About this audiobook
A #1 New York Times bestseller about a man who wakes up from a five-year coma able to see people’s futures and the terrible fate awaiting mankind—a “compulsive page-turner” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).
Johnny Smith awakens from a five-year coma after his car accident and discovers that he can see people’s futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiancée married another man during his coma and people clamor for him to solve their problems.
When Johnny has a disturbing vision after he shakes the hand of an ambitious and amoral politician, he must decide if he should take drastic action to change the future. With “powerful tension that holds the reader to the story like a pin to a magnet” (The Houston Post), The Dead Zone is a “faultlessly paced…continuously engrossing” (Los Angeles Times) novel of second sight.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5book was ok, but james franco put out the worst “professional” narration i ever heard. he was mumbling half the time and whispering the rest of the time, he sounds like he was on heavy painkillers the whole time
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this when I was a teenager. I just finished listening to it again. Oh,I loved it and James Franco reading, perfect!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story and wonderful narration! I was hooked from the start.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was one of my favorite Stephen King books. The character of Johnny Smith is complex and interesting. His relationships to the other characters creates a tender dynamic in contrast with the intense situations he encounters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Riveting from start to finish. Stephen King at his best prose. The characters are endearing, real and unahakingly themselves. Lovely ending. Would re-rear, recommend as a must-read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I’d have given 4.5 stars if I could’ve! And maybe all 5 is more accurate…I’m spoiled by Steven King’s always-high quality and therefore score his work on a separate scale, I think. This captivated me throughout. I highly recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Good book. Back in the day I use to watch the TV series so if was nice to visit the original content for the show.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Melodrama, sci-fi thriller, and mystery all in one! I loved this so much!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great psychological thriller. Really picks up at the end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a book I've always been aware of, but never really thought much about until now. After the political turmoil we recently went through and seeing this book come back to the surface due to certain similarities, I had to see what it was about and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed the story and the narration. Highly recommend.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I normally detest James Franco, but he did a fantastic job with this. Definitely one of my favorite King books.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Slow and boring. Throughout the story I felt like I was waiting for it to get interesting and make sense but that never really happened.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love the story, plot and the narrator. Worth listening
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was an excellent read. I’m not sure if it was due to loosing two family members die from COVID two years ago or not but this book hit me hard. It will make you think about mortality, family, life choices, and what might have been. It shows how people keep moving forward as best they can despite life not always going as hoped or planned. You will not feel good reading this book or what is happening to the characters in this book but it might help you to deal with things that have or are happening in your life right now. This by far has been my favorite King book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Oh man this book is good. It's hilarious to see that republicans haven't changed in 45 years.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/53.5-3.75⭐ Not the best Stephen King book, but, oh well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing an interesting story! Everything from love to the supernatural. Somehow Steven King made the supernatural so believable one couldn’t believe it doesn’t exist. As usual his writing is superb. James Franco didn’t excellent job Narrating. Who knew he was as Talented as he is handsome. What a story?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I think this is my new favorite Stephen King. Well read by Franco. King's threading of the characters with a touch of mystery and only a little violence made for an amazing audiobook. I hung onto every word.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Overall a great read. Not King's best, but not his worst by a long shot.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The narrator was great! The story is entertaining and offbeat enough to keep you guessing. The ending was perfect, though I was sorry to get to the end.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Not quite what I was expecting. I couldn’t tell you the plot if it would save my life
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book with really excellent narration by Franco, who does a fantastic job of the different voice characterizations. Highly recommended to Constant Readers and novices.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A good suspenseful read. Had me hooked from the beginning. I enjoyed the narrating by James Franco as well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book had me emotional at the end. It's definitely pretty different from a lot of his books, but at the same time feels classic King. This is a long story about a nice guy named Johnny, and it goes in about 100 different directions to all meet back up at the end. It's a great read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good. This is my favorite style of Steven King.....
Not all blessings are good. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Not what I expected in the end, but amazing nonetheless.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5James Franco did such a fantastic job reading this book. His voice captured each of the characters’ personalities and drew me in. So fun!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I liked that this story didn't take place in a time vacuum and the characters lives were related to what was going on in the world at the time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Better than the movie and The Dead Zone is one of my favorite King movies. Great read
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I've read a lot of Stephen King recently and this was my least favorite. Mostly boring and long winded. Too many pointless sections that seemed to drag on forever. When there were good parts that had me engaged they were over too quickly and never revisited. Not sure why this book kept popping up on "Best of Stephen King" lists. Very disappointing.
