About this audiobook

Seventeen-year-old Aspen is a skydiving, rock climbing, adrenaline junkie. All her life, she's been fascinated by the dragons who roam near her home in Yellowstone Park. Yes, dragons. Though no human has ever gotten close enough to touch one. Except Aspen.

While most people avoid the national parks because of the resident dragons, Aspen spends most of her free time in search of the feared and misunderstood creatures. For her, studying the dragons is a way to escape a painful past and avoid getting too close to anyone.

She'd rather track dragons in the wild and through the lens of her camera than talk to real people. But then Aspen meets a hot new guy at school, Sid King. He's the one person she's ever met who shares her obsession with all things dragon. But even as she feels strangely drawn to the mysterious boy, she senses he's hiding his own set of dark and powerful secrets.

When hikers start turning up dead in the park, everyone suspects the formidable predators. Unless Aspen can prove their innocence, every one of her beloved dragons is in danger of eradication.

LOVE!!!!!My only disappointment is that Kat and Daemon didn't hook up before the book ended.OMG!!! The chemistry between them was intense. I couldn't wait for them to get together.... and I'm still waiting. It's not entirely a bad thing. The build up to this romance is at the top of the charts. I loved the sci-fi aspect too, and usually that's not my thing. It definitely is here though. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Supernatural space aliens living in West Virginia??? A bit of a stretch for the old imagination...even mine. I thought, when I found out about the "family next door"...that I probably would just gently close the covers of this one and say a few words over it before hauling it back to the library. For some reason I kept on reading. I soon found I had found a unique and entrancing story. The plot expands to a depth to where I wanted to keep going and find out how it played out. I really enjoyed what the author did when building the world that these aliens would share with the humans. She presented it in terms of how it could be if the events actually happened I don't know if I will read another of these books...not because they're bad..just not my particular types...but I found this one to be very good company.

Read the full review at Witchmag's BoekenplankThis book started really good. Katy moves with her mom, after her father’s death, to a quiet village somewhere in West Virginia. She meets her new neighbors, who act a little strange sometimes. A fun fact was that Katy is a passionate YA blogger. It’s not something that you read about often, while there’s lot’s of people blogging out there ^^At this point I’m quite bored to always read about someone who moves or a new kid who arrives at school to get the story started. Why can´t things change, without a new kid or new place? Although, sometimes, there’s just no other way around it. And it’s not a bore if it’s done right, if it enhances the story. As is the case with Obsidian, there’s a plausible motive (death of Kathy’s father) and it doesn’t feel like a cliché.I liked how throughout the story little hints are dropped till the real identity of Daemon and Dee were revealed. And it was even better than I expected! Although I was surprised with the way Daemon handled it. I loved the whole revelation and what Daemon and his sister are and what they can do. And it’s so refreshing, so not the usual I’m-a-werewolf/witch/vampire stuff! Nope he’s an alien! Although the big revelation didn’t sit quite well with me when thinking about his character. He’s trying to protect his little sister at all costs. So you wouldn’t think that once he’s seen, he automatically tells EVERYTHING? He might have been able to cover it up (although that would have been some explaining!).Usually I like it when we have our romantic couple bickering about almost every little thing, while making very funny remarks about one another. Here, however, the bickering was a bit too much. From the very first page Daemon and Katy have been at each others throats. Although short truces have been made, they didn’t last long and the fights started to get predictable and a bit annoying. That also had an impact on how I enjoyed the romance time. Or the lack thereof. The ending seemed a bit too fast, it felt like I’d pushed on the fast forward button instead of the play button. Therefore there was some difficulty with keeping track of the story. But the ending did make me curious for the next book. I hope there’s some explaining about what exactly happened during the last couple of pages. And I got the feeling that a certain someone will make his appearance, so that made me even more curious to continue this story ^^Conclusion3 HEARTS. A solid start, with lots of hints and pieces of the puzzle to keep you interested. After the big revelation my concentration dropped and it became a bit confusing. Daemon and Katy argued a bit too much during the story, which was annoying after some time. The ending was a couple of gears too high, but it did manage to spark my interest for the next book.

booknook — Young Adult book reviewsUgh. I feel like the only person in the world who doesn't love Obsidian. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't wowed by it either, and I certainly didn't like the romance.Okay, so Daemon is hot. But honestly, that's about it. He is a complete and utter douchebag. Right away we see that he's a douche, but I dealt with it, and I even laughed a bit, because I honestly thought he'd come out of his shell and turn into this nice amazing guy... so wrong. He continued to be a douchebag, with fleeting moments of sweetness in between. Even Katy realized this and bitched at him for playing hot and cold with her. It was so infuriating. One minute he's being an arrogant self-absorbed dickhead, and the next he's saying something sweet.. and then he's back to being a douche. Okay, so he was fiercely loyal and protective of his family and I guess that's admirable, but he still acted like a dick when it was completely unnecessary and uncalled for. I don't care how hot the guy is, he's still a dick.I think I was hoping that Obsidian would have this great knee-weakening romance, but what I got was two people who hate each others' guts but happen to be sexually attracted to each other. That makes for some steamy, charged moments, but a crappy relationship.Moving on. Dee was totally an awesome character and I adored her! She's one of those sweet, adorable, totally huggable best friends. I think I'm obsessed with these kinds of characters. She's just a cute, bubbly, sweetheart who you can't say "no" to. And then there's Lesa. Lesa was totally my favourite character! She didn't have a huge part, but there were small bits now and then that had me cracking up! "Oh my god, you have to tell me everything!  Did you guys kiss?  Wait.  Did you have sex?" "Lesa, seriously, chill.""Whatever.  You have to tell me.  I will hate you forever if you did but don't tell me.  What does he smell like?""Smell like?" I scrunched up my face.Obsidian, Page 240 "I don't think he meant to kiss me," I say finally. "What? Did he slip and fall on your mouth? Those things are known to happen."Obsidian, Page 241 "I don't know. I mean we haven't talked about it. He literally left afterward, and all he's done since then is poke me with his pen." "Probably because he wants to poke you with something else," she said dryly."Obsidian, Page 241So, the bottom line: I hated the romance, the alien stuff was kind of cool, the side characters were great, but this book didn't rock my world. I read it through quickly enough but it just didn't draw me in. I wasn't hooked. I didn't scream with delight or squeal or cry or any of that awesomeness. And there was a time sort of in the middle when I was getting a little bored. It was in between major plot moments and I was like, "Okay, ready for something new to happen." The beginning was also a little frustrating because it was before we found out about the alien stuff and everyone seemed to be alluding to this big mystery. It reminded me a lot of when people say stuff like, "So I know this super awesome secret... but I can't tell you." There is nothing more annoying than that!I didn't hate Obsidian but I clearly didn't love it. I'm kind of disappointed because I literally see everyone and their mother obsessing over Obsidian and I kind of wish I could be one of those people. I wanted to be super excited about this book but it just wasn't thrilling me.

