About this audiobook

Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman was not meant to be idle, which is why she’s back at a murder scene even while reeling from recent chemotherapy treatments. Having undergone a double mastectomy, all she wants to do is dive back into her medical examiner job. It’s a gruesome world, yet Schwartzman takes comfort in its science and precision.

But the crime she’s dealing with brings her right back to the cancer ward: the victim is her own oncologist, dead from ingesting the very chemical used to fight her disease. Now, Schwartzman and homicide inspector Hal Harris must figure out why and stop the culprit before he can act again.

For Schwartzman, the case becomes even more personal. Her abusive ex, Spencer, who’s in prison and seemingly out of the picture, is never far from Annabelle’s mind. But to solve the mystery behind the death of the doctor who saved her life, she’s got to put aside everything else.

After suffering through a double mastectomy, Dr. Anna Schwartzman is back doing her job as the M.E. for the SFPD. Even though she still has to deal with several bouts of chemotherapy, she feels better knowing her creepy husband, Spencer McDonald, is finally locked up in prison, where he belongs. But if he is, why is Anna's oncologist, Dr. Fraser, being investigated for murder by Inspector Hal Harris, her friend and sometimes partner. Then there's the creepy guy stalking her in her lab. Determined to move on with her life, Dr. Schwartzman tries not to lose control of her newfound freedom and peace until devastating news makes it impossible not to imagine the worst. This second book in the series moves slightly slower than the first but has enough surprises to keep you turning pages. The end is an excellent setup for the next book, which I can't wait to read.

This is such a well-written book. Throughout, you are given enough detail to really feel that you are not only a part of the story, but that you can actually feel what the characters are experiencing, yet, the author found a way to maintain a sense of unknown, insecurity about what was happening behind the scenes. It created a deep sense of connection and apprehension, as the closer I got to Schwartzmann, the more I feared for her life and those round her. Girard did an excellent job to really create characters with depth and enough personality to pull me in to the story. I felt there was a great balance between those I loved, those I wanted to get to know and those I hated/didn’t trust. It left me with a sense of the real world, which made the story all the more real. The author brilliantly made the story one that filled you with fear, apprehension and that feeling that something was just round the corner. I loved this, as it really kept me on my toes, and the connection between the coexisting stories, really kept you wondering just what was going to happen and who was behind all her fears. The ending. WOW! I am so caught in this story, and after a brilliant ending like this had, I seriously cannot wait to see what happens next. I need to know! Honestly, I loved this book and feel it is perfect for a lot of suspense, thriller lovers.
