About this audiobook

A riveting legal thriller from Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of My Sister’s Grave.

In San Francisco’s seamy Tenderloin district, a teenage street hustler has been murdered in a shelter for boys. And the dedicated priest who runs the struggling home stands accused. But despite damning evidence that he’s a killer—and worse—Father Thomas Martin stands by his innocence. And attorney Peter Donley stands with him.

For three years Donley has cut his legal teeth in his uncle’s tiny, no-frills firm, where people come before profits. Just as Donley is poised to move on to a lucrative dream job, the shocking case lands in his lap, and he must put his future on hold while putting his courtroom skills to the test. But a ruthless DA seeking headlines and a brutal homicide cop bent on vengeance have their own agendas. Now, as he unearths the dirty secrets surrounding the case, Donley must risk his neck to save his client’s life…and expose the face of true evil.

Another good one from Mr Dugoni. I didn’t know what to expect after The Tracey Crosswaite books and this is very different but still very good.

This was a fairly interesting whodunnit set in San Franciso where a priest is accused of murder. It's a very convoluted story with many characters; some of which I got confused; hence the 3 stars.

Great for this genre. I appreciated the lack of objectification of women.

The first few chapters didn't grab me but once it got going, I didn't want to put it down. I think I liked this one more than any of the Tracy Crosswhite books. The plot wasn't what I thought it would be and I enjoyed the unfolding of the mystery. I liked the characters quite a bit and there were plenty of them.

This is my quick, "just finished this and need to get some thoughts down" review. The more detailed review is on C-Spot Reviews: http://reviews.c-spot.net/archives/5749.

Not great literature but a real page turner....if audio books had pages. Seventh Canon is a story about injustice and corruption, always a fascinating subject. It features our hero, a ham and egg lawyer in San Francisco working against a corrupt politician and a dirty cop. Lots of action. I liked the read.

A good read, without a lot of distasteful language and sexual themes being acted out. Of course, the required sad backstory and resultant inability to trust even those closest to him pads the pages and leads to the dramatic climax. This is the first book I have read by Dugoni. I like this author.

Fast paced, heart racing, elevated respiration rate – Dugoni does it again and again. A great story inhabited by interesting characters, some good, some awfully bad, all believable. Story never flags and sometimes runs away at supersonic speed. A murder, a mystery, a legal lesson, a little naivete, a lot of political savvy, some laugh out loud moments, some imparting of practical wisdom. Some very great writing.

I received an advance copy of this book through Netgalley. I appreciate the opportunity from Netgalley and Robert Dugoni to read and review this book.

The 7th Canon by Robert Dugoni begins when Father Martin is accused of killing a young boy from his shelter. However, this is just the beginning of Father Martin's troubles. Bring in one very hot-headed cop and things just get worse. Father Martin eventually hires Peter Donley to be his defense against his murder charge. Donley sacrifices his family and life in order to prove that Father Martin is not a cold blooded killer. How far will one attorney go to stand up for his client and find out who actually killed this young boy? Will he end up losing his own life in the pursuit of justice?

I really enjoyed this novel. This is the first book I have read that was written by Robert Dugoni and I will certainly be reading more of his books. This was a very satisfying read and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I will be recommending this book to friends, family, and anyone else who is interested in an edge of your seat thriller.

I've seen mixed reviews for this book. It seems you either really liked it or you really didn't....I really did. I found the characters of Peter Donley and Frank Ross to be ones that you could really root for and the character of Dixon Connor to be one you could truly hate...but it took all of them to make a first rate story. I have read Robert Dugoni's courtroom series featuring David Sloan and thought that this one would fit right in with that series...if only Dugoni had had more of the courtroom drama that he is so good at writing. Overall it was an excellent read and it will appeal to readers that like novels with lots of action and a seemingly impossible mystery to solve.