I picked up a copy of this book because of the hype that surrounds it, and I was surprised to find that it lives up to it! Obsidian is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I enjoyed it so much that I’ve already put in pre-orders for books 2 and 3 of this series. It features an interesting take on aliens, a refreshingly level-headed heroine and lots of action and drama and heat between the two main protagonists.Katy is an awesome YA heroine, an opinion I formed early on because she is a fellow book blogger. The very first page tells us about her love for books and the addiction she has to her blog. The very first scene has Katy wearing a T-shirt blaring the words “MY BLOG IS BETTER THAN YOUR VLOG”. Here is a heroine that I immediately connected with! I’ve always said that with all the books I read I would react to anything paranormal very differently to the average YA protagonist, and Katy proves this point with her reaction to Daemon’s extraterrestrial origin. She also knows when she is being treated badly by Daemon. Even though he’s hot and she can’t deny that she is physically attracted to him, Katy recognises that they don’t get along well and refuses to entertain the idea of a functional relationship between them. But there is a strong sexual pull between them, even though they can’t stand one another, which provides a constant source of exasperation and humour. My favourite character in the book is Dee – Daemon’s twin sister who quickly becomes a close friend of Katy’s. She’s loud, energetic and has an awesome personality. I think I would get along with her really well. Most of the other supporting characters blend into the background for me – Katy’s human friends at school aren’t particularly interesting and the Luxen are quite confusing because there are so many multiple births in their race and I had a hard time keeping track of all the twins and triplets.Obsidian is very well-paced and has a plot that kept surprising me. Katy is an observant narrator, and although she sees a lot of inexplicable things, she isn’t dumb about them or jump to stupid conclusions. She reasons through things and comes up with the same explanations that I would in her situation. There is a lot of action in this book, and, again, I was impressed with how Katy reacts to it. She is brave without seeming silly or suicidal, and doesn’t make decisions that end up creating more trouble than preventing it.Obsidian is a gripping, fun read that impressed me greatly and I am eagerly awaiting the publication of the rest of the books in the series, including a prequel novel that is being released soon. I think fans of YA fiction will love this book – it is certainly more enjoyable than the only other YA alien book I’ve read: I am Number Four. You can read more of my reviews at Speculating on SpecFic.

Who knew being a jerk could be so likable. Daemon and Katy's relationship can be cold one minute and fiery hot the next. Daemon is an alien and Katy is his spunky new neighbor. Daemon enjoys ruffling Katy's ire, which Katy on some level seems to take pleasure in. Daemon and Katy were two of the best characters (put together)I've came across in a while, Daemon can be irritating but I didn't hate him once; Katy is no shrinking violet, she holds her own against Daemon's ever changing moods.

This was my first alien themed paranormal romance read, and it was a pleasurable one. If I every read another alien themed PNR. I hope it's as good as this one. The author's writing style was superb, the writing was witty, and appropriate.

Hope the next book is even better.

So I got this as a free ebook on my Nook. It said it was about aliens in high school and I thought eh why not? I read it and then I was hooked. The main character Katy is pretty realistic and although this book follows the "Twilight Trope" that has become so popular in YA Fiction I feel like this book has something to offer.

First off when main characters Katy and Daemon first meet there isn't any insta love(YAY!). Daemon actually pisses Katy off and they spend the majority of the book fighting and basically being assholes to each other. Which was awesome. Katy becomes best friends with Daemon's twin sister Dee and Katy starts to notice weird things about the Black family and their close friends the more time she spends with them.

She finds out that their aliens and that the government has been basically covering up the existence of two alien races that have come to earth. The Luxen who are light based beings and the Arum who are dark based beings. Daemon and Dee are Luxen and Katy slowly gets tangled up in their world and ongoing battles with the Arum.

What I liked most about this book was Katy's character. She's funny, intelligent, runs a book blog, and basically a well rounded teenage character. She feels realistic to me as a sixteen to seventeen year old girl. The next thing I loved about this book was that they did poke fun at the similarities between it and Twilight. Jennifer L. Armentrout knows her audience well. Plus Daemon is described a super-hot but he's basically an asshole the entire time which I liked. He's trying to keep Katy and human at a distance after the disappearance of his and Dee's other brother and his human girlfriend. But Daemon and Katy undergo some really great character growth.

