About this audiobook

Two neighbors-strangers-with one thing in common: they share a fence. But is that the only thing they share?

Nathan Fraser lives a solitary life, never letting anyone get too close. It's safer that way. Kourtney Whyte hides from the world and behind her work, too afraid to really live her life to the fullest. Rejection is what she knows best. But one night, the sound of her soft voice and the tantalizing aroma of her evening meal prove too enticing for Nathan to ignore.

So begins their unconventional relationship-talking, learning, texting, and gradually opening up to one another, all over the fence. That is, until the day Nathan braves the high fence to protect Kourtney from her past, and changes everything forever.

Can they move forward together, without the buffer of the fence? Or will their pasts prove to be too much of a barrier?

Contains mature themes.

Melanie Moreland

New York Times/USA Today/Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of thirty-plus years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.  While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys traveling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.  Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She's learned happily ever afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.

DNF 60%. So many things about the guy that's giving me red flags vibes. It started off well enough. Unusual sole male first person narration. Cute concept of tentative friendship over a backyard fence between ex-con IT whiz Nathan and his shy new neighbour, whose tantalising home-cooked meals soon feed both of them on a regular basis. I don't quite understand what kind of fence would allow you to place items on it, but okay, I'm willing to go with the concept. What started off as plates passed over the fence eventually develops into sharing of laughter, wine and thoughts - all without meeting face to face. So far, nice and pleasant, right? Until Nathan turns all stalkerish and creepy and then extremely possessive, complete with violent thoughts towards any male, imaginary or otherwise, who might dare to venture within sighting distance of Kourtney.

Kourtney hides an abusive past which explains her reticence and timidity. When her past starts to interrupt and threaten her present peaceful existence, Nathan decides to to hell with the fence and jumps over to her side to the rescue.

This is where more troubling behavioural patterns emerged and where I had to abandon the book. I'm all for heroic alpha heroes. He however took it too far, declaring ownership of her and never stopped to ask what she wanted or considered what she was comfortable with. He hijacked her life in the guise of protecting her, practically moved himself into her house, strong armed her into agreeing to things she was not quite ready for and pushed for an emotional and physical relationship when she clearly was still highly vulnerable and in shock and in no state to make such a decision. He disrespected her privacy time and time again throughout the book, copying her computer files without her consent, inserting his name into her online chat contacts, spied on her daily during her morning runs (before he breached the fence), took it upon himself to contact security at her work and inform them of her personal matters, walked in on her knowingly while she was taking a bath and did not leave when she requested him to, even though she was obviously embarrassed and uncomfortable. Then there was his obsessional repeated attempts at contacting her phone while she was away, because she failed to report her whereabouts for a few hours, all the while seething with escalating fury at various fictitious romantic scenarios she might be involved in during this time. All this while they were still fence friends only. Run girl, run!

To me, this had all the hallmarks of an abusive relationship in the making, especially with him being so aggressive and dominant and she such a timid personality. It was very unbalanced and really quite disturbing. Even the lighter dialogues were not that amusing. Some quite cheesy moments.

I’ve read several books by Melanie Moreland recently, and they’ve all been great! Over the Fence was incredibly heartwarming…two people who have isolated themselves because of certain events in their past begin a friendship by talking “over the fence” between their homes. The storyline was incredibly engaging, with some steamy bits included. Moreland writes about difficulties experienced by her characters in such a way that I feel empathy, but I’m not overwhelmed emotionally…I don’t do well with overly angsty books, so I find this a real plus. Among all the charming and tender moments in this couple’s journey to their HEA, I found the epilogue to be the most fabulous! Melanie Moreland writes THE BEST EPILOGUES! Great narration really brought this story to life!

Note: At the time I listened to this audiobook (9/6/22), there were places where the book continued but there no sound. It was obvious when the sound resumed that pieces of the text had been missed. That said, I still enjoyed this book. I’ve reported the problem to Scribd, and if this occurs when you’re listening, I’d highly suggest you report it to Scribd Support (found under your Account tab). Readers deserve ALL of the author’s words!

"Some days, you had to be able to slam a door. Today was one of them"

We read to escape. Sometimes we don't want to escape too far. We want our characters relatable. We want their lives to be ours. Not some uber rich hot sexy guy chasing down the impossible model perfect girl. No, we want Chefgirl and Tomcat. I have now read this book two times in a row. Yep - in a row. I LOVED it that MUCH.

"A giggle, lilting and strangely delightful, came drifting over the fence from somewhere inside her house - odd sound in my world, yet I liked it."

Kourtney and Nathan go through a modern day "Dating Game". Each one only recognizing the other by the sound of their voices over a shared fence. Their romance starts as how we all wish - someone genuinely interested in the person and not the shell. A series of events creates an urgent face-to-face meeting with the painfully shy Kourtney and the wise cracking Nathan. Giving into this attraction, they spend more time together. Nathan working on bolstering Kourtney to recognize the amazing person she is. And Kourtney accepting Nathan for who he is. It's a beautiful, endearing story wrapped up in the perfect HEA for these character. And the Epilogue - Perfect!

This book came recommended- strongly - from a trusted friend. It sat on my eReader in a TBR state. I was searching for a book to gift that maybe no one had read. I decided to crack open the spine to see if this was the book and it was. The storyline may start off feeling slow. But Ms. Moreland wants the reader to be immersed in what Nathan hears, tastes, smells and sees. This is a definite recommend #MustRead from me!

This. Was. The. Goddamn. Sweetest. Book. I. Have. Ever. Read.

I really enjoyed reading this from the hero's first person point of view! And I love that we got a chapter from the heroine's point of view to get a glimpse of her perspective! I adored the slow and real development of their flirtation over the fence, sight unseen, and then all the angsty drama on both their parts. And I LOVE a hero who knows what he wants (the heroine) and helps soothe and heal her! So many of my favorite tropes while still managing to be unique and have great characters.

I could probably count the number of contemporary romances that I adore to this degree on one hand. Ms. Moreland set a new bar for the genre for me.

Completely random nerd thoughts: one, the Canadian prison system sounds way different from the U.S., where a basic name search online will tell you exactly where a person is incarcerated. Two, I feel the need to have a long conversation with Grant about professional boundaries. As a counselor, I totally and completely understand the urge to support your clients, but dude. It is waaaay inappropriate to co-sign a client's (THREE!) loans!
