About this audiobook
Gail Gibbons combines clear, simple wording with her signature illustrations to present all the steps involved in building a house. From the architect who draws the plans, through the various types of workers who construct it, to the family who will make the house their home, each aspect is explained with bright colors and diagrams. Children can easily follow along as construction begins at the ground level with surveyors, describing the jobs of carpenters and plumbers. The many tools used to complete each task are explained, ultimately showing how all the workers' efforts come together to build a whole house from basement to roof, both inside and outside.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a fun book by Gail Gibbons that takes us through the steps of building a house. Of course it simplifies it, but it's written for the preschool/kindergarten ageset. Unfortunately all the characters are white, but there are women involved in the process, which was a step forward in 1990. The book takes us through the process with all the various workers: contractor, surveyor, heavy equipment operators, foundation builders, well drillers, septic crew carpenters, plumers, masons, electrictians, heating specialists, drywallers, painters, and landscapers.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A book on how to construct a wood frame house. It goes into detail on the crew involved in constructing a house and their duties in building it. It also provides examples of simple shelters of the past for children to compare and contrast. Another important thing Gibbons does is incorporate new subject specific vocabulary, like "form" and "roof rafters".
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This book is an introduction to how, what, who is involved when it comes to building houses. This book introduces students to the different professions that are involved with building a house. The book shows the variety of materials that are needed to build a house. I would only use this book with very young students. This book could potentially be a way that you could help students connect the engineering design process in class to the real world. Ultimately, I do not think I would use this book in my classroom, due to the disengaging material.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A book that teaches us the basics of the complex world of building a house. With several different features that may or may not be in a child's own personal home, it can help to teach how we all may live very differently.