I have to admit after reading this book I bought the rest in the series as ebooks and I loved it. Sure sometimes I caught myself rolling my eyes at the characters because of their plotting and their attempts at being adults but I do that with real teenagers. All in all I would 100% recommend this book it made me laugh, it surprised me, it was predictable in some cases, but it was a great read!

I had to spend some time thinking over this book before I could review it. Unfortunately, I loved this book so much, I needed to spend some reflection time on it before I could give it a fair review.

The novel is obviously about teenagers falling in love, the supernatural and the angst of highschool.

I loved the fact that the author develops her own creature that is made of pure light, rather than cookie cutter vampire-werewolf themes. She even says werewolves and vampires are not real. Its a realistic world, with realistic characters, with REALISTIC problems. Many YA fantasy Ive read has some upper-class girl meeting a paranormal and falling in love with him. The main characters are far more down to Earth, and seem to continue to live semi-normal lives after the "secret" is exposed.

Also, i adored the fact that the main character does not become an over bearing Edward character, like Twilight. He lets the girl make her own decisions, and she even gets to save the boy! The female lead is a strong and independent individual and even in the end, her decision when the object of her affection asks her if she would date him..it was completely NOT cliche!

I cannot wait to see where Armentrout takes us in book three. I am definitely pre-ordering this. I just hope the female independence, and male respect continue in the next book..

You know, as I was reading this book, I found myself trying to mentally tally up the things I liked and disliked about this book, because generally, I want to mention the good and the bad in a review. But I got to the end of this book, and I had to throw my hands up in the air and admit the truth.

    I hated this book.

Most notably, I hated Daemon, the so-called love interest. I hated that our washed-out protagonist with no real personality of her own, Kitty, doesn't simply walk away and never look back. I especially hated that this is the unhealthy relationship dynamic being sold to young girls, the Twilight phenomenon of passing off emotional and verbal abuse as True Love (TM).

You know, at the end of the book, I ALMOST thought Katy was going to grow up into a real, multi-faceted character with a backbone of her very own. When Daemon tries to insist that they might have something because he insults her all the time and they want to jump each other, Katy tells him that no, it isn't real. And you know what, Goodreads? IT ISN'T.

The guy who's making out with his girlfriend in front of you is not secretly thinking about how badly he wants you. That same guy who humiliates you in front of your new friends at your BRAND NEW SCHOOL is not secretly thinking about how he's doing all of this for your own safety. Say it with me now: it. isn't. real.

Unfortunately, the Daemon-POV extra tacked in at the end made it all-too-clear where these books appear to be headed. Naturally, every god-awful thing he's done to Katy was for her own good, and can be easily explained by a wave of a magic wand. Or Obsidian alien dagger thingie.

I am sick and tired of YA novels telling girls to put up with this kind of bullshit treatment from their prospective/current boyfriend. It doesn't matter why he's wearing down your self-esteem day by day and treating you like shit. He might believe it's for your own good. He might believe that he's justified. He might even have some kind of tortured past that makes you feel terribly guilty and sympathetic. It doesn't matter. You deserve better than what he's giving you.

As you can probably imagine, I won't be continuing this series.

This had the potential to be original. But change "alien" to "vampire/werewolf/fallen angel/faerie/etc." and you've probably read the same story elsewhere. Even the UST between Daemon and Kat can't salvage the book.

But I'm glad the cover of the second printing is less amateur-looking than the original cover.

I was: disappointed the alien premise was overshadowed by a toxic romance. My thoughts:It's hard for me to rate this book so harshly because really, I loved the premise. I have always had a soft spot for alien stories (thank you X-Files ;) so I was pretty excited to read Obsidian. Honestly though the fact that there were aliens in this story is the only thing I liked. I just could not get over the destructive relationship between Katy and Daemon.I feel really strongly about Daemon - and not in the way most of you do. I think he's dangerous, as a character. He is not the type of boy that any girl should hope for. Take away the fact that he is an alien, strip him down literally and I'm sorry, I don't care how hot he is - engaging in any type of relationship with him isn't healthy. I very much felt like if he were short with a face full of pimples and a lazy eye Katy would never have spend even 1 second of her time with him. As a reader I cannot equate hotness with redemption. I cannot justify in my mind why Katy lets him insult her and after looking into his eyes, feels the need to apologize to him. Not healthy at all people! Destructive, dangerous, ugly. Not hot or romantic or swoon worthy. I had zero respect for Katy and it was hard for me to stomach their interactions. Daemon is not a boy any girl should swoon or pine for. There are evil boys in YA lit, there are bad boys with a heart of gold and then there are just assholes. I doesn't matter that he's hot or that he's special or that he may really love his sister. He is a horrible person. He is dangerous and full of himself and he treats Katy like crap and she basically says please sir can I have some more. Again, I had absolutely no respect for Katy throughout the entire book. Final verdict:So, really, not a whole lot of love from me on this one and I won't be continuing with the series. Yes the aliens are cool - mainly because we don't see a lot of contemporary alien YA books these days. But rather then being a really cool alien book with some romance, I felt like Obsidian was a bad romance book that happens to involve aliens. While I don't think I'll be recommending this book much in the future I would still say, if you have Obsidian in your TBR pile to give it a try. Mostly because just about everyone I know who has read this has loved it. I'm thinking this one might be a 'not for me but maybe for you book'? Although...that relationship...I'm having a hard time getting over how toxic it is. If you've read Obsidian I would be interested in knowing your thoughts on Katy and Daemon's relationship. For me, it was a deal breaker but for you, maybe not?

