About this audiobook

852 AD. For centuries, the Vikings have swept out of the Norse countries and fallen on whatever lands they could reach aboard their longships, and few could resist the power of their violent onslaught. They came at first to plunder, and then to settle, an encroachment fiercely resisted where ever they went. Such was the case in the southern lands of Ireland. En route to the Viking longphort there, known as Dubh-linn, Thorgrim Night Wolf and Ornolf the Restless stumble across an Irish ship that carries aboard it a single item: a crown. The Vikings eagerly snatch the prize, unaware of its significance to the people of Ireland and the power granted to the king who wears it. Soon the Norsemen are plunged into the violence and intrigue of Medieval Ireland, where local kings fight with each other and with the invaders from the north for rule of the island nation. With enemies at every hand, and loyalties as fickle as the weather, Thorgrim must lead his men, the white invaders, the Fin Gall, in the fight of their lives, with both Irish and Dane eager to see them dead.

I enjoyed this now than any other historical novel of the Viking era I've read. The author has woven suspense with historically accurate information and created a historical novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

Great book ! I was sucked in very early on, and at the end was wanting more. I was super excited to find that there are 5 or 6 more books in the series. I'm off to listen to book 2 now !
    Great Viking Book !

This was historical fiction as it should be. Nelson has a knack for penning characters that are both intriguing and believable. Thorgrim Night-Wolf is a fascinating character to me, a warrior who is world-weary, yet still powerful and has an obvious love for his son, Harald, who has gone a-viking with him to Ireland. I won't spoil the plot by summarizing it here, but it's a cracking fun read and worth the time of anyone who enjoys Vikings or somewhat militaristic historical fiction. It's more than just battles and adventure, though -- he does a good job of exploring his characters' thoughts and motivations. A stand-out book for me.
