- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5First off, the so called "ethical scandal" the author was involved in (he purchased the service of an escort), bears no influence on my rating of this book, nor do I believe that such an affair itself would undermine someone's capability of instructing people on the practice of meditation
Still, I found this book to be too extensive for its own good. Less than 200 pages would have sufficed for the author to adequately present his model of meditation to a layman audience. As is often the case with the genre of self-help and meditation books, one gets the impression Yates bulked up his work with useless esoteric fluff in order to give it an air of thoroughness. For anyone interested in an approach to meditation that is detatched from faux-spirituality, look into Autogenics as laid out by J.H. Schultz, Wolfgang Luthe, Luis de Rivera or Micah Sadigh. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book provides a step-by-step guide to achieving samadhi (or "shamatha") in the context of the Theravada Buddhist tradition. It combines traditional Buddhist teachings with contemporary scientific research on the mind and brain, and offers a comprehensive and systematic approach to meditation practice.
"The Mind Illuminated" provides detailed instructions on how to develop concentration and overcome obstacles in the practice, as well as guidance on how to deepen one's understanding of the nature of the mind and the nature of reality. It also includes practical advice on how to integrate meditation practice into daily life.
Overall, "The Mind Illuminated" is a comprehensive and accessible guide to achieving samadhi in Buddhist meditation. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators, and provides a solid foundation for further exploration of Buddhist meditation and philosophy.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Long, a slog at times, but there's some interesting insights. The first meditation book I've seen that's (somewhat) grounded in science, cognitive and neuro.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I decided to listen to each chapter week by week incorporating the various practices. It was about building the habits and practices in my daily/weekly rhythm and I think that was a better and more insightful approach to the book. It’s definitely worth the hours

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Groundbreaking stuff. Culadasa is a meditation master who describes step-by-step the journey to becoming truly awakened. I have currently plateaued at (what he calls) stage five, but I'll revisit this book once I start making progress again.