What can I say that you haven't already heard or read. Daemon Black is hotness personified. He has taken over the blogosphere and is making his presence known in a big way, but then who would expect anything less from Daemon (he certainly wouldn't). When I first read Obsidian, I hadn't heard of Jennifer Armentrout or Obsidian, but was intrigued by the cover. When I opened it, I didn't put it down until I finished it, and after experiencing almost every emotion possible, I became and forever will be a Jennifer Armentrout total fan girl and a Daemon Black stalker. I guess that sounds pathetic, but it is what it is (smile). The thing is, I think there are a lot more out there just like me (smiles again). Needless to say, I have bought everything Jennifer Armentrout has written and have read them all, most more than once. I actually purchased the new edition of Obsidian for the new Daemon POV's (and the first two chapters of Onyx). Fan girl or not, Jennifer Armentrout is just that good. Obsidian had me hooked from the first page, really from the cover. Sometimes I wonder if it is ever made into a movie if they will ever find anyone to live up to the cover model's image. Daemon is hot, but I said that already didn't I. He is also arrogant, stubborn, vain, and loyal. I love Katy. I think she is awesome. She is a fellow book lover and blogger, and she doesn't take any crap from Daemon. I think she is one pretty kick-butt heroine. The story absolutely sucks you in and you want to crawl up in there and live a while. The chemistry between Daemon and Katy is off the scales hot, and so is the action and drama. I love Dee, Daemon's sister and Katy's new BFF. She is a doll. All the supporting characters are well written and you feel like you get to know them all....the good, the bad, and the ugly Arum. Seriously, only Jennifer could make Aliens so interesting and so freaking hot. If you haven't read it, you need to read it, for real, seriously, make the time, you won't be sorry. There are some books that are on my to be read list, and some that are on my read again list, but Obsidian is on my read again and again and again list. I wanted to leave you with a few teasers from Obsidian. These are from the extras at the end of the book from Daemon's point of view. Enjoy! Eventually my gaze landed on the front of her shirt. My Blog is Better than your Vlog. What in the world did that mean? And why would she have that on her shirt.....and the words "Blog" and "Better" were stretched taut. I swallowed. Not a good sign. She really needed to get her cute ass off my porch before I did something stupid. Like smile at the way she was blushing. Sexy even. "Going once...." I knew I was being an ass at this point, but I was perversely enjoying the spunk slowly igniting behind her eyes, baiting me. And....the flush of anger was sort of hot in a weird, there's really something wrong with me kind of way. My hand stilled, but I didn't move it away. Wasn't like she was going to fall on her face now, but I....I just didn't, and I wasn't at all okay with that. I clenched my jaw. My fingers slipped along the curve of her cheek as my head tilted. I was going to regret this - holy crap was I ever, but I wasn't stopping. Our lips were only a breath away...... "Nothing," I replied, jumping from the swing. I glanced at a silent, dazed Kat. Her gray eyes were still hazy and wide. Freaking beautiful. "Just earning bonus points."If you haven't read Obsidian, I hope that after reading Daemon's teasers, you will want to, and if you have...... well, we all need as many swooning hot alien Daemon moments as we can get.

Wow. This book is so frickin' awesome. Extremely hard to put down! Obsidian is a fun and action-packed book. It's full of wonderfully charming characters that you will love and care for. As for the cover? Who wouldn't drool over that? You know what made me so crazy about reading this book in the first place? It was the blurb. More specifically, ".....I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up. And then he opened his mouth." I'd heard many great things about Jennifer L. Armentrout and I just knew Obsidian would be good! Read it!I loved the characters! They were fun! They were exciting! Katy, I found that I could really relate to her, like REALLY relate to her. She is a book blogger! A girl who is totally obsessed over books, like me! Katy is courageous and brave. She's always willing to risk her life for others. I don't think she realises how beautiful she really is, like many girls I know! But there's one thing I absolutely hate about her. She lives next door to a hottie. Damn, many girls would loose an arm and a leg to live where she does! Daemon Black. The untouchable boy with amazing green eyes and a tanned chest. *Drooool* Okay, so maybe Daemon isn't the nicest of guys, but he does try. He's not very good with words, his eyes and actions give his emotions away. When you read Obsidian, please read it slowly and savour every single scene with Daemon in it! Onyx, the sequel, isn't going to be out for another few months (August 2012, BOOOO).Obsidian will leave you breathless and pratically BEGGING for more. The action and steamy romance will hook you in like no other. As pages turn and days past, you will slowly see friendships blossom and relationships begin. You see Katy slowly get over her father's death, eventhough he died 3 years earlier she still feels the loss and emptiness. The fact that her mother works most hours a day does not make those feelings dissappear. I really felt for Katy, she's had a tough life and I don't think she deserved to be treated like the plague when she moved!Having the whole paranormal twist made it so much more interesting. I don't want to give away toooo much information! But let's just say that Daemon is one fit alien and damn, he lights up my world.

