About this audiobook

A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people’s secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it’s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that’s exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described “social information reporter,” or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she’d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone’s done the same to her, literally—with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn’t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she’ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn’t want to know…

When a woman who loves to dig into celebrities' lives is murdered, the suspect list is a long one. Larinda Mars has gone too far in making the famous pay, and Eve must distill the list of her victims to a final few names. Still, the killer strikes again before she can make an arrest. Fast-paced and intriguing. Recommended.

Dallas and Roarke are back solving another case together. A TV gossip reporter is killed in Roarke’s bar the Vin Du. Eve Dallas was meeting with Dr. Scarlet Garnett the NYPSD’s new forensic anthropologist when Larinda Mars reenters the bar from the downstairs bathroom lurching into a waiter as she is bleeding. Eve turns on her recorder as she jumps to catch the Channel 75 reporter as she falls to the floor. Dr. Garnett and a Dr. Sterling try to stop the bleeding but fail, the brachial artery was cut open and with each beat of the heart the blood rushed from her body. The doctors told Eve she only had 4-12 minutes to get help before she died. She died at the bottom of the stairs to the bar her brain just hadn’t known it yet.Peabody, McNab, Feeney, the Commissioner and the bull pen appear in the story but more as peripheral players.I love this series as it is well written with full bodied characters, a family of characters, that continue to satisfy.Eve has a characteristic that Robb continues to highlight in this story, taking a saying or a fact, and muddling it to fit her logic. I love that little bit of “work” that defines her character.

Homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds herself in a unique position when the victim in her latest case, notorious gossip reporter Larinda Mars, bleeds out before her eyes. As the list of people who hated Mars grows, Eve and her team may just uncover one secret too many . . .

Unfortunately, this book just did not resonate for several reasons. First, the victim is a truly nasty piece of work who exploits the weaknesses of others and preys on their need to protect their loved ones. The fact that someone killed her is not at all surprising, and notwithstanding Eve's mission of obtaining justice even for the most despicable of people, Larinda Mars got what she deserved.

Second, the identity of the culprit is glaringly obvious from the moment they are introduced. It is difficult to garner much interest when the solution is so plain to see.

Finally, there are several unresolved threads with regard to Mars' victims, which prevents a true sense of closure for the case.

Despite these issues, there are one or two wonderful moments between Eve and Roarke as well as a revelation regarding an event from Summersets' past that make this a worthwhile read.

Secrets in Death is another winner by J.D. Robb. When Eve Dallas meets a colleague for drinks, she doesn't expect to have a murder take place while she is there. The victim is gossip journalist, Larinda Mars. As Eve investigates her murder, she finds that Larinda was doing more than reporting gossip; she was using blackmail as a way to satisfy her need for indulging in a high-end lifestyle. Eve also discovers that many of her friends, including her husband, Roarke, were targets for Larinda.
Even though the murderer was one of Eve's first few suspects, Robb still brought many suspects and clues to her mystery, making it interesting and fast-paced. As always, Robb also finds ways for something to come to light about Eve's relationship with Roarke.
Another good entry in the In Death series.

There is fun knowing you are going into a book and certain things will happen. You know that Eve and Roarke will have a few romantic evenings during the book and Eve will catch the bad guy. Eve is primary on the scene as she sees the victim die but doesn’t see the actual cut that bled out the gossip columnist in the bar. As the case progresses we find out that no one liked the dead woman and it comes out she has been blackmailing people and making a tidy amount of money for herself in the process. By the end you find out why the victim is the way she is and the reader is reminded that Eve will get justice for her no matter the type of person she is.

Eve Dallas is back again, and this time the murder victim almost literally drops at her feet. She's reluctantly having a drink with Garnet de Winter at a bar Roarke owns, a French-oriented bar called Du Vin. She's noticed that a well-known gossip columnist, Larinda Mars. She barely notices when Mars heads downstairs to the ladies' room, but everyone notices when she comes back up into the bar.

Mars' arm is soaked in blood, and she is staggering and seemingly barely aware. It's not long before Dallas, Roarke, and Peabody are tracking down her killer, a search which gets ever more interesting when they discover she's been blackmailing the well-heeled.

Soon they find she was choosing her targets very carefully.

Also, that her background may not be the one her official records show.

I'm impressed that even 45 books in, J.D. Robb is still keeping the In Death series, fresh, interesting, and completely absorbing.

    Recommended.

I love the IN DEATH series. This one wan't crime action like usual... it was more quiet procedural, with focus on interpersonal dynamics. I imagine that as a homicide lieutenant DALLAS lands a lot of "normal" case... this just highlighted one of them. It was an interesting departure from the usual novels.