The 7th canon means, “A lawyer should represent a client zealously within the bounds of the law.” Even a guilty person is entitled to defense. But it is pretty tough when the accused is a priest who runs a homeless shelter and the victim is a tortured, murdered child found in the shelter. So is the priest guilty, or just deserving a decent defense? This book engaged me throughout. It moved along at a good pace. There was, of course, violence, but certainly not the most graphic I've read about. There are powerful people, powerful secrets, and powerful enemies. The writing is straightforward, not flowery, not over the top. While I probably won't remember this book a month from now, it was an entertaining, engaging story for me.I read this as an e-book through my Kindle Unlimited membership.

I received a free advance e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Wow! Robert Dugoni has done it again. A great legal thriller full of twists and turns. The action never quits. There is a DA with an agenda, a cop bent on vengeance, and a very dedicated though unconventional priest that is accused of murder. If I ever get in deep legal doo-doo I hope I will be able to find a lawyer like Peter Donley who is willing to risk everything for his client. What a great character. This is a very well-written thriller with excellent character development and an amazing plot. I couldn’t put the book down; just had to keep on reading to see what would happen next. This is another keeper by Robert Dugoni and well worth the read.

THE 7TH CANON is a pleasant change. It is not part of a series; it is a standalone novel that Robert Dugoni has had around for a long time; he wrote the first draft 20 years ago. That made some things out of date in 2016. So he set the story in 1987.A priest who ran a home for homeless boys in San Francisco is accused of murdering one of those boys. His lawyer decides that the only way to a successful defense is to prove the priest’s innocence and find the real murderer. Although I was pretty sure who the real murderer was early on, it was still fun following the lawyer’s investigation. Turns out, some of the characters he interacts with are based on real people in Dugoni’s life.I’ve read several Dugoni novels. None has impressed me as much as the last book he wrote in his David Sloane series, THE CONVICTION. I’ve been watching for another to grab me like that did. His Tracy Crosswhite series wasn’t doing it, so I welcomed THE 7TH CANON. But, although it’s good, it’s not that good. Dugoni needs to return to David Sloane. The publisher Thomas & Mercer sent me this book at my request.

New to Robert Dugoni, but I'll have to find his other stories to see if they are one-half as good. Fast paced, well drawn characters, plenty of action all lead to a quick and entertaining read that draws you in and makes you want to finish one more chapter. The plot is explained by other reviewers; so I'll just content myself with saying you could look long and hard and do worse for an entertaining read. My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the Download.

Canon 7 of the ABA moral code of responsibility states “a lawyer should represent his client zealously within the bounds of the law”. Attorney Peter Donley takes it to heart but puts his own spin on just how far he should go to save his client.Father Tom Martin runs a shelter for troubled boys. When one is found murdered, the DA wastes no time naming him as the killer. Peter works with his Uncle Lou who has made a career out of defending the disadvantaged. But when Lou ends up in hospital, the case falls to Peter & he’s quickly swept up in a conspiracy of lies, revenge & family secrets. There’s something fishy about the case & Peter hires PI Frank Ross to help with the investigation. Ross used to be a cop & knows all the players well. But there’s another layer to the story involving powerful men who will do anything to keep the truth buried & Peter is soon way out of his comfort zone. The story is set in 1987 but was written in 1996. I enjoyed this author’s Tracy Crosswhite series & it’s interesting to note the evolution of his style. Initially I found some of the other characters more compelling than Peter but as the story progressed & he began to colour outside the lines a bit, I became a fan.The addition of Frank Ross is a turning point & it’s the relationship between these 2 men that spurs the plot forward. On the outside, they couldn’t be more different. But they share a similar code of ethics & desire to uncover the truth that puts them in synch & I enjoyed their interaction. Each has a rich back story that is slowly revealed & informs their motivations. Strong secondary characters, believable dialogue & atmospheric settings add to the story. It’s a smart, fast paced legal thriller that begs the question……soooo…..Mr. Dugoni, there are 8 more canons in the ABA’s code. When can we expect the next one?