A few months ago I read and really enjoyed Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout. So when I came across Obsidian it was no question about reading this book. Obsidian is a 'don't want to put down' book. I was hooked from the first sentence.Katy moves to a small town in West Virginia during the summer before her senior year. She's not too happy about the move but she loves and supports her mom's decision. Katy is also a book blogger. I must admit I was a little nervous when I read about that. However Jennifer L Armentrout pretty much nailed the blogger aspect of it. To satisfy her mom's request of not becoming antisocial, she goes next door to meet the neighbors. What she doesn't expect is that the events that unfold after she knocks on their door will change her life forever. The characters in the book are great. I loved each and everyone of them. Katy is the main character. She's feisty, inquisitive and stands up for herself. Dee, Daemon's sister is delightful. She's the perfect best friend. Daemon is a bit of an ass in the beginning. He's arrogant, overprotective, and drop dead gorgeous. Katy and Daemon have chemistry. White hot chemistry. The story line in this book is very fast paced. It's full of action, adventure and a little romance. There are secrets to uncover, enemies to out run and if all that's not bad enough they have to go tackle senior year. After I finished reading the last page I immediately wanted to read the next book in this series. Jennifer L. Armentrout knows how to write a story! I want to live in her head with all these fantastic characters. I have high hopes for the next book in this series.

I really liked this very different paranormal romance. Katy has just moved to "Nowhere, West Virginia" with her mom. Her mom has a new job and it is a chance for them to move on after the death of her father. Katy is glad for her mom's new start but not sure that she wants to live in a small town. Things start to look up when she sees the gorgeous boy next door. Unfortunately Daemon isn't nearly as nice as his exterior. She does become friends with his sister Dee though. But things are just a little odd in the town. Many of the town people don't like Dee and Daemon and they seem really standoffish too. They both seem to be keeping lots of secrets. Daemon and his friends discourage Katy from being friends with Dee. It doesn't help that a few young women around town have disappeared too. Something strange is clearly going on. But Katy had no idea just how strange. Her neighbors are aliens who are hiding from other aliens who want to kill them by draining their energy and who are willing and eager to kill any humans who get in their way. I liked Katy. She was a strong, independent young woman with a pretty snarky attitude. She wasn't going to let Daemon have the upper hand and she wasn't going to let him push her around. I liked her realistic attitude when she found out that her new friends were aliens. I also liked that Katy was a book blogger. And Daemon... What a reluctant hero! He was determined not to get involved with Katy because humans and aliens don't mix and because she could be a danger to his sister. But the attraction between the two of them was sizzling. Trying to stay away from Katy is impossible when he needs to protect her from the bad aliens. This was a great story filled with interesting characters.

The first half was slow and repetitive (Daemon's so hot, now he's snarly, now hot, etc.; seriously girl, don't you have anything else to think about?). The second half was a lot more fun -- in a crazysauce, CW sort of way maybe, but I prefer crazysauce to boring angstiness.I liked the characters and, except for how most of them are super hot and not human, they actually reminded me of people I went to high school with (in good ways and bad). The story uses pretty standard tropes, but I enjoyed Ms. Armentrout's voice, so that didn't bother me.So, basically, I had a cheesy good time and look forward to the next in the series.

Jennifer Armentrout needs to stop being such a genius. Seriously.Obsidian is that novel I wanted to give practically every book I own for. (Not that I did that. But if I had, this would probably have been worth it.) I mean, aliens? Come on. I might be slightly obsessed. Area 51, anyone? >_>Anyway. Obsidian is definitely a character-driven novel. That's not to say there's not plenty of plot, because there is, but the characters seem to be the most notable. Katy, for one thing. I loved how determined she was to remain friends with Dee, and I love how she wasn't a total pushover when it came to Daemon, specifically at the end. Katy is easy to connect to, and not just because she's a book blogger. I also loved that she was affected when everyone was rejecting her when she tried to sit with them at lunch. It's not like she was untouchable. Katy had real emotions.Daemon is a completely different story. I didn't love him at first. Not at all. He was just too rude, regardless of how hot I pictured him :P I loved seeing how he changed throughout the book, though I will admit, he didn't fully redeem himself in my eyes until the last 40 pages or so. He might have been funny at times, but he was a major ass. And that's the thing - he worked that way. His sweet moments were genuine, and I think if he'd had more moments where he wasn't being an ass, they would have seemed fake. The plot was amazing, too. The story of Daemon and his sister, Dee, and what they really are was something I really enjoyed reading, and something I thought was really original, too. I loved that story. I loved how Jennifer Armentrout basically took "aliens" to an entirely new level O_OI've read a lot of reviews that talk about how funny this book is. I never really laughed-out-loud, but there were some funny moments. And the thing is, Obsidian isn't just some silly read. While there were funny moments, there were also some intense moments and some action scenes, and there were plenty of emotions that came across strong and clear. And also, there were plenty of moments when I was like this: In fact, I think the only issue I had was that I had a bit of a problem with the book blogging. I think the references to memes might confuse some people who aren't book bloggers. Sure, "Waiting on Wednesday" and "In My Mailbox" seem fairly self-explanatory, but for someone who's not a book blogger, I feel like they might need an explanation for those kinds of things.Overall: For me, Obsidian was definitely worth the hype. I think it's a good book for anyone - there's plenty of chemistry between the characters for romance readers, plenty of moments where Katy did amazing things for such an ordinary person for anyone who loves strong heroines, plenty of action scenes (and some killing ones, too) for anyone who loves that stuff, and lots of alien things going on for sci-fi lovers. I'd be crazy to give this anything other than 5 stars.

