About this audiobook

“A quick and exciting read.” —School Library Journal

When Lucas Walker inexplicably recovers from a terminal illness, everyone is astonished—except for his girlfriend Emma, who never gave up hope. However, as friends and family celebrate the miracle, Emma becomes alarmed: Lucas has changed. He speaks haltingly, can’t recall past events, and even his own dog doesn’t recognize him. Emma begins to suspect something is terribly wrong. What happened to the Lucas she loved? Does his strange behavior have something to do with the shooting light that fell into Lucas’s backyard the night he recovered?

As the two set off on a road trip in search of the truth, the journey takes an unexpected turn. First they’re shot at by unknown enemies and then helped by unlikely allies. Before long, Emma and Lucas are plunged into a desperate life or death race against time.

Packed with intrigue and emotion, From a Distant Star is a riveting novel about loyalty and the power of love.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. From a Distant Star was a good book. It’s a fast and enjoyable read. I didn’t want to put it down. I flew through the first 70 or so pages and probably would have read it in one sitting if I hadn’t been getting a headache. I just wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next.I did have some problems with it. Some things just seemed too easy or predictable. Plus there is this whole thing about Emma never having kids because her boyfriend is infertile. I mean there are options out there. There is more than one way you can become a parent. You can still have kids someday.Other than those little issues, I thought it was a good book and I can’t wait to read more by Karen McQuestion.

In some ways, this book reminded me in many ways of the 1984 movie Starman—which I quite liked. While sometimes predictable, this story was enjoyable. There was just enough dramatic tension to keep things moving along, and one “duh” moment of problem solving for me that I really should have figured out myself. My biggest objection to this book is that it taps into a pet peeve that has been growing over the last couple of years: the whole recurring “finding your one true love while still in your teens” idea. To be honest, I think that the constant preaching of this idea in so many books that I otherwise enjoy is damaging to our young women. One statistic I found says that only about 17% of people marry their high school sweetheart, but so much of our young adult fiction is showing girls that that guy they meet in high school is THE ONE. It puts a lot of pressure on girls, unnecessarily. (Trust me, as the mother of a very single 25-year-old daughter, I know this.)Because of this bias, I found Emma’s constant musing on how she and Lucas are going to be together forever, and they’re SO MUCH IN LOVE to be grating. Otherwise, the characters are well-drawn and believable. I live in a world of teens, and Emma’s voice rings true, as does Eric’s.All in all, this is a fun YA thriller-esque read.Possible objectional material: Gunfire. Reference to teenage making out and almost having sex. Threatening situations. Disobeying parental authority. If there were any curse words, I don’t remember them, so maybe a couple of the mildest ones.Who would like this book: Science fiction fans, teens, probably girls more than boys, thanks to Emma’s. Constant. Talk. About being in love with Lucas. Enough already! Approximate Lexile: 930Thank you, NetGalley, for the read!

Title: From a Distant StarAuthor: Karen McQuestionPublication date: May 19th 2015Series or Standalonesynopsis from goodreads:Seventeen-year-old Emma was the only one who hadn’t given up on her boyfriend, Lucas. Everyone else—his family, his friends, his doctors—believed that any moment could be his last. So when Lucas miraculously returns from the brink of death, Emma thinks her prayers have been answered. As the surprised town rejoices, Emma begins to question whether Lucas is the same boy she’s always known. When she finds an unidentifiable object on his family’s farm—and government agents come to claim it—she begins to suspect that nothing is what it seems. Emma’s out-of-this-world discovery may be the key to setting things right, but only if she and Lucas can evade the agents who are after what they have. With all her hopes and dreams on the line, Emma sets out to save the boy she loves. And with a little help from a distant star, she might just have a chance at making those dreams come true.-----------My Rating : 2 starsEEEEKK!!! Isn’t that cover just gorgeous? And the summary…so action-packed and exciting!! But the book? Ehhhh---------What I liked:THE CHARACTERS. Especially Scout!! He was so adorable and innocent :3 like a little teeny weeny baby :)THE COVER. Purple and blue and turquoise?!? ALL MY FAVORITE COLORS IN THE SAME COVER?!?! love-------What I didn’t like:THE WRITING. The storyline was interesting and all, but I didn’t really enjoy the writing style. Maybe it’s just me (which it most likely is), but I thought it was awkward in the beginning and it improved throughout the book. Anyways, that’s just me. What do I know, right?THE PLOT. It was so cliche. Lol I think everything is cliche but this one was especially. I enjoyed the plot, but I knew what was going to happen and that just kinda ruined it a little.THE ENDING. *deep breath + SPOILER ALERT* I wish Lucas died. Idk, maybe I’m emo or something, I just really enjoy books with main characters that die, like Allegiant. They’re just so much more interesting than those happy-happy ending ones. This is only my opinion, but I thought the ending was a little too happy. I mean, I wish something would’ve gone wrong and Lucas would’ve been left crippled or something. Just my opinion. HAHAH I sound evil >:-)-------Good book overall, it has a bunch of great ratings on goodreads, so you should check it out. After it comes out ofc!
