      This was a fun book to read (listen to). I am at that stage of my life where reading about small towns, small not so complicated stories helps eases the burdens we live with at the moment. The story was a typical cozy, the mystery was uncomplicated and we just peeled back layers of Zachary's life as the story went on. But because this was so simple, it made me think about a lot of different things apart from the actual story and I appreciate the book for giving me some mind chow.

      I think the biggest learning for me from this book was that we tend to live our lives governed by our mistakes. And it's only at the end do we think that we could have lived life much better if only we had the courage. And I think that happens to even the best of us. We tend to make our mistakes much bigger than they are and not celebrate our wins at all. This makes it seem like we're living a military life, one where we don't enjoy or appreciate the little things. And it's only at the end do we sit up and think about our life.

      I'm definitely up for reading more books in the series and discovering more of Serenity.

      small-town, teaching, murder, family-dynamics, friendship, law-enforcementThe first mystery was to determine if it was murder, followed by whodunit. The second mystery involved some interesting guests to the Lodge and the apparent pretext bringing them there. Add in a very busy life, mourning a good friend, and family madness and there you have it.The narrator had an interesting presentation.

      This was a fun, light-hearted mystery that can easily be read in a day or two. Tj Jensen is a single parent to her two younger sisters, and is very involved in her small town community. The fall festival is underway when Tj finds the body of her good friend and local curmudgeon, Zachary. Zachary could count his friends on one hand but enjoyed spending time with Tj, telling her about his past and teaching her how to solve complex puzzles. She will rely on that knowledge to find out who killed Zachary while she juggles the fall festival, getting her sisters ready for Halloween, and her job. Very likeable characters and and I enjoyed the addition of the puzzles to the mystery.

      When I saw this book on Netgalley I didn't immediately request it but took some time to decide whether or not to read it. Ultimately I decided to read it because I thought it would be another cozy mystery series that I would enjoy. While I did enjoy this book overall I don't know whether I will be continuing on with this series.TJ seemed to be a pretty weak main character. I didn't love her nor did I hate her. She opened up about her past (especially with her mother) but I don't think that was enough to get me to connect with her. There were times when I felt she was pretty slow with her investigation into Zachary's murder. I mean there were some things that you could see coming from a mile and she still remained clueless about them through most of the book.I wasn't satisifed at all with who the murderer turned out to be. We never really get an explanation as to why they killed Zachary. I did enjoy how the characters came together at the end though.Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

      If you have not read a book from this author, you are really missing out on great stories that captivate an audience with words that dance across the pages with adventure. I love how the author develops her characters so well and gives them personalities we can all relate to. Her descriptions of the area that the story takes place in makes you feel very welcoming.This book is the first in an exciting series where we meet Tj Jensen. Tj is a very responsible and caring person. She has a big heart for children which makes her job as a high school PE coach perfect for her. The town is so quaint and is decorated for the fall. I could picture pumpkins gracing the storefronts and festive decorations that add to the excitement of fall. Because of an unexpected tragedy , Tj is now caring for her two half-sisters. They all live together with her father and grandfather in a resort they run. I love the relationship the family has and the author did a great job of showing how family comes together in a tragedy. Being back in her hometown, Tj will run into old friends and perhaps find a new person that will help her get out more. She seems to stay busy with work and family which leaves little time for herself. What happens when an old friend of Tj is found dead? Will she help with the investigation or get in the way? Tj's old friend had many secrets that will change lives and it was enduring to see how much compassion Tj had for him. I felt so sad knowing that this person was almost forgotten about in the town and had little friends or family to visit him. I loved the way the story flowed so easily and gave readers many twists that keeps you glued to the book. I loved reading how the suspect gets narrowed down by brilliant writing and intriguing facts. I was very surprised by who it was and the ending is a great suspenseful whodunit. Don't miss this great introduction to the Tj Jensen Mystery Series. It is a good cozy mystery that has intrigue, secrets, and a town full of interesting characters. It's time to get comfy and read a book that you will not be able to put down. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I received a copy of this book from Great Escapes Book Tours for an honest review.

      Kathi has done it again! She switched up her formula some from her Zoe series and created another series I can't wait to read and catch up on. Tj ( a coincidence I'm sure, as those are my initials, and I have only known her a relatively short time. Then there is the fact that Daley is my mother's maiden name, but of course, another coincidence.) I just love the petite, kick-ass lady, who had the willingness and the gumption to take her two grade school age half-sisters when she was needed. Then used herself as bait so the hunky Deputy Caine could get his bad guy. A fun, fast read, typical of Kathi's books, I'd read them all in one sitting, but then none of my other reading would get done.

      If you are as much of a Halloween addict as I am, if you enjoy reading about small towns and the true charcters who live there, you want to grab Pumpkins in Paradise and find a corner to curl up in. As you read you will find yourself in the middle of the action.TJ Jensen lives with her Father and Grandfather at a resort owned by the family. Her mother recently died and TJ inherited two young step sisters. Luckily TJ has a best friend with daughters around the same age to help smooth the transition.TJ is a Halloween nut, and what is better than to enjoy a favorite holiday with children? It makes it easier to act like a child yourself.Halloween is also the anniversary of a special friendship for TJ. An unlikely friendship that lasted for many years, until one day shortly before Halloween, she went to visit and found her good friend dead. While the police wanted to close the case quickly, their finding of "suicide" did not sit well with TJ. So she adds to her already full schedule the task of finding out the truth.I enjoyed the setting and the characters and solving puzzles which occur throughout the book. There is not just the ONE mystery to be solved.This is a gentle, friendly read but it also has tense moments.I found it suitable for readers of all ages.

      Overall, I liked this mystery but it had a few flaws, some more serious than others. Most annoying for me was the fact that the author doesn't seem to actually know what life as a teacher is like. The main character, Tj, was supposed to be a high school P.E. teacher & coach to the girls' soccer team but she never seemed to actually have any work except a few committee meetings or watching the soccer team while chatting with people. What kind of school system does she work in, where she has an office to herself, hour-long lunch breaks, and can leave the school whenever she wants to run errands without even telling anyone? She is put in charge of the school's chorus which seems to have met once and then disbanded. I also found it "unfair" that after following every little detail of Tj's life, no matter how trivial, at the end of Chap. 20 Dan tells Tj he has something important to tell her but we the readers are not allowed to hear it. As I had already figured out who the killer was at this point, this was irritating but not critical.Less serious is the frequency of the use of "cozy" as an adjective and the unneccessarily long last chapter after the mystery has been solved.

      The town seems like a nice place to live. The characters are loveable and seem like people you want to know. There are just too many of them! I needed to make a list to keep track of them. The solving of the mystery seemed like an anti-climax--it just was not well put together, and when the killer was revealed, I had to ask, "Who is that again? And what is the motive?" And the minute descriptions of getting out of the tub while thinking things through seemed disruptive to the flow of the plot. The typos and grammatical errors drove me nuts. I will read the next book in the series, but I hope the edits are better.
