

I worked in Alzheimer's and hospice.. This book touches my heart. So many memories and happy tears. "We need to go home soon"... That sentence seems so innocent. Yet carries so much weight to the loved one or caregiver. Thank you sir. For this magical, heartwarming piece of work. ?

My oldest daughter gave me the book "And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer And Longer" (along with several others) for Christmas. Fredrik Backman (famous author of A Man Called Ove) wrote this Novella I read while waiting in the Dental office for my appointment. A little more than 70 pages it offers great insight and compassion for those suffering from dementia and the loss of a spouse. I was tearful throughout the dental appointment causing the hygienist and the Dentist to ask if I was okay. I apologized but must say just replace the names with your own children and grandchildren for a greater appreciation for the time we have with our sanity.

This was, perhaps one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read! The author takes a very difficult subject and gave it the respect and beauty deserved. He sprinkled humor throughout and created such a rich and warm little story. The character development was wonderful and the descriptive language was breathtaking. The description of falling in love (I’m paraphrasing) as the other falling into one’s heart and getting stuck there. Wow! Trust me the author wrote it better. It’s a quick must read or listen. I listened, but am compelled to purchase and have on my shelf. Just wonderful and filled with deep, rich love!

Heartbreakingly beautiful, touched on subjects that are close to my heart, grief, purpose, love and attachment to life. Truly beautifully written. Don’t read, listen to this at work because you will end up crying ??.

So poignant and funny! Fredrick Backman has a way of describing life and people like no one else that I’ve read. This book, in particular, articulates the love of a parent for a child, expressed in the relationship and love for a grandchild.

I know this will be a heart wrenching book to read but I never expected that I would cry for the whole book. Good thing this is just a short story. This becomes one of my most favorite books. Thank you Fredrik Backman for sharing this short story to us.

What a deep and beautiful Novella! Breathtaking <3
As about the narrator, he was pretty good. English is not my first language so I had to listen to it on speed 0.8, and I think that was a great choice. It made the descriptions and all the thoughts mechanisms even better since a lot happened in such a small amount of time.

I was sobbing in the shower by the end of the audiobook. Couldn't stop crying for maybe 15 minutes afterwards. Absolutely gorgeous writing and breathtaking one-liners. Gosh, what a work of art.

My 2nd Backman and it's utterly different from A Man Called Ove. A great kind of different. This is a book u'll read probably in less than one hour, but it'll certainly stay with you for much more than that. One of the books I'd love to read to my kids or grandkids ❤️

And every the way home gets longer and longer (a novella) by Fredrik Backman
    (Scribd)
A very heartbreaking but very realistic about a man taking the backward journey that is dementia and his experience as well as his son and grandson who witness and support him along the journey.
As a person who has a masters in gerontology, I have worked in social services at a nursing home. It was heartbreaking to see those who are going through the journey alone with no family to visit them and it was sad but also heartwarming to see families patiently sitting with their relatives even on days they did not recognize them. It takes a lot of love to do this just like the son and grandson in this book.
