About this audiobook

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Known is the fifth book in Bone Secrets, the multimillion-copy bestselling series.

After a brutal snowstorm in the Cascade Mountains, Chris Jacobs discovers two things he never expected to see: the charred shell of a cabin, and Gianna Trask and her sixteen-year-old daughter huddled in an SUV, having barely escaped from their burning vacation rental.

Still scarred from a childhood ordeal, Chris knows there’s something sinister about the scene—it’s the stench of burned flesh.

Forced to wait out the blizzard in their rescuer’s retreat, medical examiner Gianna Trask wonders if her hidden past has finally caught up with her. When a body is found in the destroyed cabin’s ashes and a forest ranger is brutally murdered, both Gianna and Chris must confront their secrets if they want to escape the violent threat lurking outside.

In the fifth book in the Bone Secrets series, Kendra Elliot leads readers on a dangerous, twisting journey of two lives forever changed by a fiery snowstorm in the mountains.

Known is book 5 in Kendra Elliot's romantic suspense series Bone Secrets. It can be read as a stand alone but Buried (book 3) provides the background to Chris' past so I'd probably read that one first. Chris is the hero of this installment. He comes across Gianna and her teenage daughter whose vacation cabin burnt down. Stranded in a snowstorm in Chris' isolated mountain cabin, they soon realize that the fire was no accident. But who would want to harm a mother and her daughter? As with all the other books in the series, this was a great mix of suspenseful mystery and romance though a bit heavier on the action and suspense this time. There is never a dull moment in these books and the author has a great talent for making you feel the characters' emotions. Some of the revelations and developments approached the over-the-top unbelievable territory. But I love all the characters, old and new, so it was still a very enjoyable read. A great series for fans of romantic suspense.I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The action never stops from the moment Chris Jacobs finds Gianna Trask and her daughter Violet huddled in their SUV outside the burned remains of the cabin they rented. Chris is used to being alone and likes it but he is also quick to offer his help to Gianna. Both Chris and Gianna have had side roles in the other Bone Secrets novels and it is great to let them star in this one. Chris is still dealing with the trauma that he faced when he was kidnapped as a twelve year old and held captive and tortured for two years until he managed to escape. He's always on the alert and doesn't connect with many other people. He has a close relationship with his brother Michael and his sister-in-law Jamie because they were the ones who pushed and forced him to connect with them. He also has a close relationship with his son Brian but is worried now that he's not homeschooling him and he's interacting more with the outside world. During most of this story, Brian is on vacation in California with his grandparents.Gianna has just accepted a job as a medical examiner in Portland and removed herself and her daughter from New York. Both Gianna and Violet are still adjusting to the loss of her husband's mother. Violet is unhappy about the move both because she feels that she's losing the place where she made memories with her grandmother who was her primary caregiver and she's losing connection with her friends. Gianna was afraid that Violet was falling in with the wrong crowd. Still, in this whole story, it is clear that Violet loves her mother. The main action of this story has an unknown stalker targeting Gianna and Violet because he believes that she has a flash drive that contain information that is very damaging to his family. He's brutal and a screw up and leaves a trail of bodies behind him. Chris, Gianna and Violet are almost killed on a few different occasions. The story has a lot to do with hidden family secrets and finally confronting them. Chris begins to be able to share some of his childhood experiences with Gianna and Gianna learns that there is more to her traumatic past than she could remember. This was an excellent, suspenseful addition to the Bone Secrets series which will delight readers of the series and fans of romantic suspense in general.

Known was a good but not great story about Chris Jacobs who had been kidnapped as a child and kept by someone called the Ghostman for two years before escaping. As an adult, he has meet Gianna Trask when the cabin where she and her daughter are staying burns to the ground. This is just the first in several incidents that lead Chris and Gianna into mystery, danger, and romance. Just when the two wounded souls think they have found some peace, Gianna's daughter, Violet is kidnapped and she and Chris must find her before it is too late.
The characters were likable and the mystery was somewhat intersting, but the story just lacked depth. I also found it hard to connect with the characters. This is the first book in the Bone Secrets series that I haven't loved.

Chris Jacobs has finally found some peace after years of living in fear. When he stumbles across a burned out cabin in the woods and rescues Gianna Trask and her teenage daughter, Chris realizes that something sinister is at work. Can he and Gianna confront their darkest secrets in order to survive?

Series note: It is not necessary to read the entire series prior to this book as most of the stories are standalone. However, book #3, Buried, should be read first for the backstory on Chris's traumatic past.

