About this audiobook

An all-new, never-before-published original short novel by the bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, about a hapless American tourist's larger-than-life comical trip to Ireland. Shortlisted for the 2015 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for comic fiction Cornelius P. "Fatty" O'Leary and his wife, Betty, plan a vacation in Ireland for his fortieth birthday, where they will tour his ancestral homeland and relax in the countryside. Almost immediately, things go terribly wrong: the seats in economy class on the plane are too small; the country hotel's dinner spread and bathroom fixtures leave much to be desired; and the down-to-earth O'Learys find their fellow guests are more than a little snobbish. In this amusing and touching portrayal of a kindly, misunderstood soul, McCall Smith has created yet another memorable character who will become an instant favorite to his many fans.

Like many generously built people Fatty O'Leary is a most forgiving man. He has very few malicious bones in his body and he quickly forgets indignities once they have been surmounted, most of the time. His trip of a lifetime quickly turns into a nightmare, and indeed progresses from one nightmare to another, all caused mainly by his generous proportions, but Fatty, an antiques dealer from Arkansas, soars above it all. His wife Betty deserves a medal. This was a lovely entertaining read, not, I should point out, crime fiction.Steven Crossley does a wonderful job of the narration.

Absolutely awful. I am used to the excellent writing found in The #1 Ladies Detective Agency and the Elizabeth Dalhousie novels. What happened for this author to produce this piece of nothingness? I found it insulting for the main character to constantly be reminded of his weight, and encountering one mishap after another. I thought the characters were cruel and heartless. I am not sure what the point of this book might be. Deleted it from my Kindle.

I have never read the author before, so I thought I would grab this short from NetGalley. From the time they get to the airport, to leave for a long awaits trip to Ireland, things begin to go wrong. Most of what happens is due to Fatty's size. Have to admit I found this vey amusing but then felt kind of bad for laughing at his misfortunes. Though I am sure the author meant the reader to laugh. Anyway all the predicaments they encounter, made for a fast and light read, which we all need now and then. The ending was very satisfying and a good message, sometimes we judge people on the basis of how they look and presume to think they would be happier if they looks better. We don't stop and think that some people are just happy within themselves, regardless of how they look.So a quick and amusing look at a trip gone seriously awry, with to very likable characters and many, many misunderstandings.
