About this audiobook
Losing the trial of his life could mean losing everything.
When a young reporter is found dead and a prominent Philadelphia businessman is accused of her murder, Mick McFarland finds himself involved in the case of his life. The defendant, David Hanson, was Mick’s close friend in law school, and the victim, a TV news reporter, had reached out to Mick for legal help only hours before her death.
Mick’s played both sides of Philadelphia’s courtrooms. As a top-shelf defense attorney and former prosecutor, he knows all the tricks of the trade. And he’ll need every one of them to win.
But as the trial progresses, he’s disturbed by developments that confirm his deepest fears. This trial, one that already hits too close to home, may jeopardize his firm, his family—everything. Now Mick’s only way out is to mastermind the most brilliant defense he’s ever spun, one that will cross every legal and moral boundary.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A gripping court room drama full of twists and turns.
This story I felt brings you into the court and you feel all the trickery and emotion involved. You won’t want to put it down. The audio book is we’ll narrated and very clear, I feel it bring the story to life. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Subtlety. It may have been partly the way the actor read the audiobook, but the narrative voice mostly vacillates between outrage and self pity. It feels repetitive because the emotional tone was so unvarying.
None of the main characters in this book has an ethical centre. They’re compromised, grasping narcissists... more alike than not. Their differences are flattened; the males feel like variations on a sociopathic theme and the female characters are mostly stunning enablers of their husbands, rather thinly drawn products of the male gaze.
Yes, there is a character arc of sorts in this book. But it doesn’t feel as if the hero is deeply thoughtful enough to fully engage, to own his transformation.
The plot was also a problem for me. Like an establishing shot in a movie, the opening case is structured to get us to believe in the essential goodness of the protagonist. But that thread is never carried through, except in passing, two thirds of the way through the book.
Instead, we get a series of evermore improbable events. The main story is all about hatred. Not appealing.
In fairness, I understand that this is the writer’s first novel, and he deserves a tremendous amount of credit for putting himself out there. That takes courage and commitment. Maybe a master class with Michael Connelly will help him refine his work. (Smiling) - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not bad at all. Starts out and does continue with some horrible clichés, but the story is pretty good.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Was a great read right up until the conclusion, which seemed like a cheat. Otherwise a competent legal thriller.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A reporter is murdered. A rich business man is charged, caught cleaning up the incriminating scene. He claims innocence. Enter his school friend and lawyer. The one with a troubled brother, a marriage in trouble and a cute kid. Throw in some blackmail, high society kerfuffles, affairs and a sibling rivalry for a pretty good mix. I pieced together most of the ending, but not all of it! A good read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A fairly quick read. Very descriptive courtroom legal arguments and peeks at trial strategy. Has a few plot twists with one, in particular, a doozie. Unlikable core characters, morally ambiguous situations. Recommended for legal/courtroom thriller buffs.