The first half of the story is well constructed with several compelling twists and a sweet slow burn romance. Unfortunately, the initial build up ultimately devolves, and the last few chapters are rushed and anti-climactic as if Elliot needed to wrap it all up quickly.

While not all that original, the mystery is intriguing and the chapters from the villain's POV set a suitably malicious and creepy tone. This does not last, however, as his actions at the end are not consistent with his characterization throughout.

Similarly, the romance begins well as Chris and Gianna have lovely chemistry and the emotion between them builds slowly but surely. Then it all comes to a jarring halt and their HEA is presented as fait accompli with no connection between the beginning and the end.

In sum, Known is a solid ending to the Bone Secrets series, which has been entertaining overall. Looking forward to continuing with the spin-off series focusing on Detective Mason Callahan (who was sorely missed in this installment).

Known by Kendra Elliot is a 2016 Montlake publication. This fifth installment in the 'Bone Secrets' series gives Chris Jacobs top billing, when he meets Gianna Trask and her teenage daughter, Violet, under extreme circumstances. When Gianna’s cabin retreat catches fire, she and her daughter barely make it out alive. Chris also happens to be at his cabin at that time and brings the ladies to safety. But, he knows right away the burned-out shell of the cabin will reveal a very serious crime and that Gianna and Violet could be in danger.Sure enough, it quickly becomes crystal clear that Gianna is a target…. But why? I always enjoy Kendra Elliot’s romantic suspense novels, and this one is no exception. I love Chris Jacobs and was pleased to see him meet a kindred spirit in Gianna. The story is fast paced, intense, suspenseful and emotional. The plotting is tight and unfortunately it captures the underbelly and greed of human nature all too well. It’s also a poignant family drama, with a bittersweet tone to it. The action grabbed my attention right away and kept me riveted by building the suspense with perfect pacing, until it reaches a race against time drama that kept me glued to the pages. The author did a terrific job of creating characters I could care about, and balanced the romance with the suspense exactly the way I like it. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will keep my eyes peeled for the next installment in this series!! 4 stars*Kindle Unlimited

4 "Past Tragedies Unite" Stars for the story and narration! If you're like me, and love a good old-fashioned style suspense story with an overlay of romance to throw a little spice into the mystery, then you will not want to miss Known. Although this is the 5th book in the Bone Secrets Series, there is no need to have read or listened to the prior books as both the suspense and romantic sub-plots are fully contained within this audiobook. Further complementing this thought provoking suspense title is the above-average narration rendered by Tanya Eby, making this title a natural choice to choose in audiobook format. Chris Jacobs knows what it is like to survive in the cross hairs of a killer. Having survived two horrific years at the hands of a serial killer, he learned many tricks to stay alive in unfathomable circumstances. So when Chris comes across Gianna Trask and her teenage daughter in the Cascade Mountains having just nearly escaped death under what appears to be suspicious circumstances, he knows he's stumbled onto a dangerous situation and is determined to see them to safety.Gianna is no stranger to death (being a medical examiner) or tragedy (having lost her parents in a terrible accident when she was a child). She grew up with her uncle and he raised her to be tenacious and strong woman--personality traits that will come in handy as this story evolves. As Chris and Gianna are forced to first wait out the storm in his cabin and then flee imminent perile they begin to bond and their shared tragic pasts as well as their individual synergistic natures draw each to the other. But will Chris be able to keep Gianna safe, much less pursue a happily ever after with her, with all the scars that no doubt remain from each of their terrible pasts?Tanya Eby delivers a talented performance in Known. Although Ms. Eby generally produces only slightly nuanced differences between her characters of the same age and gender, this style worked well for this story which had few overlapping characters of a similar gender or age. I also had no trouble distinguishing Chris from Gianna, and didn't need to rely on dialogue tags. In fact, I was pleasantly pleased that Ms. Eby's voice for Chris sounded genuinely masculine, a feat that sometimes is difficult for female narrators. Ms. Eby is also a well seasoned narrator with many titles under her belt leading to her natural affinity with delivery at an adequate pace to suit the mood of the scene being enacted. From the fast-paced action scenes, to the more introspective ones and suspense-filled moments, Ms. Eby adequately brought the scene to life in such a way that her portrayal enhanced the story's effect. All in all, if you're looking for an action-filled, suspense title with a mild romance overlay, then I highly recommend giving Known a listen.