Fast moving and entertaining installment in the In Death series. I hadn't read one in a while and I've just read 3 in a row and found them all gripping. They stay fresh even though they use the same characters but the people continue to grow over time so that helps to keep me interested. The mystery does not depend for a solution on the killer explaining it all at the end but on police work by the chief characters.

I have devoured each and every one of the books in this series. I can't begin to say enough glowing things about them. Anyone that likes a little romance, a lot of good police work, wonderful well drawn characters that you will grow to love very quickly...will want to begin this series immediately. With 45 books out in the series it should keep you busy for years or in some cases mere months:)

There is something especially satisfying when Eve investigates and solves the homicide of a despicable person. Here, a gossip reporter né blackmailer is murdered practically in front of Eve while she's meeting DeWinter for drinks at a club. Bad luck for the killer. As she works her way through the blackmail victims, sympathizing with each, she is relentless in discovering the truth. At this point in the series, I enjoy the character relationships as much as the mysteries. I wouldn't be surprised to see Peabody & McNab tying the knot in one of the next few books, which would be epic.Overall, another great read from Robb and one fans of the series will surely love.

I really enjoyed this book! I have read all of this series (this is the 45th one) – and this book reminds me why I have stuck to it. Several of the books had gotten really “dark” – gory, lots of coarse language – just not very happy reading. I am so glad to see that the author is getting back to what attracted me to the series in the first place – good mysteries with great characters – and a little light-heartedness and romance thrown in. All of the characters we love from earlier in the series make an appearance – Mavis and Trina to just name a couple. Many of the characters we have come to love – and look forward to reading about - have been missing from some of the last novels. I’m glad to say they are back in this novel. Roark has a large role in this book – and that doesn’t hurt anything, either! I am not sure if I would have enjoyed it as much if I wasn’t familiar with the characters and the setting – so, I would not recommend it as the first one someone should read of this series. Treat yourself – start with No.1!I read these books to be entertained – to see what is happening in the lives of some of my favorite characters. I do not read them for heavy, serious mysteries. I was very glad to see this one was, once again, character driven. I hope the next ones, are, too!

When Channel 75’s social information reporter Larinda Mars is murdered, NYPSD homicide detective Eve Dallas finds herself standing for a woman she didn’t like. But she likes murder even less. She soon discovers that the professional gossip had a lucrative sideline . . . blackmail . . . and she must delve into the dirty little secrets the woman held over her victims’ heads if she hopes to find the murderer. This is the forty-fifth IN DEATH book, yet there are still surprises, still new insights into the characters readers have come to know and love. Most of the gang makes an appearance at some point in the story and, although Eve isn’t pushing herself past exhaustion as she diligently works the case, she’s determined to find justice for the much-despised Mars. Readers will find themselves immediately pulled into the story where they will find a twisting plot and some unexpected revelations. Fans of the series will appreciate the intrigue, the mystery, and rapport between characters. There is much to admire in this narrative; readers will be hard-pressed to set “Secrets” aside before turning the final page. Highly recommended.

The book begins with Eve meeting Dr. Garnet DeWinter for a drink. She's irritated because something about DeWinter rubs her the wrong way but she is connected with a number of people who are in Eve's tight social circle. There is lots of nice snark about her reluctance to meet. Next thing you know is that "social information reporter" Larinda Mars comes up from the restroom and dies in Eve's arms. Eve knew her peripherally and disliked her. Someone has sliced her brachial artery causing her to bleed out.Now Eve has to find out who killed a person that she really disliked. Just a little investigation shows that Mars was a blackmailer and her pool of victims is huge. Lots of people were willing to pay to keep their secrets hidden. As the investigation continues, it is Mars' victims who garner sympathy from Eve. Some of their secrets bring back memories of Eve's own childhood abuse and show that she is coming to terms with her own troubled past. Eve becomes even more angry at Larinda Mars when she learns that she, Roarke, Mavis, Leonardo and their infant Bella, along with Nadine Furst have also been targets in Mars' blackmail scheme. And Mars had secrets of her own that she jealously guarded. The autopsy reveals that she had extensive face and body work which sends Eve, with the assistance of forensic anthropologist Dr. Garnet DeWinter, on a quest to find out who she was before she reinvented herself as Larinda Mars. And, while her home has some records and some of her loot, Eve and Roarke are trying to find the rest of her records to know the full scope of people that Mars had blackmailed or investigated. This was another excellent entry into one of my favorite series. Book 45 shows that Eve and Roarke have not worn out their welcome with me and leaves me eager for their next mystery.