I loved HALF-BLOOD so when I saw that Jennifer had another book coming out I went to check it out. I wasn't quite sure what I would think of the book but from my previous experience with not jumping on HALF-BLOOD when it first got here then kicking myself later for not reading it sooner I knew I should read OBSIDIAN no matter what. I was not disappointing.Katy and her Mom move from Florida to West Virginia to get a new start after her father died. She wasn't very excited to be there but decided she would give the neighbor kids a shot and introduce herself. So imagine her surprise when a super hot guy answers the door and he proceeds to be a complete and udder @ss to her. Thankfully his sister Dee who she meets later is really nice and they hit it off. She doesn't understand why Daemon and his friends hate her so much but she is determined to keep Dee as her friend.I LOVED that Katy is a blogger, I thought it was super fun to read about her blog posts and her geeking out with her in the mail videos. It made me laugh to hear her talk about her blog and how she missed it when she couldn't get one of her posts up. Katy was really easy to like. She is really independent and did a great job of sticking up for herself when all she wanted to do at some points is break down. No matter how much of a jerk Daemon was he was also a strong likable character. You get to know him even through his mood swings and get to see how protective and loving he is int he way he treats his sister. The romantic tension between Daemon and Katy made me laugh and cry at times. The emotions all around were real and high. I cant wait for more development on their relationship. The storyline was really unique and exciting. I loved learning about Daemon and Dee and who they really were. The whole idea of them was imaginative and well explained. I'm really excited to learn more about them and their future. There was nothing about OBSIDIAN that I didn't like. I would recommend that you go buy it and read it now but be warned that you will be dying to get your hands on book 2.

Ok, so after reading Jennifer's Half-Blood I couldn't wait to get my hands on something, anything, written by her! So, of course, I jumped at the chance to read Obsidian early!I just love Armentrout's writing style. It's so witty and to the point. Jennifer's writing is not overly detailed or bogged down by large words. She gets her story across with simplistic charm. The raport between the characters was so much fun to experience. I love the sarcasm, the witty remarks, the angst. The sizzling chemistry, the comical banter and the character dynamics are some of my favorites, by far. The "voice" of this novel is just superb. The characters themselves are great. Katy, Daemon and Dee are a dynamic team. Katy is sweet and caring, if a bit naive. She finds a true friend in Dee, who is just bubbly and energetic. Daemon is... well, what isn't Daemon?! First off, just look at that cover! *swoon* Typically I don't like seeing faces of cover models, because they never look anything like what I imagine the characters as. But this time around, the cover artists for Obsidian sure did it right! This guy is EXACTLY how I picture Daemon. He's sexy, infuriating, feisty, arrogant, annoying, and definitely "stab-worthy" at times. He and Katy clash straight from the get-go. The development of their love/hate relationship is amusing and the sexual tensions is quite steamy at times.Obviously you know this storyline involves aliens, which is quite refreshing. I've read quite a bit about vampires, werewolves and angels recently... I was immensely pleased to find something a little different and Obsidian sure hit the spot. There is a bit of a Roswell feel to this story, which I really enjoyed. I loved watching that television show growing up. But learning all about the type of aliens that Daemon and Dee are and understanding their powers is quite intriguing. They're not your typical run-of-the-mill little green guys with antennae. The characters are splendid and the storyline is quite addictive. With a fast-moving pace and never a dull moment, Obsidian is sure to be extremely engrossing and quite the page-turner. Wholly unputdownable, Jennifer Armentrout has created a show-stopper! I've already pre-ordered my copy, and I think that you should, too! Once again, I look forward to Jennifer's next novel, whichever one it may be. I can't get enough of her wonderful writing!

Jennifer L. Armentrout is absolutely amazing!!! I just finished Half-Blood, Pure, and Obsidian in less than 3 days (with an 8 month old baby constantly needing my attention), and I already find myself needing more!!!! Apparently, her writing is my drug of choice!!!When I first read the description, I thought to myself, "Aliens? Really?" But then I started reading and it was like I couldn't stop...I didn't even eat...I needed to finish this book like I needed air!!! So....here's my list of Why I Love JLA and Obsidian more than air.1.) Witty banter--Katy and Daemon are constantly bickering with each other, pushing each other's buttons in the perfect I-hate-you-so-shut-up-and-kiss-me way. I found myself jealous that my husbad and I don't argue like we hate each other (I know, it's crazy...again, why JLA is crack!). Their conversations are clever and rude with just the right amount of foreplay! (Can I say that on here? I hope so!)2.) Daemon--the arrogant, self-absorbed (or so we think), super chiseled resident hottie in Obsidian. He's just so (insert girly swoon sound)....yummy. He's quick on his feet, has a blaring temper (which I love), and can kick butt! Any girl would swoon over this guy!3.) Alex--she's smart and doesn't take any crap from anyone--my kind of heroine. She's just a normal girl that gets thrown into a not so normal world--I like that she's normal, no witchy powers or anything. Makes me believe something magical can happen to us all!!!4.) The Setting--there are so many great scenes in this book. The woods provide a great place to build suspense and romance. And then there's the lake--oh, the lake. I loved the scenes at the lake! Just go read it! Now!5.) And finally....Daemon...again. Seriously, he makes me tingle. So, I demand you go buy a copy of this book today!!!! It'll be one of the best decisions you've ever made!

AWESOME! This book was so freakin' good. I had seen it listed on tons of bloggers lists for last year and one of my GR friends listed it as a favorite as well so I finally decided to pick it up. HOLY CRAP! Why didn't I pick this one up sooner?

The story was interesting, the chemistry between the main characters was incredible and the writing was great, especially the dialogue, which is so important to me.

I really liked both Daemon and Katy. He was an ass, but he had his reasons and she was fabulous. Katy's inner dialogue was pretty humorous and I have to admit I love that she was a book nerd.

I will 100% be picking up the rest of the books in the series and can't wait to spend more time with these characters. Also, I must give some bonus points to Jennifer L Armentrout for the extra scenes from Daemon's POV after the book. It was nice to get inside of his head for a bit.

It should probably be noted, that this book is definitely a series book. The ending of the book has closure for the main outside conflict in the story, but Katy and Daemon are still a work in progress.

