      My only complaint about the audiobook is that the narrator tends to read every sentence with an upswing at the end - almost as if a questioned is being asked. A bit annoying. The subject matter is well written, albeit tragic.

      I watched this case on ID. John Glatt is a good writer though he misses some things, like the fact that Lacy moved with Garnet into a new age community which is a pretty important part of the story. The narrator pronounces his name wrong like "Garnette" which is annoying but the story as a whole is engaging and interesting though extremely disturbing and at times hard to listen to. It's beyond unbelievable how a mother could put her child through what poor Garnet went through. As a mother it was difficult to listen to this. I swore at the phone many times while listening to her despicable acts. She deserves a fate worse than death.

      This was a very well researched and well written book. The only thing I felt wasn't covered enough was the fact the mother had an actual internet blog that she kept updated frequently. So while she lived on facebook she was also writhing blog posts about Garnett...the entire blog was devoted to him and his ongoing medical conditions. Many people do this so that in itself isn't unusual but I wonder how much evidence was missed. There are a few things that really bothered me about the investigation. How do the police conducting a search NOT remove that obviously recently used feed bag, feed pump and supplies when they know this is a medical case involving deliberate poisoning?? How can they effectively do investigations if they don't understand how basic medical equipment works? Had the teacher not mentioned the video monitoring for his EEG this girl would have walked free. Why did the hospital not IMMEDIATELY surrender my those videos? They didn't even TELL the police about them! I have no doubt this troubled woman killed her son but it is very concerning that the hospital wasn't forthcoming. Had the Dr not told the cops "you are looking for Salt" who knows what they would have seized?! The other thing that is concerning is that they made a big deal about Garnet's g button being open right after the seizures began again in the hospital, the nurse noticed it and told mom. Mom was unconcerned because that is nothing to be concerned about. I am very familiar with g buttons and the process of dealing with them and I can tell you it being open is not a big deal at all unless it is a leaky button...which it obviously was not. Kids his age often catch it on their clothes, playing etc and it could open. It is a one way valve so contents don't leak unless the valve had been damaged through general use or being forced to turn the wrong way when fitting the extension on for feeds with a pump or syringe. My issue is simple. When you work with g buttons you know to introduce anything via that gb you must have the extension set which has a end that fits the cone shaped tip tubing that runs from a feed bag OR a large tipped syringe. There is also a small flip open port to give meds with a small syringe. Bottom line is without a feeding bag or a syringe, large or small, there is NO way to use that g button.
      I think it is evident she did it but I am astounded they were not checking his residual (amount of free flowing fluid from his stomach) routinely and did not empty his stomach using that g button once it was apparent something had to have been introduced to him via his gb. It is an pretty easy process and I have emptied a stomach of a child with nausea using a special feeding bag system that allows the fluid to flow into a closed circuit system and then slowly be reintroduced either by gravity or on a pump. Or they could literally use a 60 ml syringe to manually remove it via the extension set. Only certain syringes fit directly in the g button. And they are quite small. I believe 10ml is the maximum so we know she had to use the extension set.
      There is still the question of what she mixed and how it was not video recorded. I do wonder if that water bottle wasn't used to transport the salt/water mix to the hospital in those bags she told Uma she needed to pack.
      Another concern is the Dr shared with an incoming Dr that he was concerned the mother was causing his illnesses yet did nothing else. They allowed her constant contact with her child, did not put them in a video monitored room, did not inform the nursing staff of their suspicions...they did nothing. They also did not report their concerns to the authorities until after his death. They are mandated reporters. They failed him. Had they removed him from his mothers care he may still be alive.
      That being said medical errors do occur frequently. So if find their timing in reporting their concerns suspicious. They waited til he was dead. So they let her do whatever she wanted then reported her. Something wrong with that scenario.
      There is mention of them introducing a saline iv which made me pause. Later they said dextrose. One is sugar and one is salt. Saline is not harmful but to a child that already has a high salt count it seems like a odd choice..but I am not a Dr and don't have experience with saline iv's so don't want to speculate too much.
      There is a lot of questions here. I feel like this mother is definitely guilty of medical abuse and probably does suffer from muchausen by proxy just based on her child's medical history and her history of attention seeking behavior but did she kill him...I think she caused his death yes. But I don't know that it was intentional. Why would she kill him...she got more sympathy from him being sick than she would him being dead. I am not so naive to think that hospitals don't make errors. It happens all the time. There is just a lot to really look at here many questions that should have been answers were not.

      Well researched book about a mother with Munchausen by proxy and the eventual death of her 5 year old son. The author interviewed the mother who is in prison, friends and relatives. Also shows a lot of her social medias posts. This is a very sad story but an interesting book to read.
