A Dangerous Legacy by Elizabeth Camden is the first book in An Empire State Novel series. It is 1903 in New York City where Lucy Drake works as a telegraph operator for the Associated Press and she lives with her brother, Nick. The AP’s rival news agency Reuters (located in the same building) has a new man at the helm, Sir Colin Beckwith. Colin is attracted to Lucy, but he needs an heiress for a bride. Colin has a Whitefriars, a family estate, to maintain and it takes money (especially since it is falling down with disrepair). Lucy and Colin slowly develop a friendship. Lucy’s family has been in a heated forty-year legal battle with relatives, and Colin has the means to assist her family gain some valuable information. But, someone does not like Colin nosing around and will do what it takes to put an end to it. What have Colin and Lucy stumbled into? A Dangerous Legacy is well-written and has great characters. The author always creates such delightful, well-developed characters. The mystery captured my attention. I wish it had been slightly more challenging to solve. The book has a fast pace and an interesting premise. I had not read about news agencies prior to this novel and I found it fascinating. There is just the right amount of humor in the story. There are some definite laugh out loud moments. The book has romance, intrigue, suspense, humor, homing pigeons, Morse code, bad guys, and so much more. Ms. Camden did a wonderful job at capturing the era in A Dangerous Legacy. My favorite line in the book was “broken free of a dangerous legacy”. I give A Dangerous Legacy 5 out of 5 stars. This is one of those books that I started around 9 p.m. and I stayed up late to finish it. I could not put it down. I am eager to read the next book in An Empire State Novel series.

Saturday, December 9, 2017A Dangerous Legacy by Elizabeth Camden, © 2017My Review:New York City 1903Complications from generations back become forefront in the lives of Lucy Drake and her brother Nick. Competing with her Uncle Thomas and her cousin Tom Jr. becomes a full-time job, besides her actual decoding employment with the Associated Press. Will she and Nick be able to stay afloat, securing their rightful inheritance with Drake water valves? Seasoned and applicable knowledge handed down enables Nick to continue building the valves, but to what advantage when they are continually sucked into court to dispute their rights? As if that isn't enough, Lucy becomes enwrapped with the London correspondent at Reuters, the British equivalent of AP. Both news agencies are housed in the Manhattan Western Union Telegraph Building a few floors apart. One advantage ~ or possibly disadvantage ~ is that they both are fluent in the signals of the short and long 'dots' and 'dashes' of Morris code. A homing pigeon becomes an ally between them delivering top-secret messages beyond the wire services. Sir Colin Bethwith, whom she honors with the title "Mr." Bethwith, will be at an advantage to form a friendship with her. Both uncertain which news agency will come out on top, they are dedicated to their positions and arrive early ~ early enough that they join together in investigating slow ups and snags beyond their usual messages. The international news agencies may discover their top sources. This story will wrap you in as you are eager to discover the wiretaps and outcomes of good versus evil.***Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for sending a print copy. Title: A Dangerous LegacyAuthor: Elizabeth CamdenPages: 339Year: 2017Publisher: Bethany HouseMy rating is 3 out of 5 stars.Sir Colin Beckwith has come to the United States from Britain to improve Reuters subscriptions and hopefully marry a rich heiress to infuse his crumbling estates, Whitefriars, with much need cash to make repairs. He also supports 90 tenant workers on his estate. He knows he is marrying for money and not for love, but he is determined to carry on the family legacy and lands. He meets Lucy and soon wants her to be in his life permanently, but she has no money to provide as a dowry so they go their separate ways. That is until she learns of an assassination plot and reels him into the fray.Lucy Drake has fought her wealthy relatives all her life. A 40-year-old lawsuit has cost her just about everything. She works as a telegrapher for the AP, which is housed in the same building as their competitor, Reuters. To keep tabs on the case, her brother has installed a wire that allows her to eavesdrop on her relatives’ lawyer. The lawsuit stems from an invention of a water valve that revolutionizes water delivery. While eavesdropping she learns of an assassination plot. She takes her information to the police, but realizes they think she is just a distraught woman and don’t take her seriously. She tells Colin of her finding and he agrees to help her get definitive proof.I have read all of Elizabeth Camden’s books and have found her to be a wonderful writer with great historical details and settings for her tales. This story, however, I just couldn’t get into. I saw very little mention of God or faith to make this a Christian book. Lucy and Colin both are tied to their pasts and think that by doing something in the now it will change their futures. Colin never mentions God, so readers don’t know where he stands as far as his faith, and Lucy only mentions God once or twice. I kept waiting for more revelation of a spiritual awakening or realization that God is their source of joy, but that never came. I didn’t really like the relationship between Colin and Lucy. The ending of the story felt hurried and left me feeling unfulfilled. I will continue reading this author’s books because her past works have been very good. Occasionally, a book and a reader just don’t mesh and this was such a book for me.
