About this audiobook

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden.

In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees…and a collection of precious “butterflies”—young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

When the garden is discovered, a survivor is brought in for questioning. FBI agents Victor Hanoverian and Brandon Eddison are tasked with piecing together one of the most stomach-churning cases of their careers. But the girl, known only as Maya, proves to be a puzzle herself.

As her story twists and turns, slowly shedding light on life in the Butterfly Garden, Maya reveals old grudges, new saviors, and horrific tales of a man who’d go to any length to hold beauty captive. But the more she shares, the more the agents have to wonder what she’s still hiding…

Dot Hutchison

Dot Hutchison is the author of the Collector series (The Butterfly Garden, The Roses of May, The Summer Children, and The Vanishing Season) as well as A Wounded Name, a young adult novel based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Hutchison loves thunderstorms, mythology, history, and movies that can and should be watched on repeat. She has a background in theater, Renaissance-festival living chessboards, and free falls. She likes to think that Saint George regretted killing that dragon for the rest of his days. For more information on her current projects, visit www.dothutchison.com.

I really enjoyed this book, but I honestly do not know if I would recommend it. The book is graphic and disturbing, so you should be aware of that before delving into it. The novel was well written and I could easily see it going to the movie screen in the future. The story-line is honestly fascinating. The details that Hutchinson chose to include and exclude about each of the characters is well-chosen. I found myself making a future for some of the characters, which is always a good sign. I really connected with both the "good guys" and the "bad guys" in the novel. I love mysteries and this was definitely a mystery until the very end.

This book is very well written and the voice overs really give this story life. Loved the book and at no point did it stagnate or feel forced to read. Highly reccomend to anyone who likes the darker stories

Great story. Harrowing, especially when you're a woman or a parent of a daughter. Lost a star for the male reader (audiobook version). His cadence didn't match the scenes, especially when reading Maya's dialogue. She wasn't some snappy sarcastic happy go lucky girl down on her luck, she was a traumatized victim. The female reader did beautifully, however, probably because she is a woman and can understand what it would be like to a butterfly.

I never write reviews, but I think this is the fastest I've ever listened to/read a book. I just couldn't put it down once I started. It was SO good. I listened to it during the day and went to bed with the book to read at night. Even with a full time job and something of a life, I was done in 2 days. So looking forward to the rest of the series and diving into this author. Great book!

This book was haunting and gruesome. Not in the classic “gore” idea, though. The brutality of being kidnapped and displaced is so vividly expressed in this book

Given the subject matter I didn't expect this book to be so deadly boring. It's basically a total snorefest punctuated by scenes of gratuitous sexual abuse. Like, 70% Yawn, 30% wish I could scrub those images out of my brain. I wouldn't read another book by this author.

????????????????????????????? Will never be able to look at a butterfly as a normal person would! Great story!

It was a pretty lame book. The twist at the end came out of left field and didn’t make much sense.

It can be graphic, but it was a gripping book. The characters were written surprisingly well. It made me laugh, cry and curse. I cant wait to finish the others in the series.

Was written well but boring. For a story with such an interesting premise it failed to live up to it. Honestly the fact it's a interview starting with the aftermath is disappointing and takes away all suspense.
It's not worth reading and I can't see how the author manged to think of a 2nd book.

Compelling story but the goal was unclear. Didn’t understand what it was building towards, and when we got there it felt like a lot of darkness and graphic shock to get to something underwhelming. Was ultimately left feeling sad and unfulfilled.

I really enjoyed this. It poses an unusual take on the ‘serial killer’.

Couldn’t even finish this. The male reader chose to deliver each and every line in the cheesiest way possible. Also the victim blaming sprinkled throughout was very off-putting.

Please just give this book at shot! It’s so gripping and there were honestly some parts that made me hellaciously uncomfortable. Great read though.

This story had so much potential and I’ve never been so disappointed in a book. The ending was so far fetched and unbelievable, especially when they revealed that Mayas former roommate was an escaped butterfly. The interactions with Maya and the officers annoyed me too, the childish banter just wasn’t plausible.

This book was dark and twisty in a way that I was not expecting and am not sure how to feel about. It was definitely a wild ride, and there was some Wonder character development. But once again, dark and twisty with many many triggers. I think I will listen to the rest in the series at some point but not for a long while

The over all concept was interesting. However, it's drags on a little too long. Making the reader feel its leading towards some epic ending with a possibly good twist. Only the end actually was boring and the twist was far-fetched.

God did i love this weird book... it started good and i loved the two different POV and jeeeeeeeeeez that twist in the end had me O.O
it's a good thriller story, written well and it engages you from the very start so you keep wanting to know what's "next"
guess i will be continuing with this series... soon hopefully.

The book is well written and has some good imagery but it also feels needlessly edgy in it's plot and at times shocking for the sake of being shocking. At times the plot reminded me of creepy pasta or fanfiction in that way.

A really gritty story that was almost unsettling at times but overall a good story. I would have given it four stars if there was a little more happening throughout the story. Also I didn’t really like the big reveal at the end I feel like it kinda ruined the rest of the book for me. However, I am interested in reading the rest of the series.

Weird and good. Trigger warning, lots of r*pe. This book can be gratuitous at times, but the women are so fleshed out and full of life. Their stories had me in tears. They leave you sad, angry and frustrated but hopeful. Definitely worth the read

Wow what a story! Serial killer, Stockholm Syndrome, all told in an FBI interview type process. Quite engaging

The premise is just too fantastical. The moving walls of this huge monstrosity of a compound on someone’s property. It’s just too much really. And the ending twist made absolutely no sense at all.

This story was interesting and I appreciated the pace at which it was told up until the reveal of their escape, which I felt was rushed.

I would have preferred also if it was just the female narrator. Two narrators were a bit confusing, especially when the male is doing the dialogue of both the detectives and Maya and then it switches back to Maya. The tone of the character changed with both narrators.

I really loved this story. The end was a little too kismet for me for such a dark book, but not enough to not give 5 stars still. I was hooked!! EDIT-also just found out this is apart of a series, so that may help my thoughts on the ending lol starting now!
