About this audiobook
Every expectant parent insists the same thing: they simply want a healthy baby. Charlotte and Sean O’Keefe wanted the same but instead, their lives are made up of sleepless nights, mounting bills, pity from other parents, and haunting what-ifs.
Yet, in other ways, their daughter Willow is a perfect child. Smart as a whip, beautiful, brave, and kind, Willow is Willow, in sickness and in health.
Everything changes, though, after a series of events forces Charlotte and Sean to confront the most serious what-ifs of all. What if Charlotte had known earlier of Willow’s illness? What if things could have been different? What if their beloved Willow had never been born? To do Willow justice, Charlotte must ask herself these questions and one more: what constitutes a valuable life?
“Well-written and conscientiously researched” (The Washington Post), Handle with Care is an unforgettable and emotionally riveting novel that explores the fragility of life and the lengths we go to protect it.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another wonderfully written story. The imagery in the story can be seen as you read the words!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What a heartbreaking story and ending. Left me speechless with tears. Overall a good read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lots of feeling and emotions stirred up in this story?
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5What I liked: The propulsive narrative captures the reader from the start. I liked the way the author explores the destructive impact of civil litigation on each character. It has the feel of a TV melodrama—in a good way. It is an absorbing yarn.
The structure of the book allows readers to get inside the head of each character. I think it worked most of the time, because this is a story about the splintering impact of one person’s actions on the family members and their external relationships.
What I disliked: Charlotte, the protagonist; I could not abide her lack of integrity, her lack of empathy, and I grew frustrated with her commitment to a dishonest and destructive idée fixe. I don’t understand why her husband seemed unable to hold fast to his principles, why he caved in to her narcissistic martyrdom. I also found it hard to believe that Piper, the friend Charlotte sues, wouldn’t defend herself more vigorously.
And I was disappointed in the utterly implausible jury verdict. It is hard to fathom how this would survive an appeal and I can’t imagine the insurer cutting such a cheque without mounting an appeal.
Finally, and I know this is a bit pointy-headed but, really, why do they post the desperately needed damages cheque to the fridge? This completely beggars belief, given their near-bankrupt status. It is as if all this sturm und drang was a stunt. It makes the parents seem faintly ridiculous, as if the heartbreak and ruin the award represents is on par with the collage of candid snapshots and shopping lists and post-it note reminders magnetically tacked on countless household fridges across North America. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really great story, interesting characters but it all seemed worth nothing once the ending came along. Meh. Loved it otherwise.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Everything about this was awful. Gimmicky, contrived, pointless. Terrible characters.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I LOVED this book right up until the very last chapter. I was so disappointed in the ending and felt like it didn't match the rest of the story.
Regardless, I'm not sad I listened to it and I love the way Picoult develops every character so deeply. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Beautifully sad. Another wonderful edition to a near perfect collection of books.
