    Springtime in Mississippi is abloom with beauty, but the library's employees are too busy worrying to stop and smell the flowers. The new library director, Oscar Reilly, is a brash, unfriendly Yankee who's on a mission to cut costs-and his first targets are the archive and the rare book collection.

    As annoying as a long-overdue book, Reilly quickly raises the hackles of everyone on staff, including Charlie's fiery friend Melba, whom Reilly wants to replace with someone younger. But his biggest offense is declaring all four-legged creatures banned from the stacks.

    With enemies aplenty, the suspect list is long when Reilly's body is discovered in the library. But things take a turn for the worse when a threatening e-mail throws suspicion on Melba.

    Charlie is convinced that his friend is no murderer, especially when he catches sight of a menacing stranger lurking around the library. Now he and Diesel will have to read between the lines, before Melba is shelved under "G" for guilty . . .

      No Cats Allowed by Miranda James is the seventh book in A Cat in the Stacks Mystery series. There is a new interim director at the Athena College Library. Unfortunately, Oscar Reilly is going out of his way to alienate everyone on the staff including Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat, Diesel. When Charlie is asked to leave Diesel at home, Charlie decides to take a leave of absence. But then Oscar Reilly turns up dead in the basement (crushed with shelving). When Charlie's friend and co-worker, Mabel Gilley is accused of the crime, Charlie starts investigating. Then Charlie is asked to step in as the new interim director. Charlie may not last long on the job when someone tries to put him out of commission. Can Charlie figure out who the killer is and stay out of harm’s way? I enjoyed reading No Cats Allowed. No cats Allowed may be the seventh book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but I will definitely be reading them now. I liked the characters in the book (there are a lot of them) and Diesel, the cat. The mystery was interesting, but it was child's play to solve (I kept hoping for a good twist at the end, but there was not one). I give No Cats Allowed 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). I look forward to the next book in A Cat in the Stacks Mystery! I received a complimentary copy of No Cats Allowed from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the book!

      The interim library director of Athena (Mississippi) College, Oscar Reilly, has everybody on staff angry – including our hero/librarian Charlie Harris. He’s pissed off because Reilly has forbidden Charlie to bring his Maine Coon cat Diesel to the library as he has always done. Reilly conjures up a cat allergy, an allegation HR says must needs to prove. In the meantime, Diesel is home-bound. The interim director, who has a finance background but not a whit of knowledge about libraries, was brought in to find out the true extent of the mismanagement by the former director, who just resigned and disappeared.In this series, readers can count on having the most obnoxious character become the victim. No one is mourning Reilly. But the police glom onto Melba Gilley, Charlie’s childhood friend and the interim director’s administrative assistant, as the murderer. So Charlie, as usual, must use his voluminous knowledge of libraries and databases to help the chief deputy sheriff, Kanesha Berry, find the perpetrator.I’ve read the books in this series slightly out of order, finishing the last book, Twelve Angry Librarians, then reading #1 through #7 in order. Now I can’t wait for the next one, and that’s liable to be about a year away. Oh, well, it’s always fun to find a new favorite series. It is a bit slow moving, so readers who like a lot of action may find themselves falling asleep, but I have no such problem!

      No Cats Allowed is a great new addition to the Cat in the Stacks series. Once again Charlie and his oversized Maine Coon cat, Diesel, are involved in a murder investigation. As soon as I started reading No Cats Allowed, I was hooked. I couldn't put it down! A fun, relaxing read with a great mystery to keep you intrigued.

      Charlie Harris doesn't like Oscar Reilly, the Athena College library's new director, and neither does anyone else. He's managed to offend everyone he comes in contact with, and has just called Charlie's friend Melba a liar. To make it worse, he's filed a complaint with HR that he's allergic to cats, and wants to ban Diesel from the library.There have also been a series of pranks played on Reilly by someone, from writing 'Oscar the Grouch' on his car...with a lipstick that turns out to be Melba's, and several employees who were seemingly fired by him in a letter - a letter that had his forged signature. There have been other pranks as well.Before he'll allow that to happen, Charlie vows to quit his job. But then he hears that Reilly wants to get rid of the rare book collection and the archives, which Charlie has worked on lovingly and carefully the entire time he's been there. But before anyone can do anything else, Charlie gets the news that Reilly is dead, and Melba's lipstick has been found near the body. He calls his son Sean to help her as he's convinced she's innocent, and realizes that whether he wants it or not, he has to get involved this time to save his friend.But then Charlie is asked by the president of the college to take over as interim director. When he agrees, he doesn't realize that he's about to become the next victim of the pranks. Even the heightened security hasn't been able to stop it. Now Charlie realizes that the killer may very well be someone who works at the library, and he needs to figure out who it is before he becomes the next victim...I have to tell the truth and say that I haven't been terribly fond of this series up until now. I actually enjoyed reading this book. I don't know whether it's because I've gotten used to the characters, but the plot was very well thought out and there was less angst from Charlie about his kids, his girlfriend, etc. It makes for a much better plot if we can concentrate on the murder, the reason behind it, the surrounding clues and such rather than what dishes he's going to wash next.There were plenty of suspects to choose from, and even a few red herrings thrown in. It made for a nice change in that there was lots to sift through and find the right suspect. Although I didn't feel that it was difficult to do so - I am sure others, like myself, pretty much knew who the killer was for most of the book - it was still nice to see the interplay between characters.When we come to the end and all is revealed, it is a reason that is age old but still quite believable, and that made it a nice read indeed. Recommended.

      Charlie Harris and his cat Diesel are much loved by everyone, that is, by everyone but the new library director, Oscar Dillard. Oscar seems to attract enemies like a hound attracts fleas. When his body is discovered in library’s basement, the problem isn’t finding a suspect; the problem is narrowing down the long list of people he has wronged. This well-plotted mystery is filled with twists and turns, and peopled with likable characters, including Diesel, of course, and is fine example of a fascinating cozy at its best.

      Oscar Reilly, Interim Library Director at the Athena College Library, has managed to alienate just about everyone working there including Charlie Harris. Charlie is not happy when he is told he can no longer bring his Maine Coon Cat Diesel in to work and ponders his next steps. Oscar has made more enemies than friends so when he is murdered there are plenty of suspects, including Oscar’s secretary Melba Gilley. Charlie is sure his friend Melba is not the killer and sets out to clear her name. However, the more he investigates, the more he puts himself and those around him in very real danger.“No Cats Allowed” is the nicely done seventh book and Miranda James’ Cat in the Stacks cozy mystery series (Miranda James is the pseudonym for author Dean James). I love Charlie, Diesel, and the rest of their friends and this book had me hooked from the very beginning. Oscar Reilly truly was a nasty person which means there are plenty of suspects for readers to try and guess who the killer is. James takes his time letting the storyline unfold and the murder happen, which gives readers a great chance to get to know not only the murder victim but the suspects. This is a nice approach the pulls readers into the story so that they feel like they are there solving the mystery alongside Charlie and Diesel. There is just the right amount of tension in this book to keep readers on the edge of their seats at times – while reading the book there were a few times that I jumped when certain unexpected events happened. The book is cleverly plotted with plenty of twists and turns and, even with all the clues in the book, I couldn't figure out who the killer was. The motive for the murder was very realistic and well-written.“No Cats Allowed” is another nice cozy mystery by Miranda James.