There are a few authors that I know I can always count on, my "Old Faithfuls". I can always count on their books leaving me satisfied, thrilled and usually wanting for more. I'm talking about authors such as Cassandra Clare, Jeri Smith-Ready, and a few others. Now, I am without a doubt adding Jennifer Armentrout to that list. I loved the first book of hers that I read, Half-Blood. And to be honest, I went into Obsidian expecting another good book from Armentrout. What I didn't expect was for Obsidian to completely rock my world!I don't even know how to start explaining my love for this book. Maybe the story. New girl in town meets hot, snarky guy. Sparks fly. Literally. Their being together is bad news. Like, deadly bad news. Seriously, in Obsidian, the author has taken the teen alien story and given it the coolest, most unique spin. I always strive for spoiler-free reviews. I love for the reader to be able to discover the intricate details of the story for themselves. So I'm not going into the nitty-gritty of the story. Just trust me when I say that as far as these books go, Obsidian is, to me, heads and shoulders above books such "I Am Number Four", which I really liked. The characters in Obsidian are so vivid, alive. Katy, the main character, is...wait for it....A BLOGGER! Katy loves to read and blog. She checks her comments, her follower count and films IMM vlogs! That just felt like a huge shout-out to the book bloggers of the world and made me totally love Katy. But that's not all I loved about her. She is independent, self-reliant and does not take any crap off of people (or aliens!). She's quick to call Daemon out on his crap and flip him the bird as she's walking away. What's more, she is a loyal friend. Katy holds the fates of her new friends and never once considers giving them up, even when her own life is at risk. One of Katy's new friends is Dee, the girl next door and sister to Daemon. Dee is completely,squish-ably, adorable. She is like a breath of fresh, drama-free air. Especially when compared to her brother. Daemon. Where to begin. Okay. You know those hot, sarcastic, can-be-a-real-jerk guys that we all know and love? For example, Jace from The Mortal Instruments series, or Adrian from Vampire Academy. Take everything you love, and what drives you crazy about those guys, and multiply that by 10. Or 20. Possibly 100. Are you picking up on what I'm saying here? For real. Daemon made me bonkers. Take a look at the cover of Obsidian. He's hot, right. Devastating. Who wouldn't want some of that? I wanted to like him. And he did have some nice moments in the first half of the book. But then he would do or say something that made me want to scream. He comes across as an arrogant, rude... ass hat. I actually tweeted Jennifer Armentrout at one point and said that "I want to punch Daemon in the throat and make out with him, simultaneously". Her response was, he would probably like that. I swear, I felt everything that Katy was feeling about him. I honestly wondered if there was any coming back for Daemon. There was. Like many tortured heroes, Daemon's startling behavior is explained by a look at his past. Once you know why Daemon is so guarded and hostile, you can start to understand his actions. And why he is so desperate to hang on to what's left, especially his sister. The sibling love between Daemon and Dee was so beautiful, it just broke my heart. Obsidian left me emotionally exhausted. I'm still reeling. And the ending? Evil. A good evil, for sure. But I want,no,need more, soon. I have no idea when book two is even planned to be released. Or if Armentrout has even started writing it yet. But you better believe, with the track record she is building for herself, the next book will be fantastic. I will be stalking the Internet for news in the meantime. Favorite Quote:I bookmarked seven quotes that I loved. It was hard to choose only one. "Daemon's stare was so concentrated I took an unintentional step back, but we didn't break eye contact. A craving unfurled deep in my stomach, shooting through me like heated lightning, and that-that was the kind of feeling you couldn't force, couldn't even replicate if you wanted."*I received an eARC of Obsidian from Entangled Publishing, in exchange for an honest review.*

I absolutely adored this book! The only reason that it got an A instead of an A+ is because it needed better editing. The first time I read it, I didn't even notice the typos and minor inconsistencies. The story was THAT good, but this second time, I noticed them. I don't blame Armentrout for this, it was probably sloppy editing from the publishing company. However, it does detract from the story, and what a story it is.I normally detest sci-fi books, movies, TV shows, etc., but Armentrout built a world that I can totally relate to and love. The novel itself reads more like a paranormal romance, just with aliens in the place of werewolves, angels, or vampires. The story is quick-moving, and I read it all in one sitting. Katy, the protagonist/heroine, who is also a book blogger, has just moved to West Virginia from Florida with her mother the summer before her senior year. They moved because her father died of brain cancer three years ago, and her mother is still running away from the pain. She is sarcastic, funny, and easy to relate to. Once she gets to West Virginia, poor Katy just can't stay out of trouble, and Daemon (her super hot next door neighbor) has to keep saving her. Of course most of her problems are because of Daemon's alien heritage, anyway, and even though Daemon saves her, he is still a jerk to her most of the time. This leads to a lot of sexual tension, and when they finally act on that tension (no sex, just a hot and heavy make out session), it is one of the steamiest scenes I've ever read, which is shocking because this is a young adult book. However, the build up really adds to the budding romance between Katy and Daemon, and while Daemon comes across as a jerk at times, he is also a very endearing character. It's clear that he wants to do what's best for Katy, and he just can't figure out what that is. Katy doesn't want Daemon's help though, and she refuses to take his crap, which he likes. Instead of depending on Daemon, like many of the heroines of YA novels do to the heroes, she wants to take care of herself and not become a liability to him and his sister (and Katy's BFF) Dee. Because of her stubborn streak, Katy gets into more trouble than she would have gotten into if her pride hadn't gotten in the way so many times, but her problems make the book that much more interesting. She's always trying to antagonize Daemon and prove that she can get along fine without him, but she can't. Not anymore because she got involved in something she knew nothing about and isn't able to protect herself because she's a weak human. That doesn't keep her from trying, though, and she at least earns the respect of Daemon and Dee (and a couple of other aliens) through her loyal (though sometimes stupid) actions. Dee is another character that really makes this book stand out. She is one of those characters that you just have to love, and even though she is so alive, her exuberant personality doesn't detract from Katy's personality at all. Each character has his or her own quirks and personality traits, and none of them are boring. Dee is hyperactive and super sweet and caring, and she is a terrific friend to Katy. Since the story is told from a first person POV (Katy's), it is impossible not to love Dee as much as Katy does. The characters and story are fantastic, and Armentrout is a wonderful writer. However, because of some language and heavy make out scenes, I'd recommend this book to people who are 14 years of age or older. That being said, Obsidian is one of the best novels I've read all year. I cannot wait for the sequel. Don't miss this out-of-this-world roller coaster ride!

