About this audiobook

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's got tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Excellent series! I didn't think I would like it in the beginning, but the main character gets much better as the book goes on.

Joy Ellis is a great writer! It was so difficult to put the book down because the suspense was riveting! The character development is so amazing that I really cared what happened to the main characters. I am ready for a lot more of her books!!!

I liked the development change of the character. The audiobook’s narrator spoke in various tones, some were better than others but the main character almost had a lisp which was very difficult to understand and made the detective sound less like an authority. The case had a few different elements going on and sometimes it only partially shifted view points which was confusing to follow compared to other detective series I’ve read.

We are introduced to DI Nikki Galena, a detective tough on the drug dealers in her area, and herself and her team. Resulting in no-one wanting to work with her until she has to accept DS Joseph Easter.
What starts off with gangs committing crimes wearing identical hideous masks, leads to the disappearance of two teenagers. Unfortunately the past is ready to catch up on Galena.
A good start to a new detective series, with a range of characters.

Crime on the Fens came highly recommended by a fellow friend and book blogger, so I thoroughly expected to enjoy it. What surprised me a bit was just how much I did. When the book opens, Nikki Galena is a world class witch (you know what I really mean), and even though she has good reason to whirl through town like the Tasmanian Devil of Warner Brothers fame, I wasn't going to be able to put up with her if she remained like that for the entire book. (I don't like to root for the bad guys to kill the hero after all.) However, there's good news: Galena knows she's got to straighten up and fly right, and she's intelligent enough to know she's got to change. I do like off-the-rails characters who are capable of showing some control.Although initially suspicious of each other (their reputations have preceded them), Galena and Easter work well together, and I enjoyed getting to know other members of the team, like Vonnie and Niall in their patrol car and Dave, whom most consider to be past his sell-by date. What's rather heartwarming to see is how the mood of the entire station brightens when Galena begins to reclaim her humanity. There's also a bonus for animal lovers reading the book: keep your eye on a spaniel named Swampy. He doesn't appear often, but his scenes are choice. This is a fast-paced read and has an excellent multi-layered mystery. Add this to the setting and the cast of characters, and I've just savored the first book in a series that I'm definitely going to keep reading. If you're a fan of British police procedurals, give Crime on the Fens a try.

I was looking forward to reading this as the series seems to be popular and has a strong lead woman detective.

I found numerous descriptions, events in the story to be less than believable. Some of it is too sentimental for me and turn out of events too too convenient.

The worst part at the beginning is the detective's conclusion that a supporting character and friend of the victim is probably the killer because the friend is "very weird" ?? The friend is a hobby astronomer, loves science and to watch the night sky. The friend is a serious enthusiast and even has a small observatory. YIKES ! This is evidence of "weirdness" ?? I almost stopped reading. But I decided to finish the book to see how this was resolved. At the end when the astronomer is conclusively shown to be innocent, the female detective concludes that she was in error about the young man but also concludes that the reason that she made the mistake is that the young man actually is a weirdo !

I shudder when I read things like this. We live in a world that seems for the most part to misunderstand science, demeans people of higher intelligence. No wonder the world is such a mess. A young man who is an amateur astronomer is probably very intelligent, extremely patient and has an inquisitive mind.

Even without this blunder, I don't there is much value in this series and won't read any more of them.

    Shame on the author.

These days it is very unusual for me to complete reading a book in one sitting, but I did!I was interested in the setting: the last novel I read was also set in the Fens, but the two settings could not be more different. This one is a police procedural with a Detective Inspector being given a "last chance". She likes to work alone, is driven by a need to rid the streets of drug pushers. Her newly assigned DS has also been given a last chance to prove himself. A new posting, and 4 weeks to prove they can hit it off. Needless to say they both have "history" and a few problems. One thing I do know is that this won't be the only title in this series that I will read.I like the two main characters and also their assistants who make up the rest of their supposedly dysfunctional team. Two cases get tackled in this novel: a rash of robberies and assaults being carried out by gangs wearing hideous masks, and a huge drug shipment coming into a nearby port in the Wash.

DI Nikki Galena has a reputation as a difficult officer, a loner on a mission and when a new Sergeant, Joseph Easter is assigned, who also has a bit of a reputation, everyone expects fireworks. However the duo are quickly involved in a missing person enquiry and an unusual spate of crime around horrific latex masks. Easter isn't all he seems and to Galena's surprise she establishes a rapport with him. Unusual and clever plot with some good characters.