First off, let me say hell yeah to the shout out to bloggers. I absolutely LOVE that the main character is a book blogger, and that its authentic. I haven't seen that in any other book, and it rocks. The writing is awesome, as I've come to know from Half Blood, the first in Jennifer's other series (I also have a copy of Pure screaming at me to be read... I just seriously need to find more time to read, but with the three year old and the newborn, its not as often as I like, but I digress). As most of you probably know, I am a character person. They make or break books for me, and Jennifer sure nailed it. I love Katy's voice and character, she was so easy to connect with and to be in her head. It was natural and flowed so well. She's kinda shy but she fights to overcome it, which I admire greatly. I love how bold she is with Daemon sometimes, and the way the way that she handles him... well, it couldn't be done any better. Her internal voice, especially the running commentary about his lack of wearing a shirt is great. And oh hot Daemon. Who knew that aliens could be sexy. But he totally makes it work. He has the bad ass vibe, and he really is an ass sometimes. By about half way through, I understand why, but still. And I really think that the jerkiness is mostly because he wants to protect her and his sister. He doesn't want her to be drawn into a dangerous world. But does that excuse it? I appreciate how Katy questions it, and doesn't just let the attraction totally drive things. She doesn't let his sexy overpower what she wants and what she knows she deserves. And there really is some tender beneath the jerk, even though it isn't the easiest to see or remember when he's being a jerk. I really appreciate Jennifer's genius in writing his character where I can totally see the appeal, but then again, I don't want anything to do with him, then the next minute I wish I were the one kissing him, and then I am totally questioning it again the next. And I don't want to spoil anything, but just let me say, sweet baby jesus--the lake scene. Yeah. That's all. Dee is pretty amazing too. She is the sort of female character that I wish were one of my best friends. She is perceptive, talkative, and understanding. As for pacing and that good stuff... I was never bored, and always wanting to know what would happen next, and yearning to be reading when life and other books that I had a short window of time to read got in the way of that that is Obsidian awesomeness.

OMG! I have no idea where to start. I don't want to sound fan girly and obsessed...but...Obsidian is amazing and I loved it! It's almost as if Jennifer Armentrout took my life, what I wish my life was, and sizzling hot aliens and baked it in a cake! Kat's book blogger nerdiness and ability to stand up for herself is the perfect combination for making an awesome heroine. Daemon...what can I say? I wish he was my next door neighbor. The chemistry between Daemon and Kat is so amazing. They sizzle on the page. In Kat's own words Daemon is a "Douchebag" and I loved it. They are mean, sarcastic, antagonizing, and completely wonderful together. I don't know how I am going to make it until the next book comes out. Let me assure you, I will be buying it the day it comes out. In case you didn't know I liked it a lot! Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout is amazing and one of my favorite/the best book I've read in a long time.

I wanted to read this one purely because of the rave reviews. I had a vague idea of what it was about but I'm not sure I ever read the actual description. And if I had I might not have read the book. The reason: infuriating hot guy who is so not nice. That right there tells me this will be a constant back and forth of 'I love him/her, I hate him/her'. And it was. But guess what?! I didn't hate it! I was shocked. Like seriously, that is one thing I normally hate. But it was pulled off in this one. Not that I loved that aspect of it, but it worked.I'm sure many of you (most of you) are aware that Katy is a book blogger. She loves books and she loves to blog about them. It's not an important aspect of the story but it's neat to hear when she's writing up an In My Mailbox or has to get her Waiting on Wednesday post done. It's kind of like Jennifer's little shout out to us bloggers or something. Plus it gives us another level to connect with Katy. And I did like Katy. She rarely made me angry and frustrated and she likes books! Okay, so she's loyal, brave and totally a great person as well ;)Now Daemon... well, I guess I'll use the same saying that many others have and it's getting kind of old but really-- Holy Hotness! He is one droolworthy dude! I know that half (or more) is the mannerisms as well that make him oh-so-yummy, but he won me over! Oh, until he was a total jerkwad! But then he'd do something accidentally sweet and well... drooling may have commenced. I should have hated him. I really should have. But I just couldn't. Sorry. The story itself was fast paced, the other characters were perfect, whether we loved them or hated them they played their roles great. I love Dee, Daemons sister and Katy's best friend. Such an amazing person and perfect friend. I wish she was my next door neighbor... I thought the story itself wasn't terribly unique in many aspects, but she threw in aliens instead. But it was such an engrossing read that I guess I didn't care.So in conclusion- this isn't a book I should have liked. It had too many things I normally hate. But I loved it! So I guess give it a try even if you don't think it's your thing. You may be surprised!
